My mom tried to teach me how to knit, but you had to hold the needles and yarn a certain way or it was wrong. I couldn’t do it her way because she could play piano and I have short fingers. So I taught myself how to crochet and made a deal with my mom, and she would leave me alone and I would make all the cords for the mittens and the ties for the hats. Many years later, I went into a yarn shop with a coworker and saw a pattern for a sweater with an Icelandic yoke, so I bought a circular needle the pattern and yarn. I did not carry the yarn properly so I cut the yoke off and restarted. I still wear that sweater 30 years later. And acrylic because I am allergic to wool. My second project was a double knitted blanket that was marked advanced. I didn’t care. I still have that and more. I taught myself how to knit continental and I also know Portuguese knitting. I can read the stitches on the needle easily and, if it’s not lace or brioche, I will drop stitches to fix mistakes.

Sounds like you had the same "learn to knit" kit that I tried to use back in college (my friends all taught themselves & I wanted to try, this was long before KZitem). I recently found the booklet from it now that I've been knitting for a few years, and it really was an awful way to teach someone who knew nothing about knitting how to do it.

The crazy thing is I think they still sell it with the same booklet! 😂

My grandmother taught me to knit and purl when I was about ten. Everything since then has been self taught. Because of that, I didn’t know to be afraid until I took some classes and started talking to other knitters…Cables, provisional cast on, double knitting, magic loop all started to grow into monsters. I decided to stop assuming my experience would be scary, and just kept learning.

Great first episode! I had to pause this to go find your very first video. So glad you haven't removed it. It really is the first step in knitting!
