Yeah when people ask me about ferrets, I always say they are like the best combo of a cat and a dog. They've kinda got traits of both in behavior, and they are super smart as well. Have fun to anyone thinking of getting a ferret. It truly is a life changing thing, in a good way 🤗

Canadian here. I got my first ferret in 1986. Our first few ferrets were completely unaltered and had to do this. Much later, Marshall came into the mix and all ferrets were altered. We never needed to descent our females-the males were a little harder to argue. One thing I mention is that vet bills are very expensive as ferrets are still considered exotic-ensure the vet works with ferrets. That aside-they can be the best little buddies ever. People need to understand how STRONGLY a ferret bonds with you. Also, elderly ferrets are a true joy-they've mellowed out by then and just want to hang out with you. All the cuddles you tried to get will pay off when they are elderly. Your vids are excellent. Cheers from Ottawa.

Just know that they WILLL poop on your floor. People say you can train them not to but it's their nature. I have had them 10 years. Just be ready to clean up. They can use a tray but then you must live with stinky poop and pee. THAR STINKS! I just clean up after them and watch for them to start sniffing around and put them in their cage to poop. I place paper towel in their cage where they poop so I can just pick up the paperwork to clean the cage fast! They have their hammocks and under them I place large, soft towels or soft throws that are large and thick because ferrets love to hide inside of them and sleep! 😇😇😇 PS: Ferrets are burrowers so I keep large ONE LEVEL CAGES so my little ones do not fall anymore from the top of the cage to the bottom when sleep!

Got 4 ferrets 10 years ago. Over the last year and a half they've passed away one by one. We're down to our last and giving him lots of love all the time. All lived to be at least 10. Our last, name is Garchomp, is almost 11 and we've loved every second of it. It's like having kittens in the house all the time. For new Ferret Owners, I recommend Mazuri Ferret food. Another thing to mention related to the "cost" of a ferret. *Finding* a good _exotic pet_ vet... not just any vet will work with ferrets. So while there may be a few vets in your area, maybe only 1 works with exotics. Otherwise, *nothing* tops the _benefit_ of what these little bundles of _pure joy_ bring to your life. You will love them with all of your heart. Go with a shelter ferret if you can.. some of the stories about how they were found... "released by MotP" (Members of the Public).. and they have at least, if not more-so, need to find a good and loving home.
@iamsquatty

Agreed about the vet. The vet I use is about a 35 to 45 minute drive one way, but they are very knowledgeable and I have used them ever since I got my first ferret over 10 years ago. I used to live right down the street from them, about a 5 minute drive, but ended up having to move. And I still won't use anyone but them. So yes, make sure to find a vet who is knowledgeable about ferrets not just one who thinks they can treat them in the same way they would a cat or dog.

Ferrets are highly intelligent no doubt! My brother had 6 of them, and a total of 5 simultaneously at one point, in a nice big multilevel ferret cage with hammocks, a shelter, and tubes to travel through. They would be let out under supervision, and were definitely mischievous but also sweet. I ended up taking care of them when he went overseas, and unfortunately they all eventually had the typical issues like insulinoma and adrenal disease, but they had good lives. 5 to 8 years I think was the general range that they lived, except for one who passed early. Prednisone definitely helped to extend their later years. They do keep that playful puppy-like nature throughout their lives!

Everyone would ask "does it bite?" and I would honestly answer "of course they do" - it's how they communicate with each other. But it's natural that humans are terrified by ferrets' scary teeth. What is most amazing about ferrets to me is that they can team up to solve problems, like stealing my food or breaking out of their enclosure.

People mistaking ferrets as rodents is weird. I have never really thought about this until now, but I never thought them as rodents. I've been wanting to get a ferret for so long. I grew up with and have cats, so I'm quite used to mischievous, fiesty behavior. I already get high quality cat food that they recommend for my cats, and we have a dedicated pet room that I can put the cage in. (Obviously keep the cats and ferret separate) I also don't notice most smells, so I'm not worried about the musky scent. Being a cat owner I've grown so use to the pungent ammonia smell that can come from the litter box that Im no longer phased. Its just the matter of finding the right place to get one from and convincing my mother lol. I'm a disabled adult so I'm usually home and would be able to give it ample attention.

Been keeping ferrets since 2009, and as much as I love my dogs- if I could only choose one type of pet I was allowed to keep for the rest of my life it would be ferrets. Most of mine have been rescues or strays and come to me with a host of behavioural issues, but that only makes it even more satisfying when they come around. My last one I adopted, Beatrice, I was told was wild (found as a stray, had been at the rehoming centre over 400 days, no one would take her because of her issues) and would likely never be able to live with other ferrets - she's turned out to actually be the absolutely sweetest little girl and thrives on company, she's the sort of ferret who needs to be around other ferrets, she cannot handle being alone, which is likely what was causing her behavioural issues. All of mine - 4 girls and 1 boy - are unaltered (I'm in the UK) though one does have the implant due to adrenal.

Im in the uk and we still use ferrets for hunting rabbits and rats they’re kept outside. When I first got a ferret I was amazed at how intelligent they are. Very playful and bond well with you and are trainable to be called to you. They do bite a lot as kits I’ve only ever had 2 bad biting ferrets which were both given to me at 6 months old that I guess didn’t have enough human contact. I have a 1/4 wild polecat bred Gill she’s alot more bitey than the rest. When we keep males here they’re not neutered as most are bred from private breeders not stores. I think ferrets are great pets for children as they’re a lot more fun and active than a rabbit or gerbil ect.

Super intelligent , super fun, only nips playfully when really hungry, super affordable to feed and she wont smell so long as we change the pea pad every day and maintain her cat litter. All we had to buy was a 3 storey cage . She has the run of a ferret proof area and just sleeps in cage and poops in cage. Make sure your ferret cant escape your cage. We put him on a leash (which he didn’t like) to keep him safe and to take him on walks! Unfortunately, Woody only lived until he was 5 1/2 years old which was very disappointing for my family! He was a Wonderful pet and gave us a lot of Love during his short life! The doors to his cage remain open now, and the only time he spends in there is to eat and drink. I love watching videos about ferrets, but with a house full of rodents (guinea pigs and soon rabbits) I will continue to live vicariously through people like you who choose to share they're lovely family members with the world. Thank you again! I love your babies. ❤️

Thank you for the well thought out, educational, inspirational, and helpful video. I appreciate not only the information provided in the video but also the way that you shared the information. This was wonderful to watch and very well edited, in my opinion. I Love ❤️ 😍 how you had the question slides and then went on to answer each question concisely. I'd love to have a ferret and hopefully someday I will have the opportunity, but with your help I'm able to make an informed decision on whether it's time to add a Ferret to our menagerie. I will be watching more of your content so I can live vicariously through you, as well as to learn more about Ferret ownership. Thank you so much for all your hard work, and please know that I appreciate you!!! Hugs ❤🤗🫂❤

Dear Hailey, thank you for your great info about Ferrets - now we own a beautiful little 12 week old girl. At her first Vet Visit, we were asked, what we feed. We followed your ideas and were buying Wysong Epigen 90. Our Vet recommended Totally Ferret Complete- the reason behind was, that there is sugar in the Wysong product, which could cause insulinoma. What would be your advice on food? Right now we mix the Marshalls Premium food with the Wysong - I wonder to change it to all Totally Ferret Complete after the Wysong product is gone - or what would you advice? Thank you in advance.

Ferrets are little cuties. Our first ferrets came from a private breeder and lived to a happy 13 years old. But we can't get Marshall Farms ferrets to live more than 5 years. They mostly die of adrenal disease or insulinoma. The other difference is that the 13 year old ferrets were fed CAT FOOD (we were in California where ferrets are illegal) and the short lived ferrets were fed Marshall Farms ferret food. DON'T FORGET, "SUPRELORIN" implants help ferrets with adrenal disease.

To call ferrets thieves? Nah, with a good lawyer that is just "collecting lifestyle" and we need people like that for environmental tasks....... 😂

Work as a Kennel tech at a petstore in the local mall. Manager told me that she was woken up by night security just before Christmas because a ferret had gotten out of the petter, slipped through the gate (with holes big enough for a ferret) and was seen on camera wondering down the mall's walkway. We joked he was going Christmas shopping. They also had the ferret hide taken out and grates put over the top so they can't go shopping again. (Also I don't want hate for working at pet store- I love the animals and I try to provide for them the best I can.

My Ferrets, Speedy and Tricksy were a year apart and lived to 13 and 14 years. Speedy (the older of the two) passed and Tricksy went a few months later, I think from depression. I got them from a pet store. So life spans, really are just how well you care for them. Plus....I wouldn't keep ferrets and cats at the same time. Most illnesses (pet)ferrets can get are actually from house cats and especially from cats you let in and out of the house.

Like any animal , if you take it to a vet when it is not sick , it will still cost money . They do not need shots , for anything unless they are sick .

We have one small female ferret who stays exclusively inside the house. We were concerned that she is alone but she seems to be doing well this last year. We have cats and dogs that she plays with and our blue heeler is particularly fond of and protective of her. She has a good size cage where she can relax and she spends a good chunk of everyday outside of her cage exploring the house. My wife stays home so there is almost always someone there with her and she is bonded well to all of us. She is an onery little thief and we’re often having to hunt down our slippers, flip flops, pens, or basically anything with rubbery textures! She is also super sweet and hilarious when she gets the zombies, especially after the rare bath.

Great video. I have subscribed to your channel and I will watch more of your vids. One thing that need to be stressed is ferret-proofing. Ferrets can get into the smallest places which can lead to escapes, eating things they shouldn't, esp rubber, and disappearing for hours. They like dark places to sleep and you might tear your home apart looking for them. I've had 30 ferrets and lost the first 3 by escaping through a tiny hole in a screen. My favorite ate a foam earplug. He pooped out 90% of it, but getting the last piece out cost $1600 in ER vet visits and surgery and he didn't make it. Beware! Ferrets are awesome and addictive, but they ain't cheap or easy.

If you're considering getting a ferret, just understand that they are MORE work and responsibility than a cat or dog. It's basically like having a very intelligent kitten that never ages. They're expensive, smelly, messy, time consuming, and have a lot of health issues. Also it's better to have them in pairs, so plan for double of everything! Lastly; please consider rescuing instead of buying one. There are sooo many that need homes! You can pay less money for one that's already vaccinated, bite trained, and potty trained.

The answers to all of the questions at the beginning is yes. I love ferrets but would never own one. I saw a wild one kill a rabbit once. It was quite a thing to see, though you only ever need to see it once...

My kids had a ferret years ago. He was in a smaller type of cage, but was hardly ever in it. I think it was a boy, but not really sure...lol That ferret was a big time thief, forever stealing my crochet yarn and hooks, hair brushes and ties, and a few rings. We found them much later in a hole that he had chewed in the mattress. Rascal also potty trained himself, he found a corner that he liked and I put papers there for him. I did not like him at first, but grew to love him.

Hi! Could you show a video preparing your ferret carrier? Everytime I drop off my ferrets at the vet I always struggle for them bc I leave them there just with a towel and it turns out to be very messy. It would be great to see an example of litter box that fits a carrier, how to latch it so it won't slip and how to attach the hammock to the carrier :)

I grew up with ferrets and polecats,i used mine to control rabbits and rats in uk,the idea is ferrets entering holes of rodents cause them to evacute fast from nearest exit hole, even though unlikley to have encountered a ferret before they sense its bad news and bolt,we catch them in draw string purse nets rabbits, rats in sall mesh nets made from carrot sacks placed over holes,so you had to try to cover every hole, easier said than done, rabbits commonly have emergency exits, holes that are dug from inside their tunnels up tothe surface so no soil or digging shows unlike entrance holes which are larger .

I leash walk my ferret Lucky every single night for 6-8 blocks. Being nocturnal, I can't get them to walk in the day time. Ferrets love their leash walks. And having had 8 ferrets over 30 years, I've never owned a cage.

My ferrets share their darn food with wild mice. In Australia we use kg and grams, males weigh between 1.2 and 4kg while females weigh between 250grams and 1.2kg. Lifespan depends on genetics, our oldest was 2 months shy of 13 years. I’ve personally trained 6 ferrets as emotional support animals and service animals that do task.

I love ferrets! My mom said that if I clean my room and keep it clean for a little bit she will get me 2 ferrets but I’m still in school and don’t know if I’m ready for them. I can take care of my dog and cats but I’m just worried how long the ferrets can be without me while I’m at school. If I do get them I plan to free roam them just in my room while I’m at school. I also have a few questions: - Can I keep my ferrets in their cage while I’m sleeping, or should I let them free roam during the night? (I roll around a lot when sleeping and I don’t want to squish them.) - How long can ferrets stay in their cage before getting bored/angry? - Do ferrets get along with big dogs, because my dog is a German Shepard/Lab and might hurt them. (He wouldn’t hurt a fly, but he is big and doesn’t know his own strength) - Do you think it would be okay for the ferrets to only have access to my room and my bathroom, because I don’t think my mom and dad would be a fan of me trying to ferret proof our entire house.
