Just finishing a marathon even a half marathon even a 10k or or 5k is amazing with no stops. Mate i was 115kg 2 year ago at 184cm i couldnt even run 200meter, NO almost everyone in my life i know None of them run anything..if you finish even a 5k with 0 stop as a jogg you are already top 10 or 5% world mate. I started running every day 5k anf just getting it non stop was a huuuge achievement for me, now i am 84 kg and i can run 21km non stop in about 2 hour 20min and 10k in 58min and 5 k in 26:50...whay i didnt even think was humanly possible for me, i wasnt even dreaming about that. Jusy run for yourself and be happy and proud that you can even walk or run mate.

For your FIRST marathon anytime is a good time, it's about finishing. A "good" time is going to vary from person to person, varying on factors such as experience, age, gender, and even what marathon route it is. Any good runner would know this. Unless you are a professional runner ( i.e. it is your job to run and you have a coach) comparing yourself to elite athletes is pointless.

For a first marathon... finishing is the goal. If you finish without any walking then you can start thinking about the time. I ran my first at age 16 in 3:53. Later got it down to 3:25 in my early 20s (I was running 5k at 17-18min at that time). Unless you have some genetic gift for running I think sub 3hrs is being overly optimistic (maybe sub 3:30 for women).

You spend too much time comparing yourself to others if you think 3:45 to 4:15 is an okay time, running is 99% subjective and your time is partly based on factors you cannot change, for anyone watching people on youtube running a sub 4 hour marathon on their first attempt, just know that these people are very gifted and far from the norm. The optimal time is the one that you believe was the best you could give.

3:45 to 4:15 is ok? That's an amazing time. The largest marathon in my city had an average finish time of 5+ hours. Granted, the weather is hot and humid. But this is a ridiculous video and sets unrealistic expectations. Most marathons have an average finish time of around 4:30. There's very very few people who can run a BQ in your first marathon. Sub 4 is already very rare for a first marathon. Besides, if you're running a marathon for the first time, time should not be the goal

What’s a good approach for your first marathon? No goal? “Just finishing” wasn’t appealing to me because I knew I could do it. I wanted to push myself. But being new to running I didn’t know what a good time to aim at would be so I looked into it. How is this terrible?

@@JakeFerrin Im running my first marathon on April, i also have a goal because i need one (like you) and thats a great thing (even if its personal and a lot of people dont need it, just finishing is a big goal for a lot) What i meant is that telling that a certain time is "good" or "bad" doesnt make sense for obvious reasons... its personal. Some people might put more effort than you will in your entire life to achieve a chrono. I encourage them to keep training to reach it even if they saw a KZitem Shorts saying its "ok". You will always be bad for someone but the best for someone else.
@JakeFerrin

Nice, how did you decide on a goal time for your first marathon? I'm not sure how you would come up with a goal without looking at finish times by people in your category then choosing something that seems reasonable. I agree it's personal. A "good" marathon time for me is now based on my own time (last year I got a 3:28). So now I can compare myself to my own previous performance. But for a first time you need something to go off of to choose a goal. So these times I put in the video are what I found after doing some research for someone like me - male, under 40 and already fit.
@victormordant4241

@@JakeFerrin personnaly i did compare it to my other distance time ! (My case dont really count since im following a plan which give me my objective based on my perf) But i would have just not used these word "good" "ok" or at least just say its YOUR perspective a bit more. 2 fit males under 40 wont have the same aptitudes !! Genetics play a (unfair) role...
