A simple animation shows the footing of a Mat Type Jack Up barge or Mat supported Jack Up Rig
The types of Jack Up Barge depends on how they rest on the seabed. There are basically two types of JUB's
1. The independent legged Jack-ups with 3, 4 or even more legs
and
2. The Mat Type or Mat Supported Jack Up Rigs.
The Jack Up rigs with independent legs have truss type square or triangular legs or Cylindrically Legs with spud cans (shoes or footings) with cone pointed ends.
The spud cans are driven into the seabed until the soil has sufficient baring or resistance to give support and hold the rig in place.
The Mat Type or Mat Supported Jack Up barge has an A-shaped steel tank at the bottom of the legs connected. The connected legs now rest mostly on the top of the seabed, rather than penetrated into the seafloor this due to the much larger baring area as in comparison with the Independent legs JUB's.
The Mat Type or Mat Supported Jack Up barges are mostly used in softer seafloor areas, where deep penetration of the legs is unwanted.
