I love these watches. I got one for my 16y birthday when I was younger, lost it at school because in school you can't have nice things around some of your fellow classmates. I didn't know when my stepdad whom gave it to me that this watch would be going on as a heirloom if I kept it right, and it would never need a change in battery or any kind of energy. That's 26 years ago, now I own 1 and I totally forgot to see how it actually works, so today I sat on the can and I thought to myself as I looked at my watch, "how the heck does it work?". So thank you for this insight. Wish you the best and a wonderful day my good sir for showing me this.

Apparently the new kinetics have been changed. Instead of a capacitor they now have a li-ion battery that stores the power. I looked into it because I got a diver kinetic real cheap from a shop. Great watch built like a tank. Quartz accuracy, never needs a battery, 200m water resistance. What's not to like.

Good video and nicely explained, of how this technique works! I wouldn't say, that this system is really cheaper than watches with batteries. The battery prices are very low. Okay, when using brand batteries, than the 10 pounds capacitor might be cheaper within 10 or 15 years. The main advantage might be, that you do not have to change the battery every one or two years. That is very comfortable.

It IS a quartz watch. It's an electrically powered watch, regulated by circuitry containing a quartz crystal, which vibrates at a rate more constant than the gyrations of a mechanical balance wheel and escapement mechanism, enabling it to achieve a greater level of accuracy than the average mechanical watch. To state that it is not a quartz watch, just because its battery is recharged during wear, by means of a dynamo harvesting the kinetic movements of the wearer, is just wrong!

Interesting concept. So it's basically a tiny dynamo charging that capacitor instead of winding up the main spring. Still, this or Citizen's solar powered EcoDrive? Because if you didn't wear your kinetic watch for over a month its capacitor would be dead, whereas EcoDrive would last six months in full darkness on full charge, and would recharge very quickly under bright light. 🤔

Which in all reality aren't they powered by a battery since the initial capacitors seemed to be replaced by the lithium battery? I just changed one out of a SKA099. Certainly wasn't a fun process. If it wasn't a graduation gift from my mother then I'd probably have tossed it or sold it. I'd recommend saving the money and just going with a standard quartz since that is much easier to change out on your own. My Kinetic was always a bit noisy as well. It's okay for what it is, but I wouldn't personally buy a Kinetic if there wasn't something about the watch that just sold me on it. Nice video and explanation though!

You have to be vigilant about the capacitor. They can leak and ruin your watch. It's best to open your watch and check it out. I bought a battery and I didn't use it enough and it died. I can still charge it somewhat but I can't get it to fully charge. The capacitor needs changing if it leaks. And no one can say when it will leak. The batteries that they made years ago were made much better than the batteries they're making now. I think it's that way with everything. I wish it was true that these batteries lasted 10 years like my old one did. You can go on the internet and read where people have had problems with the life and the leakage problems. Some people will be lucky and the battery may not leak and may last for 15 years. I wish I was one of those people. If your battery does leak and you catch it in time you can clean up the leakage and save your watch. Maintenance is the key. There's not a perfect battery out there. As someone here say's these capacitors are just batteries that are rechargeable. And when you don't recharge them properly they get damaged.

Quartz is not nasty at all. Quartz regulated movements are cheaper to make, cheaper to maintain and more accurate than 99% of mechanical watches. Plus a lot of people don't care what regulates their watches. There are some nasty cheap quartz movements, but there are also some plain nasty mechanical movements. I will swap from Manual wind, automatic, quartz and electronic watches and like each one for a different reason. And for complex triple calendar watches quartz is the ideal solution.
