The Aurora borealis in the north and the Aurora australis in the south are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres.
The aurora is caused by the collision between charged particles from the sun (solar wind) and the Earth's atmosphere.
They release energy in the form of light, creating the beautiful, colourful displays that we see.
They commonly appear as curtains of light but also as arcs, spirals, and rays.
Green is the most common colour seen and is produced when solar particles collide with oxygen molecules.
Red appears when solar particles react with oxygen at higher altitudes.
Blue, purple, and pink are seen less frequently, and they tend to appear when solar activity is high and particles react with nitrogen at lower altitudes.
Locations in the north and in winter are generally good times to view the lights because of the longer periods of darkness.
Auroral activity varies with the solar cycle, which peaks approximately every 11 years.
Viewing the Aurora is a breathtaking experience that leaves a lasting impression on those who witness it.
It's no wonder why it's often included in many people's bucket lists.
As the most spectacular display of light in nature, I recommend everyone take the opportunity to witness it at least once in their lifetime.
