The Inductor is used to direct low frequencies and resist high frequencies.
It consists of a lacquered wire wound to a coil which causes a magnetic field to occur in the center. The field in the middle can be increased in strength by having a steel or a ferrous core. This is due to the fact that magnetism will be easier to propagate, but the drawback is that it is difficult to disappear too, so that a magnetic resisstance will arise when the poles are to be reversed and resistance will arise called hysteresis.
This storage of magnetism means that the larger the coil, the lower the frequencies are needed to magnetize and lead. Therefore, the larger a coil that gets connected in series, the lower the frequency at which it is connected.
You can consider the speaker coil as being in series, therefore its resistance (impedance) will have a big effect on the current running and hence the magnetic charge of the coil. Therefore, you can adjust half the size of a coil to achieve the same crossover frequency, if you connect 2 of the same speaker drivers in parallel on the same inductor.
The single-coil series method is the type of filter called first order filter or 6dB per octave filter. To give a sharper split, you can subsequently take a capacitor and calculate at the same crossover frequency and connect it after the coil to ground / minus and short circuit the high tones. This provides the most popular 2nd order filter or also called 12dB per octave filter.
