7:20 another way to think about it is 255 is 'full' and 0 is 'empty', you are specifying the amount of 'free space' in that 'slot' (octet). As we've specified 255 for the first 3 octets, there is no 'space' for that number to change as we've said that those 'slots' are full and it will be locked to those digits. Whereas for the final octet that we've specified as zero, we're saying that its 'empty' and the DHCP server can go ham and allocate what ever it likes in the 1-254 range. Obviously thats highly simplified and in reality its more nuanced than that, but it made it click in my head.

Also, if you have DHCP for a network, don’t use the entire range! 11-240 is a good rule of thumb for a /24, so you can always add devices with a fixed IP to the network later!

@kemalc.3782

But 254 is correct for a /24 ip range. The zero is also an ip address. You have 256 possible IPs (0-255). And you need to subtract the broadcast and the network address, thats 256 minus 2 equals 254. The router/gateway is only required, if you want to leave your ip address range, so it is not a must have. However, like any other device, you will need to address it with an IP if added.

@7:32 The short explanation - The network portion of an i.p. address is just like the name of the street you live on and the host portion is just like the assigned house-number to the home you live in. OR Your home network is street in a world full of roads and your neighbors are the devices connected to that network. Thus, your devices have the same address, just different “house numbers”, in order to distinguish themselves from one another.

This man is fun to watch. Even though i know any particular topic he is talking about, watching him gives you joy and teaches you something new and important on what you already know. Hats off bro💪💪💪💪

This video was so good that I watched the entire 2:45 minutes of ad (knowing I could skip them) just to show appreciation to the work put in to this.

Tbh I am following a Networking course as of right now. I do understand it in the class but only 40%. Thanks for the explanation, it's a quick recap and thus makes me further understand the modules. Thanks

I am new to subnetting and all this fancy stuff. I was reading online about it, trying to understand. However, I was not really grasping it. Watching your quick explanation of it saved me so much headache. I subscribed and plan on watching all of your videos 🙏

🔥🔥 Dude you are the best IT guru out there, I've done my CCNA in 2011, but no one has explained topics like you do, You dont just explain "How" but you also explain "Why", adding it with analogies, that's what a great teacher does. Explaining the WHY with ANALOGY. You will be remembered for generations🔥

I essentially knew nothing about IP addresses until 15 mins ago. This was explained so clearly and succinctly. I was able to understand and remember almost everything said. That's saying something for me.
