Good review, a lot of the positive points are very well expressed. The only problem I see is that you`re kind of missing the point about AA`s core mechanics. AA, in it`s heart, is a sandbox PVP game focused on open world guild PVP... or "real" guild wars. Players can form their own faction, claim land, build castles, turn into pirates, set up trading routes, etc. The questing and PVE instances are irrelevant, and that`s what the multitude of carebears criticizing the game don`t get. The labor system only becomes a problem if you plan on playing AA like it was farmville.

Why are the PVE instances and quests irrelevant? Leveling must be a pain in the butt without any good quests or dungeons.
@ElectroMonkeyz

Jered Jereds Not really, leveling in AA is the most fun leveling experience I`ve had in years. It's extremely possible to craft, farm, PvP, and explore your way up to level 50, although slower than doing quests. But you have the option of doing whatever you want. AA is more about getting a group together and doing trade runs, PVP, craft, build and explore... doing quests here and there at your leasure.

Archeage is literally like no other MMOs I've played. It finally has that something different from WoW and its many sub par clones. Wow nearly does everything in a theme park styled mmo perfectly, all the players are led from one activity to the next. In Archeage it's just get out there and play how you want to. I've literally done nothing but the main quest line and made all of my experience and money from farming and running what's called trade pack.

@DragonKnightX12

Thats not true, Archage is themepark MMO with Sandbox elements and the questing is as generic as it gets, the combat system is exactly like WoW, there are other games with large scale pvp complete with forts and sieges. Granted it has some things different like Naval stuff, but underwater was already done by Guild Wars. The whole criminal system is sorta new in the way it is handled though the way players are just caught without a chance of getting away with their crime at all is completely unfair and one of many flaws. ESO is better than Archeage and that saying something.

As someone who has taken part in the Alpha for this game since it was basically available to buy, I do have to admit I fell in love with this game very quickly. It had been over 10 years prior since I was lost in an MMO world, the last being WoW. There is something about this game that makes you feel like you are truely living out a "fantasy" life. I agree with this whole video and all of its flaws. It isn't perfect, but it is fun. Great video, keep up the good work!

No voice acting? There's a decent amount of English voice acting in the game, tho it's not complete yet. I've had several NPCs talk to me in English. Most notably in the scarecrow quest guy. The UI is also almost completely moveable. The only element that can't be moved in the minimap for some reason. Unfortunately, only the minimap and chat can be resized. Though the hot bars can be "rotated" to be horizontal or vertical. Also, the errors and mistakes and I'm guessing at least some of the cultural things will be ironed out as localization continues (which it is still a work in progress and mostly why we're still in beta). I agree with most other things you've said, though. Although I think saying that it has the worst questing system isn't quite right. I mean yeah, it's not a good one but I can think of a good number of games that have had worse, or the same, questing system. Most themepark MMOs, actually.

I just couldn't get into it. I didn't feel immersed at all and I was frankly confused 90% of the time. The first problem was... the vagueness. Though it was attempted, there wasn't really a SENSE of linear progression. I was left confused, as explanations at least FELT vague. I could buy crops, kill things, plant things on public land, but for what purpose? To craft, or to sell? There really wasn't a crafting demonstration (or at least I never reached one) so I was left with 3 Cucumbers and Potatoes not really knowing what to do with them. I was presented with crafting stations early on, but their general complexity left me waiting for some further explanation that wasn't really given. To top it off, I was given a blueprint to build a small farm (which finally gave me a sense of purpose) only to find that I apparently couldn't use it for lack of membership (or at least that was the explanation I was provided). I just sort of wandered around following quests until I felt too confused to continue. Secondly, I felt like there was a lot going on around me, but I didn't understand what boundaries I wasn't meant to cross or what was considered a crime. I was faced with "enemy" players relatively early, but I avoided interacting with them out of fear for doing something incorrectly. I went to Mirage Isle, or whatever that place is called, and I couldn't figure out it's general purpose. I bought a cat thinking it could be raised like a mount, but I needed milk for it since it was apparently a battle pet? There's apparently a tutorial for that later, but It felt distant and I was already confused as is. Thirdly, it was just the feel of the game. Villages felt like unreal, cluttered messes and my UI just felt trashy. There were nameplates everywhere, but when I turned off NPC nameplates I could no longer see new quests to pick up - effectively forcing me to keep them on. I would download an addon, but apparently such modifications aren't allowed? It took away from the beauty of the textures and the environment in general, which was very disappointing. I wanted to get into this game, but I just couldn't. Did I miss something vital? Was there something I missed that would've drastically changed my experience? I get that it's supposed to be a sandbox "freedom-of-choice" kind of thing, but It was just overwhelming right from the start. I felt like I had entered a gymnasium where 10 games where being played. I was given the choice of playing any of them, but I didn't even know the rules. P.S. This wouldn't have been a deciding factor anyway, but the pay-gates and the labor point system were big turn-offs.
@Fevir
10 жыл бұрын
Amaya Hinageshi It's overwhelming because even though it was just released here- the games been goingo on for years and has all the content to go with it. The quests that you're finding difficult without tutorials- ARE the tutorials. Like that battlepet- there is a cow right next to the quest giver and the quest text tells you to milk that dude... If you need rails the game is just a giant clusterfuck.. if you enjoy wandering and learning piece by piece.. the game is great

This video reconfirms why I subscribed to you. The eloquence with which you present topics is great. (you did so for both FFXIV and Wildstar) That being said, I would love it if you went a bit more indepth about various elements. (in the long run) For example for this game I would love to see a bit more about the housing, crafting systems, about the sea-content (ships and ship combat), castles and fortresses, what are they and how do they work, what about sieges and large-scale content, etc. Is PVE that .. lacking ? I remember playing one weekend and the story-driven main quest seemed quite nicely narrated if nothing else. I saw some world bosses and I understand there are some so called "dungeons", will they provide at least some pve content outside of the player-driven pvp-centric core-game ? In any case, great 1-50 impression. Thank you.

the game blows, seriously. boring combat and pay walls everywhere even if you subscribe monthly. monthly sub only gives you a few perks and allows you to own land, you still have to get cash shop items to do almost anything or you can grind, grind, grind, with a good guild to earn a little bit of gold so you can buy item shops items off the auction house. this game is twice as stifling as SWTOR, at least on there the stuff you could buy from the galactic trader would be permanent unlocks for your account where as in AA it's all temporary crap you'll need to buy constantly (grind for it). this game is an Asian MMO money sink. save your money and your time it's worth more than this title is.

***** eh got to level cap it was enjoyable, especially the exploring and even the crafting the only problem with the crafting... other than the limited labor.... you need land... there is no land.. it's all taken.. not sure about now but basically... if you want to do crafting you need land, crafting is almost essential if you want decent gear or ships and money to do anything in the game.... you need a big guild to play... sure you can plant stuff anywhere but they gets stolen extremely easily and is very risky, even if you got a good hiding spot there's the factor that if you've found it... someone else has found it too and will camp at it, pvp... it's a big too hardcore for me... not a fan of the constant stuns and cc abilities.... I went on recently to check out the other continent aurora or whatever it's called.. it's barren, it's reward-less.... it's this whole beautiful and interesting looking continent and absolutely nothing to do other than mindlessly butcher each other... so I left. :/ unless you like doing the trade runs, really like pvp or making money, the game is pretty lame.. and the whole "freedom" thing is not as free as you would like.... The class sytuems I quite enjoyed, apart from leveling them up indpendatly that was just pointless and lame...gliding and sailing the seas aspects are the only reasons I'd ever decide to play it again honestly. too many games seem to take the "sandbox" aspect and just use it as an excuse not to put content or interesting story or goals into the game... this is one of them for me :/

blues03 know what you mean, the combat in Vindictus felt great and awesome in the beginning but when you've played it for quite a while the feeling jsut wore off. It felt like a grind to kill stuff. Though just recently got into ArcheAge and wow! The freedom, the world feels like this alive and vast thing with stuff happening all the time! stuff to explore, stuff to do it's crazy! Loving the experience this game is giving me! And to note the combat in ArcheAge really isn't that bad, like I never ever wanted to play a game with the combat WoW had as I thought that's what ruined the game for me, but ArcheAge really doesn't have that rigid combat, everything feels a lot more fluent in ArcheAge. Especially with the combo system. I mean it's not amazing but it's a really nice touch. This game is not meant to be played solely for the combat which a lot of people think MMO's need to be nowadays. In my opinion No game can survive with just a good combat-system.

To be honest, you did touch on a lot of the fun parts of the game, but here's some of my additions. After hitting level cap, it isn't a farming simulator. By any means.. The end game is almost completely based around thriving an economy, a personal economy, and a guild economy. For example, my guild went on a trade pack run just last night. We had ~20 guildies transporting ~40 trade packs. We stacked them all into our vehicles, drove them to the dock, and loaded them onto charter ships. We also had 2 clippers and 2 war gallys to guard it, and started our route. It is all real time, so the travel up the coast and into international waters took about 20 minutes (with navigation). Once we were there, it was all about making a b-line for the island, and keeping enemy ships at bay. Luckily, we didn't come across any pirates, and made it to the island safely. Upon arrival, we had a coordinated team go in first, followed by the hauling vehicles. Basically to keep the PvP people off us. Dumped our packs, packed up the ships, and we all loaded onto the attack gallys, and 2 clippers with boarding crews. Spent the better part of 6 hours pirating and destroying ships, and just going to all out war with the reds (enemy faction). There is so much about this game that is just.. Amazing.. The ships are massive, and everything is realistically based on physics, mass, ect. We haven't even gotten into the castle raiding part of it yet either, though I've seen video of guilds gliding over castle walls, and air dropping in to completely decimate entire groups of people, and ripping down an opposing guilds castle to take for their own. The hardest part about the game ~ the grind. The grind long, and I will admit that it sucks. I don't pay attention to anything said during off quests, I just accept them, do them, and get redeem what I want, then move on my way. Exp gains aren't going to be huge in later game, I can get an account to level 20 in about 4 hours, but 20-40 will take you a few days of grinding, and 40-50 will be the same, just longer. The gear grind sucks, yes the best gear in the game is crafted, but in Alpha you don't have many people willing to part with such high level gear, so the inflation is massive. The number one thing I hate: Non-Instance housing. People will make multiple characters, do the first quest to get your small farm (scarecrow) then place it them all in just a way so that they take up the entire section of the housing area they want. They won't plant anything there, and they won't do anything with it. They will pay the taxes on it, and keep it to sell later on. This means that those of us that would like to have our own houses, cannot because people like that will hoard the land. This will probably be fixed - aka 1 farm plot/home per server, but so far it hasn't been. The PvP is the biggest selling point, but you have to be level 30+ to even start in it. Worst part about that, is at level 30 you can still be attacked/ganked by a group of level 50's. However, this only takes place in tension areas, and if you are killed by your own faction they can be sent to jail, or will eventually become a pirate and forced off the island itself permanently. There is instance PvP, and there are some pretty wicked rewards for instance PvP, but it all comes down to practicing your build, and mastering your spec.

I find it funny that most reviews cannot give this game justice, because the scope of it is hard to gather in one video. If I can speak for the PvP, never in a game have I ever felt such consistent tension from other players. Between sports fishing in the sea, to questing in the contested territories, you are a potential target for members of your own faction and the opposite faction and the risk makes everything incredibly thrilling. If you like PvP, you really should give this game a shot. Between making inventive builds and the very active world PvP (Small and large scale), it really deserves your time.

Fevir So basically Archeage is, Aion's gliding system. WoW's transportation options, Flying, sea travel, auto travel, ground mounts, flying mounts. Rift's talent and character progression system, 3 talents, mix up. Guild War 2 game Engine, UI and combat. .... is it the end of MMOs we are looking at here?

jeremy58589721 But it is better. You don't see chat constantly under bombardment by gold spammer. If GM ban X account in P2P, the gold spammer need to hack someone or pay more for new client (which is cost (yes although cost < revenue, but cost still cost). But F2P, everyone can make account. If you want make comparison, compare GW2, WoW and Tera. Which one is constantly spammed by gold spammer ? Everyday you see different low char in Tera spamming gold everywhere. In WoW and GW2, lesser gold spammer.

+Altaris01 When did they do that because I joined a couple of weeks ago for the player driven economy and sandbox aspects. And it totally feels like P2W. I mean the whole economy seems to be controlled and I'm pretty sure by people that pay real money lol Not to mention basic things like changing your characters hair/looks cost real money, or crazy amount of ingame money which people would never pay for something so small.

ShaktiX Well it was a slow process but the 1 real pw2 was the rubedo tunder tree (i dont remember the exact name) that you bought with rl money and guarantee that you get one of the most rare ingredients in the whole game and that was just the start of the fuck fest that is now, the last thing i heard was that they are slling all the mats and some scrolls that makes you the best wep in the game for rl money and armor and more broken things (like a glider that is 120% better than ultimate glider you can get legit playing the game)

Last beta weekend my guild build a battleship and we went sailing together, some people on the battleship and some on their own little clippers (I think we had like 7 of them as an escort). We quickly found another battleship that had a pirate flag with 2 clippers as escort. We decided to attack it and what fun that was. 2 of our clippers went after the battleship and attached themselves to it with their harpoons. Their clippers drove up next to our battleship and I ran to the edge of the ship to fight the players on it off with my magic, then back to the other side when we finally caught up to their ship. By this point our clipper guys used their gliders to board the enemy ship and we captured it. I can't remember when I had ever as much fun in a MMORPG as at that time and that's coming from a hardcore raider who killed Ohmna in WildStar. I will play ArcheAge over WoW even though I have played WoW for ages. The freedom you feel in ArcheAge is not to be underrated. WoW has become such a limited game in what you can do, as if Blizzard tried to remove every amount of choice from expansion to expansion simply because they were afraid players could play the game wrong.

Oddly enough, upon first trying this game I realized that I'd played it a dozen times before; the huge-eyed cartoon characters, ridiculously over-sized weapons, cutesy creatures planted inexplicably in compact little groups, and distinctively awkward dialog (for quests that are conceptually arbitrary) are all hallmarks of the never-ending stream of Korean MMO's that become available to the public every other week. I suspect that Korean kids have to submit a free-to-play MMO before being allowed to graduate from school... and that they all copy off of each others homework in the process.

I love the fact that if you get bored of questing you can go mining or crafting etc and still level. Everything you do in this game rewards you in one way or another. If its a weapon on the auction house go do some trade runs to make gold. Love PvP? Hire yourself out as a body guard to people doing trade runs. Love crafting? Sell your skills as a crafter. Or sell your crafted gear on the auction house. Want to be rich? Play the auction house. Want to experience the game to its fullest? Join a friendly guild and venture out to sea.

Fevir The idea of an entirely open world intrigues me. I'm a world-traveler play-style. How big is the world/map? Is there any lore behind it, even just specific locations? Any dungeons? And I mean, like, *real* dungeons. Like deep caverns, carved out by an ancient race of Dwarves, etc.

I swear this game is basically the successor of lineage 2 at heart. Finally a new *good* open world sandbox pvp game where pvp is just as important as pve, at the same time gear hard to get meaning it has more worth instead of chucking piles of gear to the local npc you run into that buys anything and everything. I'm so tired of pvp being thrown into *queue for arena while standing in town*. At least this is how I see ArcheAge.

The labor points are put in the game so people, first of all want to buy Patron so they earn more, second so you are nearly "forced" if you will, to do quests rather than JUST farming, (literally) mining, etc. Without labor points they would be taking out a lot of the reason people get patron, hell, that's why I got it.

I'm not totally sure if this game is for me. I like doing PvE in other MMOs, but wether it's sieging (or defending, but defenders don't exactly have their armies set up and ready to go right inside the gates at all times now, do they?) a castle on the northern continent of Auroria, or getting ambushed by pirates while sailing the trade routes in this game, PvP looks like a TON of fun in ArcheAge, and will certainly be something I'm getting into once launch comes around for the US. Problem is that since the world is so big, I'm worried that doing trade routes will take at least one hour, if not longer. With that said, what are your thoughts? Would it be something worth waiting (about a week since western launch is on the 16th) for, or will it just be a huge waste of time?

Finally got to play the beta. This game is FANTASTIC. I came away seriously impressed by just how much content is in the game. The skill system is just like Rift which had the best skill system of any MMO out there. Graphics are amazing, combat was fun thanks to the skill system and just the sheer amount of things you can do blows most mmo's out of the water. I had doubts...I typically hate korean mmo's...but Archeage was freaking awesome.

To me this fix to the labor system is if for the things labor points were used in, if they made you have labor points for that specific thing. Like Labor Points for Farming, mining etc.. If I were to use all of my labor points on Farming for example, and then want to go mining I couldn't. But if there were labor points for specific things, then I could use all of my farming labor points, THEN go mining and use those labor points up. The way the have Labor Points atm reminds me of energy on Mobile Games like Brave Frontier. Running out of Labor Points will be too fast, and the regen is way to slow.

After watching videos of archeage I was pretty well turned off from the game, but when I actually played the game I was very impressed. I found it very fun and addicting to craft and gather material while also lvling up my classes. It has a very runescape feel to it which i personally like, but it also has a lot of action. The labor system is brilliant in my opinion because it adds more of a challenge when gathering material and also balances the economy.
