I was diagnosed with aspergers syndrome when i was 7 years old. i was often considered the smartest in the class, though i didn't have too many friends. over the years though i started to sort of grow out of it and started making many more friends. i was doing so well in fact that i was taken out of the classes that were supposed to help me with my social issues in the 7th grade. People had even said they couldn't tell that i was Autistic. I'm really proud of who I've become :)

Pfft, I have Aspergers, and I love to be around people. I don't know what to say at times, but sometimes I don't care, because most conversations are just silly to me. When I'm around my friends, I love to chat, and do things. No, it's not like Autism... although it causes me balance and motor issues where I can bump into walls or door frames by accident. When people talk, they usually talk about someone else, and it just sounds rude and impolite to me, so I don't say much. Now... when I'm sick, or overly tired, I tend to pause (like a stutter?) during talking, or lose track of things as though my mind won't think, but that's in extremely unhealthy situations. It also slows me down a lot from doing my homework in a timely manner when I'm really sick, but I still understand when someone is upset or other social queues because I've learned, and I care a lot about people. I still miss sarcasm, or some other social queues... don't be subtle with an aspie, it's kind of rude really.

First of all, it is ASPERGERS not ASSBURGERS. Second of all, I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in April 2012, a year before this diagnoses was switched to Autism Spectrum Disorder, and honestly, I LIKE the fact Asperger's Syndrome is grouped with other degrees of Autism because it is as the term says, a spectrum, it just makes it easier all around to diagnose and to explain the syndrome.

One of the theories is that ASD is a dysfunction with the brains ability to process information. In autism the brain slows down its functions and ignores stimuli as a defense mechanism. In Asperger's the brain shuffles and prioritizes its functional ability to respond to stimuli differently than a normally functioning brain.

As a 20 year old male in the UK with Asperger's Syndrome, for me I have often found myself having to teach people about my condition, which is incredibly frustrating considering that one of the main things I personally struggle with is socialising and verbal communication, which is kind of ironic. The way I explain it is that I have Asperger's, which is a form of Autism, so I struggle with certain things people on the Autistic spectrum have, but perhaps not as severely, especially with socialisation, friendships and managing anxiety. Yeah. That summary works for me, personally, but I've known other people, both Autistic and with Aspergers, where that summary wouldn't work for them. It's all unique, I guess. ^^

Why do I say this? well for one before I had internet I use to be really social and out going, but since the internet I am what is now called having aspergers syndrome which is a stupid way to describe people that discover the internet.
@dragonizzle123
11 жыл бұрын
She stated quite a lot of things, if you re-watch it and pay attention you should learn at least something from it. Please keep in mind that they do have a time limit on their episodes so they have to cram as much in as possible, so it's not the easiest thing to do. Also I'd like to point out that a lot of people use the internet as a form of socialisation now days, but there are a lot of defining characteristics that someone with ASD has that makes them distinguishable from other people. I'm assuming you have ASD, so I'll assume that on a certain level you can't connect emotionally with other people, but you can connect physically (e.g. someone is hurt). That's just one of the many possible characteristics of someone with ASD. My guess behind your post is that you don't want to admit you have a disability, and in your eyes you see it as a fault on the system's behalf. If you truly feel that then you can go have another evaluation and plead your case, I suppose.

People are often surprised when I say that I have Asperger's, they think I'm rather normal. But it also takes some time to understand these things. I'm not sure I like the separation. People with Asperger's can be very different from those with general Autism. The level of Autism and Asperger's can also vary a lot between individuals. Some have rather obvious characteristics while others only have some traits that can be hard to both spot and understand. I have some form of high functioning Autism (it means to perform much better than normal people in some areas for intelligence and intellectual reasoning) with some traits of Asperger's. But some of my traits go against the definitions, for example I can be very good at social interactions in real life. But I also study psychology and philosophy. Being Autistic is however in many cases kind of like being retarded. So if people have a certain negative impression of Autism, it get's a bit weird when you tell them about yourself. Many people just kind of treat you like crap because they don't understand.
@WildWestSamurai
11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get the same reaction. I've even received, "Really? You don't act retarded." A lot of it definitely has to do with lack of awareness and misinformation. When people think of autism, they think of "Rain Man" or "Forrest Gump". They don't even realize there are different levels of autism.
@trinix777

Indeed. It's however understandable that people think the way they do, people with Autism and Asperger's are in most cases kind of problematic. But there are also those who are very intelligent and intellectual. The mentality to always look down on people because of their diagnosis often results in losses of useful potentials.

My son is three and he was "diagnosed" as autistic last year. He doesn't have conversations with people but he communicates in other ways, mostly by using his hands to pull you to what he wants. It's amazing to me how little real information there is about autism. There are plenty of descriptions about the behaviors but nothing definitive about cause or real "treatment." I don't see him as sick or disabled or anything like that. He is and no doubt will continue to be highly capable of whatever he wants. Like with any other person, it's simply a matter of understanding him.

Especially when the majority of people dealing with the jargon are idiots who aren't even able to distinguish the words "autism" and "aspergers" - they hear that it's in the autism spectrum and because of that they just call it "autism" anyway, so may as well just simplify it.

***** I think that in what I would consider to be the "popular consciousness', there are certain ideas people get about Autism as a whole with films such as Rainman. Don't get me wrong, Dustin Hoffman did a wonderful and endearing portrayal of an idiot savant. While it is also a good way to educate people about that particular type of Autism, it also gives rise to the impression that this is all Autism is. Asperger's as a separate definition allows us (myself being diagnosed with the condition as well) to form our own identity within the popular conciousness-if anything the name should continue to be used in public discussion.

If doctors are revising the definition of asperger's, then let's discuss revising the name as well. There is no romanticism behind being an asperger, so instead, why not change the name to Asgard's syndrome? If Autism and Asperger's are regarded as separate, I'd rather be an Asgardian than an asperger.

Here in the US the Federal position (i.e. social services, education, medical services) is to no longer use Aspergers as a label. Cognitive dissonance is hard to label because it is hard to diagnose, hard to treat, hard to study due to it's internal and complex nature, but most forms of CD are now lumped together under a broad category called wide spectrum autism. Just thought I would put that out there.

Asperger's syndrome is to general a diagnosis. I have asperger's syndrome by definition of being akward around people in most social situations, whom I have difficulty trusting as a collective. Even if people I trust are included in the group the more people in the group the more reserved I become and that is what makes me seem akward. I blame my upbringing in my distrust in the human species. The saying "trust isn't given, it's earned" couldn't make anymore sense to me.

Another thing I should point out: Does having a disorder which affects social skills also contribute to higher intelligence? It seems perfectly plausible to me that one could be the direct result of the other. Less time spend with friends could lead to more time spent reading and studying. Conversely, higher IQs can make a child feel like a social outcast. (I know it's a cliché, but let's face it. Nerds ARE the first to get beat up by the jocks.) This can lead to poor self-confidence and a reluctance to associate with other children. Or both can be the result of something circumstantial, like being an only child (as I was), which means spending more time with adults, and thusly, developing intellectual thinking at a faster rate, but simultaneously spending less time developing peer-relationships, which would speed up the rate of learning social interactions with equals.
@JMcMillen
11 жыл бұрын
I think it's more that people with Asperger's tend to think outside the box when faced with a problem, so they tend to come up with unique solutions. Solutions that make complete sense if someone asks how they came to their conclusion. It's like they see the world from a slightly different point of view from normal people. Their social skills are affected because they aren't quite in sync with everybody else. Given time they can make friends but that requires the other person to be patient and not dismiss them right away. It just takes a little time for them to get in sync with others.

@DjCosmicRush

I would argue that higher intelligence would cause greater empathy but the more you sense the more desensitized you become. overstimulation will cause the child to not react to events that normally trigger reaction, they learned the hard way that this leads to horrible consequences. I also agree there is many different causes. i think someone with more emotion may tend to act less emotional or even completely flat like in schizophrenia, because they learn to refrain all action from being overexposed, look up learned helplessness.

I worry about calling certain things disorders. If someone has higher than normal intelligence but does not conform to social norms why is that a disorder. Look up the "gros Micheal" do you really want people to all behave the same?

To add, for people to assume that the most common behavior is correct is complete crap because that could only be true if our society knew everything about the universe, so those who are closer or further from the truth will act accordingly, but the common person is conditioned to assume that all inconsistent behavior is flawed. Unfortunately this is inevitable if our society is to be successful as a whole it seems.

Usually when there's a dramatic increase in reported cases of a particular disorder, it seems to me like a red flag that we're over-diagnosing or mistaking a "less popular" disorder for a "more popular" one. It's not just doctors and psychologists, either. For a while there a few years ago, there seemed to be a surge of "self-diagnosed" people with Asperger's, who just read a few symptoms off a website, and immediately started blogging and posting on message boards about being "aspie." The fact is that SOME people with poor social skills have a disorder, but most don't, and SOME people with behavioral disorders are on the autistic spectrum, but some aren't. We're never going to find a way of dealing with these issues (drugs, counseling, accommodating, accepting, some combination?) if we keep mashing them all together and looking for a single umbrella solution.

I feel like Asperger's is used as a bit of a catch-all. No doubt, there is probably a group of people who have a high-functioning autism (and thus a direct biological cause specifically for the aspergers symptoms), but that group doesn't include everyone with poor social skills, low demonstrated empathy, extremely strong interests, or stunted motor skills. The problem I have with Asperger's is that is places normal variation into a category associated with other symptoms and no chance of recovery. Suppose someone presents as having poor social skills, and a nearly obsessive interest in a specific subject. The diagnosis that would likely be given is Asperger's, and the person is told that it is not their fault that they can't interact properly, therapies are present to help to "cope". Asperger's seems like the most obvious and easy diagnosis, but those symptoms are also VERY common as 2ndary symptoms of a wealth of other disorders. Consider someone with bipolar II (possibly with more inclination toward hypo mania than depression). By being out of synch with the rest of the world, the patient isolates themself indirectly, and during hypomania obsesses over certain topics, even, perhaps, finds that certain topics can elicit the hypomania. For someone who is hypomanic, the rest of the world can appear too slow or not intense enough to keep up with them, and thus isolation is encouraged and social skills diminish. When/if depressive symptoms occur, the person will equally not be social. Or consider social anxiety where the primary coping mechanism is to attempt to draw a wall between the patient's feelings and the outside world. The patient secretly avoids interaction when possible, and when interacting, attempts to guard from anticipated pain/anxiety by appearing unaware of others and trying not to "connect" in order to stay at an emotional distance. This could present exactly as Asperger's while, in fact, the patient has normal innate sociability. In fact, in this case, diagnosis of Asperger's could be very harmful, as it encourages the common feeling in social anxiety that the patient is socially defective. Asperger's can be applied to many, many underlieing problems that present themselves differently in more "introverted" or "nerdy" types of people. It doesn't describe a cause, but a set of symptoms/features (hence Asperger's SYNDROME) that can easily be connected as a tertiary effect of a disorder (if primary are the causes, and 2ndary are the direct effects of those causes). As such, I don't feel like it should be something that is explicitly diagnosed, rather observed as being problematic and meriting further exploration. I feel like we shouldn't be investigating the brains of people with Asperger's, but investigating what other disorders can persent with Asperger's Syndrome, and how to reach that core problem. Asperger's itself (in most cases), I feel is the the disease, but describes a and common manifestation of the effects of other diseases in certain groups of patients.

For people who play Minecraft, for people who are enthusiastic about computers, for people who like to collect something... Especially I hear bronies (and maybe anime fans) being called autists. I've also been called an "autist" so many times that I've started to call myself an "autist" too, in certain situations, even if I haven't been diagnosed with it! Anyone who's uses enough time online should know the new meaning of "autism"; Fedora hats, GNU/Linux, My Little Pony, etc... But not necessarily real autism :D Kinda sucks, but I can live with this :/ But I suppose real autists don't like this new use for the word "autist" at all, though.

As someone with Asperger's, It does have its good things and its bad. I'm great with money, and technology but I'm god awful at talking to people verbally. Especially over the phone. I'm really quiet but I don't mind typing or texting. The human mind is a weird thing, and I doubt we will ever understand just how complex all of its processes are. I still lock up sometimes when talking to my girlfriend of 2 years. It drives her nuts but what're you gonna do?

Same for me. While on skype I talk more than that I would talk. Also I tend to write a lot of my toughts out for some reason and I end up just deleting them. I can also somewhat related to the girlfriend thing. Whenever I try to say something to the girl I like I can't bring anything out of my mouth. But that might just have something to do with really liking a person and not Aspergers.

I have Asperger and don’t know if it should be part of the Autism spectrum or not. What I want to see thought is a better understanding of both Ashpergers and Autism in girls and women. Since for me at least, getting a diagnoses has taken years and I have to wonder how many other women, have had to wait as long or longer then I have to find out that they have one of these conditions. All I know is my own experience and that involved everything from people calling it dyslexia, mild cerebral palsy, or saying that I was clumsy. I am not looking for sympathy, but it’s like I said, I think that for the most part people lack an understanding of how this condition presents itself in girls and women vs how it tends to present itself in boys and men.

Contrary to what I saw as very misleading stock photos used in this video... Asperger's doesn't make you physically look any different from anyone else. Also, I'm pretty sure it's "Asperger Syndrome". That's how I've seen it referred to in medical texts, it could work either way I guess, I'm not sure. Anyone have a definitive answer?

I've never officially been diagnosed with Asperger's, but I've read up on the symptoms and I'm pretty sure I have it. I know that for some people, having Asperger's can be a huge benefit, but for me, it's been a detriment in so many ways which are too many to list here. Again, that is assuming I have it, of course.

Autism is misunderstood I think. It's described as a lack of empathy, which is apparently why autistics act out. I think that's more or less totally wrong. It seems to me, from my background as an engineering student and Asperger's patient, that an autistic has a fully functioning mind, but bad connections between the conscious mind and voluntary functions of the body. Here is what Asperger's is like: Take above average intelligence, increase the intensity of negative emotions, remove the ability to filter information and reality, move the median emotional state to meloncolly, lower the threshold of physical pain, and reduce coordination and social skills by about 50%.

I HATE seeing Susan Boyle in the thumbnail for anything to do with Asperger’s. It gives the very false impression that we’ll all be OK if we can learn to "perform." That we’re all just waiting to be discovered and brought out of our shells. That we’ll finally be loved by everyone if we can prove our value to society. Not one of those things is true. We’re all different, of course, but she’s a particularly bad example to set in front of the world. Oh, and even though we’re quite a few years on from the removal of Asperger’s as a diagnosis, I’m still seeing a lot of people fighting the change. So many people who were diagnosed with Asperger’s will adamantly claim they’re not like those other people - the ones with AUTISM. They somehow feel superior and don’t want to be lumped in with those they deem inferior. Personally, I love the all-encompassing term Autism Spectrum. It’s much easier to explain to people. Sexuality is a spectrum. Which hand you use for most tasks is a spectrum. Perhaps the best terms are the more clinical-sounding terms: neurotypical and neurodivergent. Those who fall into the "typical" range of brain function and those whose brain function falls outside that range. My friends seemed to react better to those terms than any other after I "came out" and shared my story.

It took my doctor 19 years of not getting Close to an asperger's diagnose. Just like With Bechterews, depression, sleeping problems, forced thoughts, eating problems, murder thoughts, ocd and rainbowhinn inflamation I had to fight to get help. I still haven't received help for more than my Bechterews (which took 11 years to diagnose...), rainbowhinn inflamation (which took 6 years to diagnose, I went to an expert on my own and found out being on antibiotics for 6 years straight for an infection was very wrong and I should have had cell poisoning and steroids instead.) and lastly he helped me With my constipation, which was quite easy cause of the obvious symptoms. I'm currently the world's sickest man With over 16 different conditions total. To qualify to be on my list the conditions must excibit symptoms multiple times a month and have lasted for 4 years or longer. It's no fun being that sick, but it's quite an accomplishment.

Evolution is a gradual process. I don't think our brain would evolve so quickly. Think about it, a few decades ago no one knew what autism was. If it was evolution, it'd be a matter of at least a few centuries.

my brother has Aspergers and his fiance has it as well. My brother was diagnosed almost 20 years ago. The main thing I see with Aspergers is lack of common sense. and you can't be sarcastic around them because they take everything literal. he also is VERY good at writing novels and if he likes something he can know everything about it in seconds and remembers all the details. he used to watch whole movies in his head by just saying every line in the movie with his eyes closed. his favorite was small soldiers. he is horrible at math though.

I got it, and I would say I am a bit socialy awkvard, I refuses to lie, I know to not point out stuff and so that hurt others,(unless they ask, then I am honest) as some people with asperger have. But I dont like to make white lies either. I personally think its a big difference between aspberger and autism, Its like saying that someone that got nerv damage from neck down and cant move is the same as epilepsy. Similar in some ways, but not the same.

@MrTheKatalyst

Considering aspergers to be nothing more than a case of "autisim-lite" essentially might make it easier for your average person to understand, there are some similarities. But I don't think it's exactly correct. There's a difference between somebody with high-functioning autism and somebody with aspergers (I've known a few of both types in my life.) It is important from a medical standpoint to figure out the difference in order to decide the best method of treatment and such. I doubt this standard will last all that long.

A guy doesn't need pity for screwing up a presentation and then proceeding to take it out on the teacher, with or without aspergers. He obviously had stage fright, which is normal, but if he knew he'd have a serious problem presenting in class he should have taken it up with the teacher and not put himself in a position to fail. My point is, that didn't happen because he had aspergers, it happened because he didn't take charge of his needs like everyone needs to do.

I have what people are calling here 'Ass-burgers' myself and I don't find myself different than anyone else, I really do find it weird how people like me are being clumped with people who can't even function in society. Sure, I might slip up socially now and again but that can be easily fixed up with a laugh and the word 'awkward.' I actually find that I tend to get along with other people with Asperger's than people without it, it's because they're different and unique.
