Outside therapeutic environment, we find a dearth of compassion. The US culture appears to be transactional in the sense of avoidance of empathy and intimacy. The intimacy-avoidant practice of misattribution to imaginary deities, religion, misdirecting our natural, evolved emotions of love and all affiliative senses have seriously damaged those locked into such beliefs. Children are rejected, in families so deluded. We have found them dogmatically consigned to "damnation" for disbelief. A similar emotional avoidance occurs through steady alcohol use, where emotional cognition is dampened by that GABAergic substance, and intimacy replaced by a quite psychopathic quest, through use, of callousness toward any other[s] with whom one has disagreement. Such a culture may require intervention through teaching greater compassion, affiliative openness, early in development, though the primary role models may continue to have the greatest effect on specific neural connectivities related to the very ability to experience such openness to compassion and normal attachments.

Great comment. Thank you! And absolutely. I think you nail it with the importance of affiliative openness, connection with others, a sense of security and safeness, and attachment. It can be so hard to come by in this modern world, although it is more important than ever!
