Plant disease is defined as deviation from normal physiological functioning of a plant, resulting from the continuous, prolonged ‘irritation’ caused by phytopathogenic organisms (infectious or biotic disease agents).
Plant Pathogens and Crop Security
Plant pathogens can be devastating when they strike a large crop. Most plant pathogens are very specific for a particular plant species or group. In very few instances the plant pathogen may produce a toxin that is harmful to humans (eg, mycotoxins). As with livestock production, crops are often grown in highly concentrated settings over vast expanses of land. This makes them a vulnerable target for the pathogen. This is especially true for cereal grains. Rice and wheat are two crops that supply the majority of the world’s daily intake of calories. Any pathogen targeting these two crops could have serious implications for the economy and nutritional status of a population
There are numerous examples of plant diseases throughout history. e.g., karnal bunt in wheat, rice blast in rice, plum pox virus (PPV) in stone fruits, and soybean rust in soybeans.
