Good to hear that DevOps is getting known better and in more coherent way. This presentation is very similar to what I speak in my lectures. You are even using the same pictures :-). That's awesome!

DevOps is a hyped-up term, but it comes down to implementing common sense by working better together. DevOps developers can use CATLIGHT ( tfs-alerts.com ) to get actionable alerts about your builds, tasks, and pull requests.

That ISN'T an ITIL "Process" it is the ITIL lifecycle, listing all the processes. However, ITIL is just a framework to pick and choose from, having consulted in many organisations of varying sizes, complexity and markets, I have yet to come across any company that needed to or indeed did, implement all these processes. DevOps isn't in competition with ITIL, there are overlaps and interface points, but DevOps doesn't address a lot of the requirements of best practice in IT, we still require thought around how to do Change Management that is fit for the business risk, Financial Management to ensure costs are visible & charged back, IT Strategy that ensures that IT delivers value that the business wants, at the cost it can accept. DevOps is not a silver bullet that answers these problems, or many other problems encountered in enterprise IT environments, it does not negate the need for a Service mindset, it doesn't really touch on strategy and good service design, or relating all activity back to business drivers. I would go so far as to say that introducing DevOps into an organisation that does not already have process for many of these domains/challenges would be like gold plating your bathroom without repairing the toilet that won't flush.

The DevOps methodology is used in automated testing, continuous integration and continuous delivery. devops itechcraft.com/devops/ methodology helps testers save a lot of time on running autotests and doing work.

Not quite sure why it is being pitched against ITIL in this video, well I am, but I won't go into that. The "ITIL process" shown, isn't an ITIL process, but a list of processes that ITIL advises for consideration. I would seriously question the issues levied at ITIL. 1) Siloed - A good ITIL implementation isn't siloed, in fact the processes should be heavily integrated. Just like DEVOPS has phases so does ITIL, that doesn't make either of them siloed. It's largely just an educational concept anyway, to help with understanding and learning the lifecycle of a service. An integrated toolset can assist in delivering value and ensuring an integrated not siloed approach. 2) Expensive - It can be, yup. However, the basic concepts of ITIL can be adopted cheaply. There is a critical point were the focus is on improving quality at a lower ROI, but this is dependant on the implementation. For some organisations that higher quality lower risk approach is preferable. A banking organisation for example would lose credibility and business if it focussed it's IT management on agility at the cost of risk. 3) Slow - not sure if you mean slow to deploy or slow to operate ITIL processes? You can deploy the basics of ITIL pretty easily, easier than DevOps. Slow to operate? well that is the sign of a bad ITIL implementation. ITIL is a framework not a standard, you implement what helps your organisation, never implement directly as stated in the books. 4) Trust Issues - hmmmm, I think some poor quality consultants have given ITIL a bad name by ignoring the first page that states only implement what provides value to you. Also the tool manufacturers such as BMC Remedy and ServiceNow claim to sell tools that "do ITIL straight out of the box", and that defeats the very first page of ITIL, do what creates value. Anyway, the concept of agile methods, cloud and automated testing are perfectly aligned to ITIL, you just have to develop your Change Management, Test & Validate, Release & Deploy and Configuration Management so that they can handle agile sprints. Many organisations with well implemented ITIL processes do this already. DevOps has many gaps is not as wide reaching or mature as ITIL, but they can compliment each other. There is benefit in DevOps, (although it needs to create a consensus about what it is!), it can and should be used to ensure that organisations do not create monolithic ITIL (in-)capabilities. The benefits are shown here, but there are risks, change is risk and sprints create a constant state of change. DeOps isn't all encompassing for an operation to ensure it can deploy and operate services, with good governance and improvement aligned to customer needs, but it does have some good advice and knowledge. The agile culture can be great for the business but when it goes wrong it can damage corporate image and have financial and regulatory issues. DevOps isn't a silver bullet and certainly isn't right for all organisations.

Martin Hall Agree! Great comment! Not one framework, guide, process, method, etc... is a solution for all. It has to align with what works for the organization or business in question. But definitely like the DevOps concept.

I still have no idea what dev ops is... the best I've got from your talk is "a successor of agile development". Is it a subtype of agile? is non-agile but agile inspired? how it can be different? how it must be different?
