This great. I am a school principal (with an undergrad minor in geography). I wish I could find a way to make this a feature of the middle school curriculum. Maybe it would energize students around social studies?

You're a good principal if you're thinking about improving your children's participation in social studies

As a Professional Digital Cartographer; when Digital Technology was still quite New; I used the British Package Lites II. U can see some of the earlier mapping displays from the British Library.... The Main Official "Purveyor" of Digital Mapping in the: (U.K.) is the: "Ordnance Survey" Head Quarters, based in Southampton. England. I can say: Practically and Categorically; their: "Land" Maps are Essentially Perfect! I myself am a: "Dinosaur" Specialist of the Scale: 1:1250 and 1:2500. The Science is two: Intersecting Magnetic Field on a digitizing table....(It is called Halls-Effect!) The Tool we used is called a: "Puck" and NOT a Mouse..... (* Early 1990s Tech! *) In my day there was only two layers to each digital file; the Gird-Layer and the Contents-Layer. Since; technology has progress exponentially since those times; alas,.......this doe NOT apply to my Salary..... Further information; U might want to extract from me concerning Digital Mapping is the following: 3D - Photogrammetry Techniques. A Technique and Skill that is very Rare Indeed I had acquired from a Firm Called:- Simmons Mapping (UK) Ltd. Somerset. They have been taken over by: BLOM AEROFILMS LIMITED. They used a Photogrammetry Techniques developed by the R.A.F. to update and edit existing digital maps; and also to "Edge-Match" and link to other maps... A Very fine documentary about this particular skill is a One Hour Long BBC - 02. Program Called: "Operation Crossbow!"; Here is the link:- www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011cr8f -------------- Furthermore; There is an even quirkier: "Line-Scanning-Only Technique!"; Developed in: "Cambridge" called: Lazertrak. (I will NOT tell U the operational Problems of this machine; otherwise we will be here all day....!!!) Your can know all about it from the (Mid-1970s); by the following site:- pghardy.net/lsl/lsl_history.html FASTRAK, Lasertrak, and VTRAK. Bon Appetit.... Oh; one last thing.... Remember: Computing and I.T. was still viewed as Odd!!! and a Novelty; in the Early 1990s..... Most Blokes were still into "Ford Escort XR3is and the whole: "James Bond" thing.... Times have changed....
