What is true education?
“Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.”
- G.K. Chesterton
This definition clashes with our modern, vocational, idea of education. It’s not that vocational training is bad, it is only harmful when we call training education, and forsake real education.
Real education is the formation of a soul, but not from a formula or a test-tube, but from a kind of lineage - a receiving; an inheriting of something passed down from generation to generation.
This is why at Roman roads press we emphasize the reading of the great books. Not just because they are great. Because they are your roots. Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Dante, Milton, Shakespeare and so many others cherished and preserved (predominately by Christians and the Church) are your roots.
To give yourself and your children an education that is not based on these roots is to be rootless, culturally adrift, historically unmoored. It is no education.
At Roman Roads Press, we help families nourish these roots. Our mission is to help families pass the soul of our society from one generation to the next, mending and watering roots that have been broken or starved.
Join us in our mission, use our tools. Come Inherit the Humanities with us.
