@@PHILOnotes If you are truly a Professor of Ethics as you say then why is it you did not correct some of the definitions she used? Meta ethics is defined wrongly here. She thinks meta ethics describes acts themselves as moral or immoral. She does not mention the distinctions between Psychology and Philosophy definitions to Ethics. She gives the Psychology definition just like everyone else who claims to Study Ethics. Philosophers focus on Normative Ethics when describing "Morality". People outside of Philosophy do the other stuff like she does in the video. Not a good description of the subject and certainly brings up the question "WHY STUDY THIS ANYWAY?" especially if this is not applicable everywhere simultaneously. We already know what subjectivism is. We don't need another word for what we already have if she is correct.

9:05, killing is intrinsically wrong, but saving people's lives on the contrary, is intrinsically good. Why is killing intrinsically wrong? (the question is metaethical, the answers reflect philosophical theories). If the you know that she is a terrorist, know how she would carry out its plan, and know the exact imminent danger to life and property in a situation, then you are justified regardless of her motivation - but should you aim to kill her? Anyway, first and foremost, is it ethical to use the term "terrorist" to a person who has not "terrorized" anyone yet or, is still about to carry her mission?

Hello - Great work. BUT something confused me A LOT. "the action of killing the terrorist is wrong according to metaethics" - Metaethics??? (does metaethics care about that?) It is wrong according to Kantian deontology/ethics but not according to Utilitarianism - both are ethical theories (under the category Normative ethics). The last slide is very confusing/wrong - or i totally misunderstood the whole thing. :D

@PHILOnotes

there are things that we simply have to do outside the bounds of morality, and i think one of them is ignoring questions. it may not be proper or appropriate in human relations, but i have the right to ignore questions, especially if i am not legally bound to do so.

All was well until the example of police officer. It says according to meta it is wrong which is completely nonsensical thing to say. Actually meta ethics is the only means to understand actions as ethical or not as normative ethics is simply synthesis of meta into daily life

you're wrong in the end, metaethics does not judge action if they are right or wrong, metaethics asks the question : what do mean by good ? the two major ethical theories are deontology and consequentialism : deontology would that killing is always wrong, consequentialism would say (maybe) that saving lives by killing one or two person is morally permissible or actually good.

Most of this video is good. However, the distinction between metaethics and normative ethics at the end is VERY wrong! Metaethics and normative ethics are different *domains* of inquiry, that is, they ask & answer different questions. Metaethics and normative ethics do NOT answer the *same* questions--so they do not ever disagree with each other about whether the cop should shoot the terrorist, nor about any other ethical question. Metaethics and normative ethics are NOT different *theories* which could give different judgments on the same issue (like utilitarianism vs deontology are). It is a different kind of distinction. This is a pretty serious mistake.

We have to answer three questions to consider our action is moral. This is an isolated incident. Definitely our reaction will be of exceptional nature. Otherwise there is no such thing as freewill which is the gift of God. Any way the questions are A..What is motive behind the action ? B...Is the reason is universally acceptable? C.. killing is immoral then prevention is moral. In the said example the person involved is killed to prevent further murders not only in the present but in future also. .killing is immoral but here we are forced to choose between killing a person and allowing him to murder. We have freewill to choose either of them and there is no question any doubt. . If we don't act we will be committing a sin of far reaching consequences.

3. What is your understanding of applied ethics? As discussed in the video, applied ethics guides individuals in their choice of action. It is commonly observed with the individuals suffering from a moral problem like abortion or euthanasia. Applied ethics attempt to resolve the conflicting issues that surrounds the particular moral problems.

I disagree that ethics and morality are related. I believe they are more distinct. Morality is based on social norms, but those actions may not always actually result in the greater good. Ethics is concerned with what actions actually result In greater good regardless if those actions upset social norms.

Since i dont believe in free will ethics and morality has a very different assumptions. The evolution of behavior in our inborn behavior and in the evolution of society drive miral behavior. Whatever helps survival largly wins. Empath for example may have survival value as seen in hurd animals where the older, stronger adults protect the weaker younger members.

Why do people always get this WRONG? In philosophy there are specific sets of Principles in Ethics. In Philosophy there are at least 4 main branches of Ethics that are taught: Descriptive Ethics, Normative Ethics, Meta Ethic and Applied Ethics. All of these are well defined. Normative Ethics is the specific branch of Philosophy that covers "MORALITY" and is not anything like you described. What you described is "Descriptive Ethics" which is not part of actual Philosophy departments in any University. Descriptive Ethics is closer to Psychology & Anthropology which is why it is seen as SUBJECTIVE and useless. Descriptive Ethics says that some authority figure gets to make the rules essentially ---hint to why this is SUBJECTIVE! You will NOT find this definition in "NORMATIVE ETHICS". When Philosophers speak to others on their LEVEL about "Morality" they exclusively speak about NORMATIVE ETHICS. When teachers speak on "morality" they often do what you did and NOT EVEN MENTION NORMATIVE ETHICS correctly. Normative means there is a systematic way --not a subjective way to a "UNIVERSAL SET OF RULES" in a given domain. What good is Morality if it does not apply everywhere on Earth? We already have systems like this why do we need another WORD or TERMINOLOGY for what we already have words for? Morality ought to be a UNIVERSAL SET OF RULES & PRINCIPLES that govern all people otherwise what is the point of it? Ethics is subjectivism basically based on what you define here. Ethics is based on social norms NOT morality. Ethics rules that can apply in NY can exist but those rules do not apply and will not work in Spain. Why study Ethics again? Morality should be studied because it differs from Ethics as it applies UNIVERSALLY where Ethics applies to smaller groups and not to everyone at the same time. If you do not make this distinction EARLY then why do this? Meta Ethics in Philosophy is SEMANTIC; It is purely about the language used in the field of Normative Ethics. Meta Ethics is not behavior evaluative such as act x is immoral. Meta Ethics is a meta language only. Where did you get these definitions?
