Christianity situates the human being as inherently and innately sinful. As a therapist, I cannot think of anything that is more deeply inimical to human flourishing than incessant vigilance, self-doubt, and irresolvable guilt in the face of a silent and hateful judge. It took me years to deal with the hate that was expressed toward me in the guise of moral guidance and “god’s love”-it’s so endemic to the religion (and everything it touches) that it harms us even as it tries to express compassion and care.
