Advice from someone living in Thailand as Expat: Do not visit Koh Tao. Nothing hurts this Mafia family more than a complete tourism boycott. And when they are no longer able to bribe their way out of any criminal investigation then there may finally justice be served. I lived on Koh Tao for three years where I was a freelance diving instructor, and married a Thai woman who was also the owner of a small bar. There were several murders and rapes of tourists during the time I lived there, and the Thai's were always very quick to blame immigrant Burmese workers. I left the island and together with my wife moved to the mainland in 2008. There were only three policemen on the island when I lived there. One was responsible for collecting protection money, another was responsible for the drug business (reselling confiscated drugs) and the other officer I am not sure about. At the time of David and Hanna's murder at the King's Rock on south end of Sairee beach I had already returned to the UK, but kept in contact with a few Koh Tao residents. Apparently it was common knowledge on the island who had committed the crimes, but people were either paid off, or too scared to say anything. Yes AC Bar and the son of the owner were mentioned to me and not just by one person, but by several including Thais and foreigners. I was also told that they were responsible for other murders and rapes that had occurred previously. There are one or two members of other less prominent families who it is said have committed similar crimes on Koh Tao, but Burmese workers have always been found guilty.

@@bildo8053 Because those families who's members are responsible are like a mafia and those that they can't intimidate or pay off simply disappear. Innocent Burmese workers were usually framed for the crimes. There were only 3 cops on the island when I lived on the island and each was responsible for running different rackets. For example, check points set up at random at night where visitors were stopped and searched for drugs, forced to pay off the cops if they were caught with any illicit substances, and those same confiscated substances were then sold on by people working for the cops.

The pool and area they chose to go swimming in was in fact closed, a whole section of that hotel was closed due to corona virus with the power supply turned off, to the rooms, pool etc (hence cctv cameras not working). So there was no staff there & no other guests, those guests shouldn't have been in that area. The tragedy possibly happened that the big guy got into trouble in the pool and his wife jumped in to try to save him and got into trouble herself trying to get him out. A swimming instructor explained to me that often in panic inexperienced people instead of throwing a floating life saving device to the person in trouble they jump in themselves, this is the wrong reaction. Also remember this pool is 2.2 metres deep. Anyone can drown in only 2 inches of water with less than half a cup of water ingested into the lungs. Swimming pools are dangerous.

We went for two weeks and the last two nights we were there my and my wife stayed in our room just so we could relax. We sat on the balcony with beers, ordered cocktails and food up to our room and tbh, it was the best two nights we had, because I felt safe. I have a very close friend who had drugs planted on them by a hostel owner minutes before the police came into the hostel, the police arrested them and drove them into the middle of nowhere, the police threatened to shoot them in the knee before arresting them and taking their money telling them not to contact the British embassy. Thankfully they did and thankfully they had a contact over there who worked as a lawyer. Whilst in a jail cell they were threatened if they didn’t plead guilty to owning drugs. They ended up going to trial after a week in a jail cell where they were chained to all of the other prisoners (including a pregnant Thai woman who was sentenced to death just before them) thankfully with help from the lawyer they were let off and banned from entering thialand for 10 years. They watched the latest show (murder in paradise…. I think) and pointed out one of the policemen interviewed in it as one of the ones that arrested him. The place is corrupt as hell and I am so thankful that they didn’t end up the way these poor people did. (This version of the story is cut down, they went through hell whilst in jail)

I went to Koh Tao back in 2019 and although I didn’t know about the island’s dark history with mysterious deaths, it was the one destination in Thailand where the vibes didn’t feel right and I happily left it early for Koh Phangan. And after watching this video and thinking back on one particular night when I went on a pub crawl on Koh Tao is giving me goosebumps and chills. One friend who went to the island before me warned me to avoid one particular bar (I can’t remember the name of the bar for some reason!) I was with a big group and I wasn’t really drinking much so I felt safe. I only had one beer at that place but after we left that place I honestly don’t remember much and I’m not even sure how I made it back to my room. I just remember calling my friend in Germany and telling her I was reallyyyyy drunk even though I only had like 2 beers the entire night and she kept me company over the phone. I wonder if my fate would have been different for worse if I was a white tourist instead of a SE Asian tourist who looks local. I honestly loved traveling in Thailand and loved every destination I visited but Koh Tao was the one exception where the vibes just felt off for some reason and after watching this video and learning about the island’s history, it finally all makes sense to me.

His body was found washed on a beach and he was wearing regular clothes with the hotel key and some form of ID. The reports tried to insinuate that he did this to himself and that he was heavily tattooed so he must have caused it. He didn’t have one tattoo as far as I’m aware. As I am Thai, this video is very useful and very informative... here’s why the legal system fails in Thailand. 1. Workforce overload - especially in Koh Tao where they’re many tourists and police need to travel between 2 islands, causing the delay when bad thing happens. there’s DNA analysis but with delay and poor techniques, some cannot be used. 2. Serial Killer (or killers) on the loose - there’s no system which connect cases with the same Method of Operation. Serial killers in Thailand (a number of 3 from my knowledge) got caught by their own mistakes. Therefore, if there’s no DNA, no camera, no CCTV, so there’s no confession. Thanks to you and your channel for collecting and making a connection. As this things may be continue for some period of time, here’s some advice. 1. travel to other location - there are many islands which are as beautiful as Koh Tao, such as Krabi, Lipe, Phuket. 2. Avoid unnecessary argument with locals - you don’t know when you are talking to the mafia. you can get beaten up. 3. if you travel to remote location, you should travel with your trust Thai friends. most are generous and not harmful 4. always keep update to your relatives

As someone who lived and worked in Thailand for 3 years, during orientation for the job our HR discussed to avoid Koh Tao because it is known for many disappearances of foreigners. But living there you will see the dark side of the whole Thailand. Corruption is one of the many things you will see. And these disappearances of foreigners happens everywhere in Thailand and also there are many cases of “jumpers” for foreigners. Many buildings there has cases of foreigners “jumping” off the building and the amazing part is it won’t make it to the news. Some foreigner “jumped” from the rooftop of my building, I saw the mess myself and tried searching what actually happened but it was never on the news. And police there? No help at all especially to foreigners. There are other better places to go. Was a good decision to leave Thailand.

Buddy and I stayed in a hostel in Koh Tao for almost a month during the summer of 2013. Stayed on the beach, got scuba certified, partied, the whole nine yards. We learned there were only 2 or 3 cops on the whole island, one of which worked for the ‘family’. Wasn’t super clear what that meant at the time. Several diving acquaintances reported accidentally motor biking through massive cannabis fields on the island, in the middle of the jungle areas. Armed men cornered them and let them go, as long as they left quickly. We also heard stories of beers and drinks being spiked, so we took extra care to only buy our own cans and bottles. Overall, the strip of dive shops and bars on the coast seem to be the safest place, provided you keep your nose clean and are courteous. Maybe we were just young, dumb, and super lucky.

Once I asked for help from the tourist police in Thailand. I needed to report something from a town a few hours away in a rural area. I told the police in my city that I needed help, and they told me that I needed to talk to the provincial police where it happened. I said that I was concerned the police might be friends with people involved (which I had good reason to know, but I was very polite and diplomatic about it) and asked if the tourist police could help advocate for me. The officer yelled at me for accusing the police of corruption and gave me a lecture. So nothing came of it, after I had just gotten out of 10 days in the hospital with thousands of dollars in medical bills. Still better off than the poor Burmese migrants who got framed, though. Everyone was super upset about the injustice when it all went down.

This reminds me when I was on holiday in Thailand with my family. My sister insisted going to an island (not sure which) with her then girlfriend. My mum being Thai knew of the place and kept warning them to not go, that it was extremely dangerous. They ignored this and went, the night they were there, two tourists were killed. I wondered whilst watching if it was the Hannah and David case, but we went quite a few years earlier to this. Thankfully my both were safe and returned quickly in the morning. My mum is very cautious to this day on dangers of Thailand from growing up there. Maybe overly cautious at times. But I think I would never go without her. She understands the ways there and what's safe. She even warned me not to go on a waterside at a water park. My sister convinced me too. I nearly came off half way up and then my sister sliced her foot open and had to go to hospital. The staff were unhelpful and laughed at her girlfriend who was British and had large eyes. Apparently they kept joking she looked like an owl when she was trying to get help. This is the same water park a little boy died at after being sucked into the water pump not long after. I found some Thai can sometimes be quite funny around foreigners. They regularly walked by me and my mum commenting that I looked falang (white /western / European) (I am half English). And children even called my stepdad falang kee nok (white bird 💩). Obviously as anywhere this isn't all people and there are mostly good people. Just unfortunately the bad is more noticeable.

Been living in Thailand for 30 years before moving out and this kind of crimes is literally left closed cases. Authorities protects it's citizen. Noticed how they were seemed calmed and unbothered from the crime scenes? that's becoz they are after the projection of Thailand to the world. They imnediately wrapped it up not to make it sensationalized. I was all around the islands of Thailand but avoided Koh Tao specifically. Local friends usually told me not to go alone for a trip or stay late night alone. I had been advice to always go in a group of ppl for they know the reasons why. That mafia system has been applied in all islands around the North and South and if you are just a tourist staying for a month make sure that you personally know a locals in places you're interested to visit. There were not just 4,5,6 or 10 murders happened in the island but they are many since late 1990's that even locals from other islands knew but kept mummed about it. This is the land of superficial smile but chosen by ppl who wanted a free wild life. Thailand I might say addictive but dangerous. So many victims my heart goes out to the families. They seemed so young with all their lives ahead of them. Conveniently crime scenes and autopsies didn't get done properly. This is intense. I went there around 2015? I had the most fun on this island because it was so small. One of my friends was with a girl and they went for a walk. They were stopped by a local and told not to walk into this certain area because they may not walk out. If I had of known about the deaths I would’ve been more vigilant when I was with a girl and then again by myself. All in all I did not feel in danger, but my mate said at that time he was told to turn around he didn’t feel safe. He could handle himself as well.

Nice job, Adrian! I've heard about Koh Tao from other true crime channels, but you had more info than anyone else. The family ties to the island were new to me, and that one of the family members was seen more than once before someone died in their proximity, and just happened to have been in his bar, also. I like this deep dive/format. It worked really well. I've been doing video tours of Thailand, lately, and it almost seems like one of the 'crazy' tourist places might be safer....Phu Ket, Pattaya, etc.. From video, it looks like you can't go two steps without running into a cop. Bottom line; wherever you are in the world, even your own home, be aware. Although, I think these poor victims were confronted by more than one person. The worst bully at school always seemed to have two or three sidekicks revelling in reflected reputation and willing to do his bidding for a pat on the back. The one guy (ain't even going to try spelling that name) who managed the bar doesn't look real healthy to me. Like maybe there's an addiction or a mental health problem....(psycopathy[?]) at work. Idk, but just his picture gives me bad vibes. ✌😸

Just wanted to share a little theory related to Ben Harrington's case - It's actually quite surprising how common it is in a lot of Asian countries for robberies to happen after a motorway accident, usually some of the people who first see it happen will rush over to help the victims but also take the opportunity to steal whatever valuables they can before the police or ambulance arrives. In the event his death was purely accidental, of course, it is possible that his things were stolen after the moped crash.

I worked in Thailand with lower income Thai students for 4 months, so I didn't venture to many tourist spots, but I can see how these tourist trap areas could become incredibly dangerous - you see excessive drinking and drug use by foreigners, in areas and terrain they're not familiar with, and then of course nationals who target tourist areas to take advantage of people. There are sketchy folks everywhere, and despite the fact that I've found Thai people to be some of the kindest, most patient, gracious and generous people I've ever met, these tourist areas are a big attraction for gangs, criminals and just questionable characters looking for people to use and abuse. Unfortunately sex work is all too common in these tourist islands in South East Asia (I say unfortunately as often these sex workers are under age, 14 or so). It's a beautiful area, but incredibly complex, and I think its important to know the history and current culture of the area.
@cuzz467

Well said. Too many Karen's and Ken's in the comments with selective shock as if things like this do not happen in the western world. We had a whole family of in inbreeds living in caves and killing locals in the UK and historically have had many massacres etc of innocents. As have the U.S. cases like this always bring out the "I would never go there" or "Thailand is poor" or "The Thailand people bleed tourists for money" When alot of westerners go to these places to exploit the system and enjoy the sex tourism, drugs and free pickings especially from the poorer areas. My sister works in tourism and the plethora of middle aged men travelling alone flying to these hot spots is shocking. Lots of Ken's that would slip under the radar. Period.

Given the time we live in, the lack of aptitude displayed by local authorities is clearly willful ignorance. They have an idea of who is perpetrating the crimes and they are turning a blind eye. When a high profile local is found bludgeoned to death, you'll see a completely different level of investigation and crime scene integrity. And, the "mysterious" deaths will also have a notable decrease.

They can barely keep a lid on corruption in the mainland. When the military took over a few years ago, they fired nearly all the cops in Bangkok due to how corrupt the police force was and installed military police until they rebuilt the police. The only thing that would solve this issue would be the same thing: military take over of the island, and they have other things to address right now, so its better for everyone to NOT go there.

The Thai entity we were providing services for really needed our expertise, but continually wanted the company to certify accomplishments that were clearly false. At the end of my contract the company offered me a huge bonus to stay another year. I refused. One year later the company pulled out of Thailand as doing business there was impossible without violating the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
