I skied for about 6years before trying snowboarding. I'm an expert at both at this point, splitting my seasons between both styles. I'd say snowboarding is definitely harder to learn as its less forgiving when starting out. You can push yourself further on skis since you have two edges, but I wouldn't say either is harder to master than the other.

Started snowboarding and found it easy because of my skateboard background. I tried skiing later on because at the time most people that I went with skied. Fell in love with skiing because it was more of a challenge on rails, but easier to get around on flats and control speed in trees. I fell back in love with snowboarding because more people began snowboarding. I do both now, but noticed that snowboarders hate when I am on my skis, and skiers do not mind whether I am on skis or a snowboard. My 7 year old daughter told me that I am only allowed to snowboard when I go with her and she snowboards. There are clear differences between the two sports.

Skiing itself is very different in the US vs. Europe. Skiing is almost considered as an "elite" sport like equestrian riding in Europe and there's even a "classical" style. The cultures between the two sports can clearly be observed between the most popular brands, like Moncler for skiing vs Burton for snowboarding.

I started skiing as a teenager, because I was able to borrow a pair of skis from a family friend (which gave my parents one less excuse to hold against me xD). Little over 2 years later I had to stop skiing because of a skiing injury which twisted my left knee sideways 90°, which after recovering resulted in my knee no longer being able to handle the torsional stresses. Even now 20 years later I can only ski for a couple hours before the pain comes back. But 5 years after I got injured, a friend offered to show me how to snowboard and give it a try. Turns out that when snowboarding, the old knee injury is not an issue. I picked up both skiing and snowboarding to a point where I could comfortably do turns within the first day, so i can't really say which was the most difficult to pick up. Possibly skiing is easier to pick up but harder to master like many say, but I haven't had the opportunity to improve my skiing skills so I can't really say :).

I just think people who ski are in one of these situations: 1- Never tried snowboarding 2- Tried but didn’t learn to get to that “fun” level of riding so to be good on snow stayed on skis 3- don’t see snow so much during the year 4- “too old to learn” Because I guarantee that snowboarding is much more fun and comfortable than skiing so if (for ex) someone spends a lot of time on the snow during the year, he’ll eventually switch to snowboarding Btw I love skiers and they got so more style than us snowboarders 😢😂❤❤❤

I really don’t understand all the attitude from skiers towards snowboarders sometimes lol (not everyone of course, but some). Everyone’s different and has different ideas of fun. I have runners knee on both my knees so the thought of strapping into skis and having them potentially twist my leg around like it’s laffy taffy just takes all the fun out of it for me. I just could never fully relax when I tried it bc it was always in the back of my mind. It’s definitely easier to scoot around the mountain but I actually don’t mind the walk in snowboard boots. No reason to rush and it’s good exercise. Ski boots are also horrendous compared to snowboard boots, but getting off the lift with skis will always be 100x easier. I also wasn’t lucky enough to have parents that taught me any of these sports when I was a kid! I’m 26 now and just want to progress as fast as possible and keep up with my friends. Alas, I simply have more fun snowboarding so I’ll take a couple extra falls to achieve that. Pick whatever’s more fun for you!

It took me a very long time to learn to snowboard by myself and just when I thought I was good enough, I decided to hit some steep powder and realized that I am actually very bad and I honestly kinda feel like just stopping because I dont want to just stay on groomers it was very demoralizing. You're never as good as you think you are I guess.
@BusenBingoBalthasar

But powder is also a totally different experience from groomers, the edges don't do what they usually do and everything feels a bit like it's in slow motion somehow. To me the most fun is when you have fresh snow and you can go back and forth between groomers, side hits, some trees and maybe some pow that's not too deep.

That's like me saying to snowboard gracefully takes more patience than once you learn the basics of skiing. 😅. The vast majority of snowboarders that I see, (in Austria / France) can't turn in both directions using their edges. I avoid them, because they are the ones that are more likely to fall. On the other hand, the vast majority of people on skis, ski as if they are unaware of every other person on the slope. No spacial awareness whatsoever. 😶 If I see anyone on skis, that isn't clearly a freestyle skier or an instructor, I pull off to the side.

I do both, and absolutely think snowboarding is harder --- at first. Snowboarding is so go with the flow and you don't need to constantly be managing your feet in the same way because they're strapped together. It's great, but I definitely don't think it's harder once you're over that intermediate hump. To be fair, for a while they're probaly equally as hard - weight distribution and all.. I don't even think you'd start seeing skiing as much harder until you're in heavy powder, in the park, or are at the expert areas.
