I use Pennzoil Platinum high Mileage Synthetic Oil 5W - 30. But since the 2000 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder has over 174,000 miles getting ready to turn over 175,000 miles this is the oil I use. I change it every 3000 miles. The third owner used Quaker State Full Synthetic Oil 5W - 30. I have always had good luck with Pennzoil Products. Plus I use K&N Performance Silver Oil Filter. First time using that filter. So far I like the K&N Performance Silver Filter I bought. Just thought you would like to know.

I HIGHLY reccomend a bottle of prolong at every oil change. Prolong coats and sticks to all moving engine parts better than anything out there. Research it and DIFFENITLY do a video on this product! 👍So a question Nate. I have a 2006 Ford Taurus 161,000 miles. In the past get conventional bulk oil changes at Pep Boys or a drive thru. Because of retirement & Chinese virus shutdowns, I now might drive 3,000 miles a year. No signs of burning or losing oil and I'm very hesitant to change to high mileage or synthetic blend. If this was your Dad's car, what would you tell him to do? Thanks!

my own experience with high-mileage oil was with 2004 Toyota Corolla with 183,000 miles on it. It would consume about 1/2 a quart of oil between oil changes (4,000 miles), it had no external oil leaks (e.g. valve cover gasket, head gasket). After (2) oil changes with a Valvoline high-mileage synthetic blend it stopped using oil between oil changes. I now drive a 2013 Toyota RAV4 with 124,000 miles and use full synthetic 0W-20 but not high-mileage type and oil analysis by Blackstone Labs shows no significant wear metals.

The reason for the oil consumption may have been carbon in the rings, known in the bad old days as stuck rings. The solvent properties of the synthetic oil component may have cleaned the carbon out of the rings. Another possibility is that the oil you were formerly using just flowed around the rings better than the Valvoline type you switched to. One-half quart oil consumption in 4000 miles is not consequential. There are benign reasons why the oil consumption rate could change. Keep on doing what you're doing.

High mileage oils: 1) They makes problems worse by clogging leaks that should be fixed. 2) They contain mostly seal conditioners and crude paraffin wax that swells and clogs seals. 3) Paraffin waxes are found naturally in crude petroleum based oils and are also one of the known and proven contaminates. 4) If you use a true synthetic oil right from day one, you'll never have to use anything else. 5) Not all High Mileage Oils meet the API Licensing/Testing Perimeters due to the additive packages aren't within specifications.
