I have a brass tin. For years I carry as part of my fire kit. In the tin I have char cloth, Chaga fire steel and flint. I also cut a thin piece of leather cut to shape of tin to protect the magnifying lens from scratches.

I hear a lot of people who make the same mistake as you. The magnification has nothing to do with how hot the focal point becomes the magnification determines the distance between the lens and the focal point 10x has a shorter distance than 5x. The temperature of the focal point is determined by the diameter of the lens and how small the focal point can become. Bigger lens diameter and smaller focal point give a higher temperature. The magnification can only determine how easy it is to control the focal point, 5x is easier than 10x lens to control and find the smallest point.

If you carry your char cloth in a container along with your striker and flint Etc... place a piece of soft leather over your char cloth to keep it from becoming broken into tiny pieces. Just keep track of how much char cloth you have. Out of sight out of mind. You don't want to run out. From an old buckskinner with old children now.

You could make one that was a higher power, and sell it beside those other items you've got going. Your observations are valid, and that is a constructive criticism where this item can be improved

I have one in Brass and I keep Char Cloth, Waxed Jute Twine, Steel Striker and Flint, A Cut Down Military Magnesium Fire Starter and a Brass Pencil Sharpener with large and small sharpener openings for Shaving Sticks into Tinder. I usually keep it in the outside pocket of my Pathfinder Water Bottle Cook Kit along with some Spices in some Vials that I carry in an old cellphone carrying case. In the pockets in addition to the Water Bottle Cook Kit I carry a Trangia Stove , some Wet Fire, A Fine Mesh Stainless Steel Tea Infuser, some Aluminum Tent Stakes , a Frog Gig Head, Spork, Fish Mouth Spreader, a Pair of Gloves, A Head Net and usually a Home Made Game Strap Hooked to the outside with a Swivel Bolt Snap Hook like on the ends of Dog Leashes for Carrying Wild Game I may have Taken With my Seneca Aspen PCP Pellet Rifle or a Slingshot.

I recalled my grandfather used to keep serial plates in his and never used it for tobacco because he said it used to leave a taste in the tobacco. They are not meant to be airtight because tobacco needs to breathe, or it will pop open. Tobacco is dry but still releases gases like coffee beans. The glass was removable in my grandfather's, but it's long since lost or it got funky and tossed.

Any type of analog light focusing lens type technology is extremely important especially with everything we've learned! Combining old ways and new innovations is the best thing, you can create a thermal power plant to generate electricity, heat, even air conditioning, and high voltage high amp devices, as well as make water heaters, air heaters, and food cookers+ ovens. And of course to just start fires using no fuel. This technology is essential. From semi complex sophisticated modern tech, all the way down to the most basic primitive a fresnel lens or magnifying glass. Even knowing how to use cardboard, aluminum foil, and the sun alone to boil water, cook eggs, and bake a cake off grid could save your life one day! We have to keep the old ways going and spread to more people. xD

In addition to char material you can also carry flint & steel. One can also store modern chemical tinders. The Cash company says their lens is a 6x which should be plenty powerful enough to ignite char material. Probably should have done the research before turning on the camera. What is the deal with people wearing camo clothing. Daniel Boone & Davy Crockett did not have camouflaged clothing. I never needed camouflage clothing to hunt. It looks just silly when worn in town. I just don’t get the attraction.

I've been bushcrafting or have been a woodsman all my life and I've never had one of those. Always wanted one but just never got one. I think its about time. Don't you think? Lmbo... òh and by the way, I purchest one of those trekmate alcohol cook sets you was telling about to try it out. It should be arriving today. Time to try some new things.. I've always been old, old, school so I kinda always did things the extreme old school way. I'm getting to "old" for that now since I messed up my back several years ago. Time to lighten up my load abit. Lol....

I have the nickel silver one. I've made a canvas oval piece placed in the bottom and a small canvas pouch to keep char cloth inside of it. The pouch serves to keep the magnifying glass from getting scratched as I have a ferro rod and a jigsaw blade I use to scrape the ferro rod with the back edge of it.....and a small swiss army knife in there as well.....so yeah.....basically a fire kit.

I carry one of those, I keep a flint and steel a mini bic lighter and a ferro rod in it. With the lens in the lid, all my ignition sources are in one place. I also keep some leather in the lid, that way the lens doesn't scratch. The copper ones are nice - if you clean them with alcohol then wipe them down with cold blue, that gives a great head start to building a patina and it won't show fingerprints as much.

Can someone please explain to me what makes a primitive fire starting kit better than a couple of Bic lighters to carry in hunting/hiking pack? I don't get it unless it's just wanting to do something the way it had to be done 150 years ago. Although I can see it's a good skill to have.
