I dont know when and where you lived but right now statistics says that Kazakh language becomes more predominant (quantity of ppl speaking kazakh is more than russian speakers). The service and mass media is still running by russian speakers because of the influence of rusnet and tv but in the most of the work places you ought to be fluent in kazakh and pass language exams in colleges and universities. It has been dominant to russian all the time, but russian speaker will never know it because you guys hang around only with russian speakers, and keep saying that kazakh is not spoken cuz you dont want to learn it yourself. lets be honest ok? Kazakh language is the 1st official Government language and Russian is the 2nd official Social language (to be precise) Thats just your personal point of view and not the reality. Ive got a wrong impression from how you described the Kazakhs, it seems like we live in the tents and are still nomads :D which is not true tho. We are normal modern people with iphones and facebook pages, that travel a lot to US and Europe and watch american tv series. In reality the majority of Kazakhstans population are kazakhs (70% to be exact, russians are 20% by my last check of statistics) so the big influence of russians that you are speaking all the time in your video is only your point of view and does not show the accurate picture of social situation in Kazakhstan. Because for kazakh speakers, we hardly find the necessity in speaking russian in our daily life. Also "Almaty" not "Alma ata". Only Russia calls our city Alma ata while its official name is Almaty (who knows why ask Putin :p). But please check it out first and do not mislead your viewers. I think before starting your videos you have to explain that its only your experience and it doesnt show the precise truth and support your information with statistics, may be you will learn something more about your home country. Sorry, I need to be tough and snobby for the sake of the truth. In general I am happy about your video, you should make more since info about our country is lacking in english part of internet and foreigners make up some unrealistic image of the country they dont know anything about. Good job! Thums up!

there would be no problems for u at all!Russian is widely spoken and used in Kazakhstan.Actually, it`s a predominant language in the cities, but when u go to rural areas, u better speak some Kazakh. Most of the Kazakhs speak Russian and for some of them, Russian is their mother tongue.Kazakh is our state language, but Russian is the language of the Kazakhstanis.Kazakh is getting more often used in the city life nowadays just because more and more Kazakhs from China, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and rural areas migrate to Kazakhstan and its cities. To find a job in Kazakhstan it`s often required to speak Russian and Kazakh, but in most cases, Russian is enough. Especially, in the cities. It`s also interesting that the 'public catering industry' (if i may say so) is completely Russian-speaking. Here I mean menus and waiters. Russian is not dying out.But sometimes it seems that the government wants to get rid of it, though most of their meetings run in Russian. To summarize, I want to say that if u speak Russian, you`ll be definitely understood in most of the post-USSR countries. Russian is just their legacy.

There are some people who come to Kazakhstan to see yurts - the cultural kazakh nomadic houses. But don't expect to find one easily, today the country is urban and more like europe. If you wanna experience traditional kazakh culture and beautiful nature then go to Kazakh villages instead. Actually try to visit both villages and cities to get the full understanding of what the country is like. And one more thing, actually Russian is not the first language here, it's just that local russians do not try to learn Kazakh which is such a pity after all kindness Kazakh people did for others.

30 процентов казахского начисление не знают казахский язык. И есть разница. Казахский и русский являются административными языками в стране. Конечно обо не плохо знать, но зачем заставлять всех людей его учить?

+Fargo Alex that's the thing. nobody is forcing to learn it. However, it is so ironic that Russians(government at that time, not every russian) forced everyone in USSR to speak and use russian only. I don't care how tough russian politics were towards people of ussr, but be kind and logical, if you are living in that country and you are saying that you love these people, then be respectful, show your respect and learn their language as well as culture. To me Kazakh people are so innocent and kind, sometimes they become so happy when somebody(either be russians or americans) try to learn or speak their language and culture.

Hi man! Nice video. Thanks! But let me point out some big mistakes from this video, and pls sorry for disturbing you with that )) 1) Yurts are not homes for Kazakh people any more. They were not even when you born. Today you can see them only on holidays. 2) First language is Kazakh but Russian is also widely spoken. 3) Kazakh name for Almaty id Almaty, not Alma-Ata as it used to be in SU. 4) Some pics you used in this video (people faces) are not from KZ. Moments I agree with: 1) KZ still lives in deep russian influence. 2) Our candies are really great )) But any way video seems to be very positive. Thank again!!

I was a teacher in Karaganda......there were few Kazakhs in my classes, but while the Kazakhs all spoke good English, the Russians, spoke only Russian. There were many germans, Koreans, Kirygstanis, Uzbeks, etc. but they also spoke Russian. Russia sent many people into Kazakhstan during the war to outnumber and subdue Kazakhs and in a policy to keep foreigners away from borders & even into camps....coal mines, etc. and they were not allowed to leave. It was a Russian attempt to keep Kazakh people in check. Now there is more of a Kazakh revival.

Karen Kaneshiro, that is not a precise reason. Almaty is extremely overpopulated, and due to that Almaty’s ecology suffer even now. However, government was afraid of annexation of northern Kazakhstan by Russia as there were many Russians, so government decided to move the capital.

+Bianca Teodosio kidnapping sounds so weird. but in fact they practiced this (as I read and know) like a century ago. Nowadays it is called like "stealing the girl", and they do it with her permission thou. And there are so many things behind it that I am having hard time to explain since it is very traditional stuff you know. I will try. So when couples get married bride's side do first wedding (financially supports) called "good bye" ceremony. Then groom (financially supports) second wedding. It is the actual wedding. If they asked the girl officially from her dad, then girl's parents must do first wedding. If the girl's family cannot afford it, they unofficially give their permission to "steal the girl". Then they only have one wedding which is financially supported by groom's side. I hope I explained this "kidnapping" thing according to reality nowadays in Kazakhstan))

He's not wrong, we speak Russian besides Kazakh. On top of that, our president said that we also should speak English apart from the languages I've just mentioned. So we kind of consider ourselves as polyglots :D

Thanks for the upload. Great explanation for unawared people about this wonderful country. There are so much places to come over to visit, beautiful sightseeings. People from far located countries have misconceptions about KZ due to Westen movies. I guess it depends on how open-minded person is. Certainly, I'm going to subscribe, not because you made the video about my country so I do it out of courtesy, I'm learning english and I like they way you speak it., comparing to today's controversial native english bloggers you are on another level. Peace, love and unity!

Thank you so much for spending time to type such kind of video, it's really interesting. However, I noticed some mistakes. Firstly, Urta (Юрта) is the word in Russian which means portable house for nomads. In Kazakh language it calls Agash Yu and Kiyz Yi (Ағаш үй, Kиіз үй) which means wooden and felt house. Because this the main two things. Secondly, i think you put pictures of Mongolian people.

+Joana Morgado Hi!no,especially in Astana!Astana is an administartive&business center of Kazakhstan, that's why you will hear english speech pretty often. Young generation 25-30 and under are all pretty fluent in English because we all had English in school and in university,so don't worry it'll be fine! and hope that you'll enjoy your time in Kazakhstan!

I enjoyed your video and wish there were more like it. My interest in Kazakhstan first arose out of my huge love of sports, as well as writing about them. Gennady Golovkin is one of my favorite boxers, and that is not isolated by the fact that he is one of the best boxers I've ever seen, but because of his amazing sportsmanship and good nature toward just regular people, which you speak of here as being a common cultural trait. That is so endearing. I'd love to visit someday. Are Westerners generally made to feel welcome to visit Kazakhstan? Do you know if the Kazak people follow Golovkin's career? Please forgive me the trite questions, because I have so many to ask, and some are not as simple to ask via a comment. Thanks again for the great video. Your personality is perfect for your videos. I am now subscribed. :-)

Kazakhs love visitors and tourists:) it's a cultural trait, haha. and yes, most of them do follow Golovkin's career. He's become very popular over the last few years. Feel free to ask away in messages. I live in the US but was born and raised in Kazakhstan.

@@RavenSuperstition I assumed you like in the US, but I loved learning more about Kazakhstan's culture, food, language, fashion...everything. Thank you so very much for your answer to my questions. BTW, I'm going to have a couple YT channels open in a short while, and I'd love to interview you for a video. Would you be willing? I will mention your YT Channel, of course, in several ways and put it in the description, so hopefully, some viewers will pop over and subscribe. :-) Anxious to see your new video. Have a great day.
