For babies under 1 year old, no one counts ages. Instead we count months for babies. After 1 year later, now the baby has ages depending on what years he was born. So the day when the baby become one year old is very special day which we call "돍". There is a big party for the baby at "돍", not because it is his birthday, but because he makes through the one very special year.

Hello Vicky, FYI: the "Korean age", which came from China originally, is still being used in China today.( at least by Han Chinese) When we told someone the age, We usually tell them the 虚岁(here you may understand as Korean Age) and 周岁( It could be here English Age) at the same time, in oder to avoid misunderstanding. Nowadays it's popular in China to say the birthyear instead of age. (For example, "I'm 94", that means I was born in 1994, and I'm a 90er. 90后) Anyway thank you for your this video and other videos you made for Hangul. I'm very much appreciate.

Korean Age is not counting how many birthdays you have experienced but saying which Nth year you are living now after your birth. So if your birthday is Dec. 31, the day is the first year of your life, and the new year Jan. 1 is the second year of your life so you are 2 years old in Korean age counting. This age counting system is originated from the counting method of which Nth year of King's ruling today is after his Coronation. Korean Age has no relation to your birthday but to the first day of any year Jan. 1. In Ancient dynasties like Chosen(Joseon) or Goreo, Silla, our ancestors did not use the year counting systems like B.C. or A.D. So the historian wrote historical events and the year that the event occurred as the formation "On May, 1 in the Nth year of King ~~~'s ruling ....." So this kind of year counting is usually used and this is the same method of Korean aging counting system.

I think it is basically language translation issue. I guess the term "age" means "time elapsed after a point". 20 years old means 20 years elapsed after the birth. In korean language, "20살" means more like "20 life years" because "살" means "life". It is similiar to grade 20 of a school named "life". So basically you are the same grade(not age) as someone if he was born in the same year whatever date he was born in.

Actually, there are 3 ways to say your age in korea. 1st one is the thing, you just watched in this video, that is called 세는나이(a.k.a. 한국나이 korean age). And the 2nd one is 연[年]나이(This means yearly age). This also get 1 age older after the 1st day of the new year(in solar calendar). but 1 age less than 세는나이. because this system you are 0 age when your birth. Finally the 3rd one is 만[滿]나이(The international age), which is what you guys know. Lets say you had been born in March 1st, 1993. And today is January 3rd, 2021. Then you are 29 in 세는나이(korean age), and 28 in 연나이(yearly age, which is commonly used in korean govern docs.), and 27 in international age. If today is March 3rd, 2021. Then you are 29 in 세는나이, and 28 in 연나이, and 28 in international age.

So, does Korean do a event for their birthday, or they make it at the 1st of January?
@pike_pushup
3 жыл бұрын
Actually, They do events both of them and more(Because of the difference between solar and lunar calendar). When 신정(a.k.a. 새해 or 새해 첫날, Which means 1st day of the year in solar calendar. The January 1st.) and 구정(a.k.a. 설날 Which is 1st day of the year in lunar calendar), korean celebrates the new year. *구정 a.k.a 설날 is the same day which chinese people celabrates the new year which known as 春節(춘절 in hangul, Chūnjié in mandarin). because Asian culture commonly use the lunar calendar. and that day is the 1st day of lunar year. And for birthday, Many young koreans celebrates their yearly birthday(solar calendar a.k.a. Gregorius calendar), And Older koreans or few young koreans celebrates their lunar birthday(birthday on lunar calendar).

Ok, so please don't take offense, but I work in the veterinary field, and this is somewhat similar to how we age horses. No matter what month a foal is born, on January 1st of the next year, that foal is automatically classified as a yearling...even if it's only 1 month true age. (The difference being that the foal is not automatically a yearling at birth.) This comparison is how I was able to make Korean age understandable for myself.

I think I can explain why in the traditional East Asian age system you are already 1 year old when you're born.That's because in ancient China and Korea they didn't have the concept of 0 so they started counting everything from 1.The concept of 0 originates from Mesopotamia and was introduced to China and Korea pretty late in history (around 1000 years ago, I guess?) But still I can't understand why they add their age on the new year's day, not on their birthday like the rest of the world.

If you are 20 year old in korean age(Which is 19 year old in korean official age-연나이[Yeon-Na-ee]). then you are adult. but even thou, if you have not graduated from the high school yet. then you are not allowed to buy alcohol and tobacco. Because of the law. The korean law prohibited students(except college and university students) and childs from buying and using alcohol and tobacco. And the korean official age - 연나이 - is one year less than korean age. so, its actually different from international age. So If your international age is 18 before your birthday or 19 after your birthday, then your korean official age became 19, and your korean age is 20. So you are classified as adult.

thanks a lot for explaining, but now i'm confused as to whether you guys celebrate your actual birthday? seeing as you aren't technically "ageing" during those days according to the whole korean age system.

Yes, so for us birthday isn't a day where you age +1, unless you were born in January 1st. We all age together in Jan 1st, and birthdays are just for celebrating the day we were born :)

So how does it work with legal issues? For example how is your age shown on documents such as driving licenses or passports. Is it written as your true birthdate or of the year before when you were “conceived”. How about the age of consent or age to consume alcohol. Theoretically a girl could come to the Uk where the legal age for consent is 16, they could tell a partner whose 18 that they’re 16 and have sex. The partner could go to prison because the UK only recognises your true age from birth. It’s very complicated
