It is called a scientific study because it entails a comprehensive, systematic, objective, and precise analysis of all aspects of language, particularly its nature and structure. Linguistics is concerned with both the cognitive and social aspects of language

Phonetics - the study of speech sounds in their physical aspects.
Phonology - the study of speech sounds in their cognitive aspects.
Morphology - the study of the formation of words.
Syntax - the study of the formation of sentences.
Semantics - the study of meaning.
Pragmatics - the study of language
Linguistics looks at:
The general phenomenon of human language.
Different families of languages (example: Germanic, including English, German, Dutch and Scandinavian, among others).
Specific languages (example: Arabic, Mandarin and French).
Linguistics is the scientific study of language, and its focus is the systematic investigation of the properties of particular languages as well as the characteristics of language in general.
