Thank you so much! I am having trouble understanding the theories in our Ethics class. Luckily I found this video and it really explains it in the simplest way. Thankyou so much!

Natural law is a basic understanding that reason is the groundwork for moral humanistic behavior and has at its core an element of altruism. Reason tells us that helping our fellowes brings with it a karmic correctness that assures our altruism will likely have residual benefits to ourselves, by and large making our paradigm a better place all around. Not being an overly religious person, I prefer to avoid the religious implications of natural law and focus on the obvious moral ramifications. What we are seeing take place in the world today is a corruption of the balance by the emphasis on personal gain and greed. Traits out of sync and balance with natural law and cosmic harmony evolving into a corporate collective mindset that has all but eliminated the rights of the INDIVIDUAL. We see it in the dissolution of our constitution and erosion of our natural born rights in general, so that ONLY the large money interests and banking cartels profit and the individual must bend a knee to fiscal power and force. This is accomplished through the lawmaking process and when criminals make the laws, the society is in dire duress. The problem is that corporations have no personal allegiance other than the bottom line profit margin and natural law is avoided like the plague in deference to profit. WHY? Because natural law has consequences as well as rewards. Do NO HARM and initiate no violence or detriment to our fellows. There is no room for morals in the corporate world when all decency is willingly abandoned for the almighty dollar. And so it all comes down to conscience; that nagging little gnome that urges good behavior and is a harsh punisher when ignored. Corporations escape conscience amidst the compartmentalized operating procedures that easily delegate the perpetration of sin to the peons and toadies climbing the corporate ladder. That is not to say that ALL corporations nestle in evil, but the impetus is always present.

This is incredibly helpful. Thanks a bunch for a clear and comprehensive explanation of this topic. I got a bit closer to understanding the difference between moral and ethical decisions by way of your video, but I'm still looking for someone to either explain such difference or convincingly argue that there is no such thing as a dichotomy between moral and ethical decisions. If you know of any work I could read, I would be very grateful.

Can you think of human laws that are proper extensions of the natural law? Explain how this is so

I don't see how killing a baby (to save the mother) and killing a drug lord (to save the society) are any different. Both acts involve killing someone, and both acts are done for a seemingly "good" reason: to preserve life. Indeed, in the case of killing a baby to save the mother, only one life is saved; but in the case of killing a drug lord, countless lives may be saved; so it may be argued that killing the drug lord is even more positive than killing the baby!

I disagree with you. That's 2 different context, Removing a cancerous uterus of a pregnant woman, and Killing a drug lord. We're applying the 4 principles of Double effect here. Removing the cancerous uterus attained the 4 principles of Double effect. It met the first and last principle which is "Intention must be good" (the intention is to remove the cancerous uterus, not to kill), and so on. On the other hand, the killing of a drug lord didn't meet the first principle of double effect because it's intention is to kill the drug lord, it's not good to kill. That's why it's immoral.

Drug lords (sic) don't kill anyone. Nobody is saved by that murder. A thing, a tangible object, is not good or evil in itself. Only a human action can be good or evil. The evil is in govt not allowing standards that ensure quality drugs so that they can be used properly. Nobody (adult) has a right to blame others for their own stupidity. The problem is food+drugs aren't labeled honestly so people can use as is appropriate.

Conscience in a world of several dozen millions is not the same as conscience in a world of 8 billion. Conscience is appropriate to an environment. Obviously.

Killing a drug lord is licit under "'Self Defense" in the "Just War". (by St.Augustine, teacher of St.Thomas Aquinas). Keeping this topic "hanging" is not fair, and therefore defective.

I would argue that much of what is commanded by "God" in the Old Testament involves treating others unjustly and without respect. For example, many genocides (slaughters of entire groups) are commanded by "God" in the Old Testament: Exo 23:23, Deut 7:1-2, Josh 10:40, 1 Sam 15:3; executions for minor crimes (picking up sticks on the Sabbath) and questionable crimes (having sex with consenting adults) are commanded: Num 15:32-36; Lev 20:9-16, 27; and "God" commands the routine torture and mutilation of baby boys: Gen 17:12, Lev 12:3. So it seems to me that Aquinas' moral precepts contradict his own religion!

Does the Natural Law opposes same-sex marriage? Question only.
@PHILOnotes
3 жыл бұрын
According to the 3 determinants of a human act, if we are referring "same-sex marriage", then the answer is "No". However, if we refer to the "sexual act" involved in this kind of marriage, then the answer is "Yes".
