Occlusion in hearing aids is the feeling of being blocked in your ear. It is often accompanied by the sound of an echo as if the sound is reverberating in your head. It's the feeling of being plugged up. Sound, may seem, as if when you talk your voice is inside of a barrel.
The remedy for occlusion is opening up the hearing aid by having it built with a vent. The larger the vent the less plugged up you will feel. Vent sizes are determined based on your hearing loss, and sometimes your preference or hearing aid experience comes in to the recommendation too. Hearing aids fit with earbuds can feel very open but are only appropriate for low levels of hearing loss.
Another solution to reduce occlusion is lowering the amplification given to the low pitched frequencies.
Often just putting a hearing aid in your ear makes your ear feel plugged up compared to wearing no hearing aid. Typically when you are new to a hearing aid it takes a few weeks to acclimatize to the new sound. This is normal so have patience with yourself and wear the hearing aids as much as possible.
