What Is Off Grid Retirement Like? I was able to retire at 49 ( I am 60 now) because I went off grid in a hand built cabin with no house payments and no utility bills. In this video I explain what my retirement is like and maybe give you some ideas to inspire you. My website: www.simplesolarhomesteading.com Off Grid Books and Cabin Plans: www.amazon.com/shop/solarcabin I have over 250 videos of my off grid projects and adventures for ideas: kzitem.info #retirement #offgridliving #makingmoneyonline

I live in an off-grid 10 x 20 sq ft tiny shed home and everything I have is run by solar power. The total cost was less than $5000

Most people doesn't realize the work involved in homesteading. It never stops. I know about those "projects". Hopefully I can "retire" soon. I collect social security, small VA pension plus work a full time job. I have to maintain about 20 acres. Have 5 tiny house in different development. Have to water, fertilize and prune around 60 or so mostly dwarf fruit trees (apple, pear, peach, apricot, cherry, persimmon, walnut, pomegranate, elderberry) and bushes (goji berries, blue berries, black berries, aronia berries). Keeping everything caged and fenced up from the birds, rabbits and deer. Private road maintenance and repair and storm cleanup. Also muscadine grape vines as well. And there is the raised bed garden, feeding the catfish and prime in the 1 acre pond. OMG.

Homesteading can be a lot of work and time and when I was younger I raised animals and those take a lot of care. When I retired I decided to simplify more and downsized to raised beds and just the dogs since I don't have a big family to feed. It is all up to what you want and keep in mind that as you get older or disabled you might need to keep things easier and closer to take care of yourselves.

My Wife and I have built a 10 acre off grid homested and it's 100% paid for . We both are 56 and working full time . Our off grid property is our retirement plan. Our home is paid for and will sell for around 300k when we retire .

THAT is an excellent plan and is what I have recommended to people. Downsize and simplify and you can live very comfortably and have money left for the kids if you want.

It is harder to find cheap land now. Try the land auction websites. You can still do it but it will take some time and money to get started. Buy land now even if you won't build for a few years.

I think the biggest issue with retiring early is health insurance, especially when you have health issues.

Tonka and I have found a pet-friendly assisted living facility where he can make lots of friends, being a people-pooch. I'm still checking the Western land ads. The assisted living facility is costing my entire social security check, but the rent includes three meals a day. I still have my veterans (low income, not retiree; if I had stayed in for 20 years my pension would be $27,827 per year) pension for spending money.

It is good that you have reliable living situation. It gets a lot harder to keep up with a house when you get older or disabled. I am simplifying everything to not need a lot of attention as I am getting to that point in life. Take care friend and have a great summer!

Question- how is your dry septic tank working? You made a video couple years back about it and I was wondering how it is working. Thanks
@solarcabin

Works great and never an issue with it. I empty the toilet in to it once a week and it evaporates off fast and never more than a few inches in the tank.

Hey Lamar. I have through experimentation and trial and error found a new and very easy and cheap way to compost dispose of human poop with little hassle or fuss. Using only dung beetles a shovel and a magnifying glass. And also a very cheap and easy way to harvest a ton of rainwater using 55 gallon barrels, a shovel, amd bentonite pond liner clay. Neither of which have I ever seen anyone do before.
