So, what is permaculture?
I’d say if you ask 10 different people who practice permaculture you’d probably get 10 different answers!
And although that’s a beauty and strength, it can also make it difficult for people new the concept of permaculture to get a feel of what it means and how it can be useful.
To me, it’s actually several things all-in-one!
FIRST, it’s a design method. It provides tools and techniques to design the human environment. Be it a landscape, a garden, house or your social life.
SECOND: it’s also a philosophy. Less focused on design and practical application and more on a way of being in the world.
THIRD and last: it’s a global movement! People all over the world use and interact with permaculture in their own way. Contributing, sharing, adding, learning all with the aim of making the world a beautiful, abundant, fair and inspiring place to spend a lifetime.
I'd also like to point out that it draws heavily on knowledge of many different indigenous cultures throughout the world. And, let’s be honest, that’s not always acknowledged the way it should be.
Also, there’s heaps of theoretical background, like the 12 design principles, 3 ethics, 7 domains, 5 zones etc. All very important but most of which we won’t explicitly touch on in these vids.
After playing around with this question for a while, I decided to have a go at showing what it means to us and how we apply permaculture in our little garden, located on a community garden plot in New Zealand.

• What is Permaculture?
I decided to have a go at showing what permaculture means to me and how I apply it in my little permaculture garden, located on a community garden plot in New Zealand.
I’ll do this by making short videos, showing some of the concepts and techniques that I apply. Also: plenty of failures and other brain farts vaguely connected to all of this.
Who knows, maybe someone might be inspired to look into permaculture. Maybe learn a thing or two about how you can apply some permaculture in your own garden. Or, worst case scenario nobody gives a Fuchsia and at least I tried...

Elements of Resilience is based in Aotearoa New Zealand (Te Tauihu; Top of the South Island).
We focus on growing food, permaculture principles, food forests, nursery work (New Zealand natives, edible and medicinal plants) and DIY projects. All with a strong emphasis on New Zealand-specific circumstances.
Oh, and don’t forget: sharing all the mistakes and fails we make whilst working towards a wee bit more resilience in our lives.
