The best thing about the EOS-M is what you could unlock with it using Magic Lantern/Crop Mood - 5.2K, 14-bit colour, 50fps for under $300 (in some cases under $150.) Once you used the ML/CM unlock hack, the image quality of the video you could get off this camera is fantastic - particularly if you’re looking for specific character feels straight-out-of-camera when pairing with a variety of lenses.

That’s such a minor complaint for the GFX 100 II to waste 15 on. Such a strange focus. And the claim that a professional would use Continuous high for portraits? Really? Bizarre. Making the medium format more versatile (limitations or not) is the point of the GFX 100 II, no? The video, handheld capabilities are great and will get better with the next iteration. Not perfect, but a step in the right direction.

Question: I am an avid Nikon shooter and I love that the system is opening up for more and more third party lenses with strong Viltrox presence and now also aps-c Sigma glass. However, I have a big issue with Nikon Z system not allowing to force FX mode on a DX lens. In the good old DSLR days plenty of us Nikon shooters were using the beloved 35mm 1.8 G DX lens on full frame sensors with a stronger than usual vignette, but for fraction of the cost. On the Z system the option to go FX on a DX lens is grayed out and you cannot switch it. Some of the lenses cover just a little bit more than DX format and I would love to have the ability to override the system and shoot "open gate" on something like a Viltrox 75mm 1.2 on my Z8 and get more of those edges and crop slightly less than a full 1.5 DX in post. It's a simple software limitation that could be lifted with an update but they won't do it... I was even considering giving my lens to a friend who likes to dig into the lens's software to maybe find a place where the lens itself has programmed to introduce itself to the body as a DX unit and maybe switch it to FX somehow.

Get original instead of OEM copycat. Olympus XZ-2 is the one. Ricoh just redesigned the hardware into Pentax MX-1 for hipsters, removed whole hotshoe with optional EVF.. Similar one is Casio EX-10 again with that lens coming back to Olympus XZ-1 and also reusing the same sensor. But original one is best ;) Q system had two fatal flaws. First cameras used laughable 1/2.33" sensor from entry level P&S world and system was also damaged by those "toy" lenses. The result was overpriced junk. Only late when Q7 was introduced, it moved more into higher end. But price was still stupid. When you get Olympus XZ-2 or Olympus Stylus1s, you'll have same sensor like late Pentax Q cameras, but paired with much better lens. Either that fast hi-res 28-112/1.8-2.5 in XZ-2 or brutal 28-300/2.8 in still pocketable Stylus1s, which also has own good EVF and very good AF. Having them both I see no reason to get any Q system camera now, maybe the Q7 just for collection purposes, because I have several Pentax SLRs, DSLRs and quite a lot lenses.. but years ago releasing that Q was rather a big fail. With 1/1.7" BSI CMOS right from the beginning would be better, make that 5-15/2.8-4.5 lens as nice alloy one instead of plastic and also add some travell ultrazoom for it like 5-50/3.5-5.6. Also nowdays it is quite hard to get all the three zooms in good condition on 2nd hand market and if they are mint, they cost quite a lot for being dead system accessory.

Hi guys! My first comment ever since I started watching you guys back in 2010! Thanks for the countless hours of entertainment and hugely insightful wisdom you have given all these years! Tech support directed to Jordan about the Lumix S5M2(X). In my extensive testing with an Atomos Shogun Inferno, I could not find any meaningful difference in IQ between the internal LongGOP and external ProRes 422 HQ. I was wondering: would it make sense to buy the DMW-SFU2 for my S5M2, so it will output in higher quality, and (still) record to ProRes 422 (NOT ProRes Raw of Braw)? In addition to that: does it matter for the quality of the HDMI out signal what recording settings are used? For example, does bitrate, resolution or LongGOP or All-I (in the case of the S5M2X) matter for the external recording? Thanks again!

Tech Support Question: In the Podcast you answered the question about star filters, but didn't comment on the use of a tripod on a ship. My experience has been all bad in that scenario, either the movement of the ship, or the vibration from the engines makes the shots almost unusable. Are some ship OK, or do they have vibration isolation decks? I'd hate to shoot all night and then find out every shot is shaken, not stirred. What's your recommendation?

Great show! Thanks for bringing Jim Kasson over guys. I do feel something was maybe overlooked on the GFX discussion tho. Which is the considerable improvements to autofocus. I don't care as much for CH burst speeds, but reliable autofocus could be a boon for portrait and fashion photography, on top of the other perks the camera offers like video and lower base ISO. I don't own one yet, but I've heard reviews that say it may not be up to par with the top Canon and Sony cameras, but it's still much improved and more in line with the better and more recent autofocus on other Fuji APS-C cameras. Is that enough to upgrade from a GFX 100(s)? I don't know, but the perks certainly add up for this camera and it offers a completely unique shooting experience that no medium format camera ever offered before. It certainly takes some steps to bridge the gap with the faster FF alternatives.

Until this podcast, I hadn’t heard about this. In the not too distant future, I will be looking to purchase either a X2D 100C, a GFX100 II, or a 100S. My desire to buy one of those cameras, as was mentioned in this podcast, is for all out image quality. The highest possible image quality without spending way more for a Phase one XC/XT camera. Of course, this is a little disappointing to learn as the 100 II was the front runner, mainly for its better AF than either of the other cameras. But, I don’t know if it’s ultimately a deal breaker. The X2D is the one I really want, but is hard to go for without at least continuous AF. Anyway, thanks for the knowledge. For a few months now I've been using Lumix S5IIX. It has one major issue that I was not aware of when I did my research before buying it. The issue is that no single piece of open-source software is able to work with it's raw files to this day. It's my first dedicated camera since nikon dslr's, where (at the time I tinkered with those) NEF files were universally supported everywhere. How does it happen, that the codec spec is apperently secret, but multiple commercial solutions do work with those files? Do they reverse-engineer it, and are allowed to do so? Is the spec sold to individual companies? Isn't that somewhat outrageous either way in 2023+? Would love to hear your thoughts on the topic, if you feel it's worth your time ;)

I think what would be a helpful, maybe fun, comparison would be super zooms and to regular zooms. For example, I had a 18-55 and a 50-200 XF lens. I hated the 55-200 and ended up replacing it with a Tamron 18-300mm. The convenience of having one lens takes away the stress of changing lens in the field but you give up a bit on quality. Would be cool to see professionals in photography field to test that out.

I took a bunch of gear to Alaska last summer, but ended up using that 18-300mm on my wife’s Song A6400 more than anything else. That range in that size was ideal. So much “good enough”.

@@I922sParkCir I loved my copy of that lens for fuji. It zooms far for the occasional far shots while offer a closer zoom for shots I don't have time or the environment to change lenses

Original EOS M did NOT take bad photos, come on. It had slow AF and touch-only controls, but it had the same sensor as the 60D, which was a top rated camera at the time. EOS M + 22mm was a super cool camera after they started getting clearanced out at $299 and you could set your expectations lower.

When I ran a music studio our performance videos we made were shot on a sony rx10 markii and a nikon d series, whichever one had the best video performance, and man, killer combo. That rx10ii lens constant f2.8 giving you a micro four thirds or aps-c f3 or f4 depth of field but no lens changes, and that nikon's colors and sharpness just vibed together. A Very affordable awesome video combo today. Interesting point, that drives me nuts, is all these one inch sensor cameras have dog crap lenses on em. My z90 i just parted ways with could NEVER get the nice depth of field the rx10ii did, and its really annoying because the only other way to get that in a video camera without a bunch of lenses are the shoulder cameras with the b4 mount that have the f1.8 apertures. DVX200 update with a modern good sensor and a f2.8 lens? Be the best video camera ever. Nope. sony z150 with the rx10ii lens? Nope. Sony camera built around there amazing 18-110 f4 zoom lens? Never.

Oh man! I wish you guys had asked Jim about the AI assisted auto-focus feature. That's what I'm most excited about when I think about upgrading from my GFX 100s, but now I'm concerned that Fujifilm might've set unrealistic expectations on that as well. I'm sick of throwing away 1/2 - 2/3 of my portrait photos because my 100s misses focus!!!! I spend more time in a shoot trying to make sure I'm getting focus than actually working with the model/subject--and I STILL miss focus a ton of shots! Argh! If you can ask him and report back, I would REALLY appreciate any insight he has!!! Love your show guys! :)

I think the reason why photographers are mad when cameras bring more video-centric features (and vice versa) is because "they could have used the time/resources to make the photography better" or "it would have been less expensive without all the stupid video features that no one uses" ... I love my Z8 :D

14:40 "it took me years to focus and so too did the EOS M series of cameras..." 🤣😂 Yep, pretty much. I had the original M and got back in when the M50 came out. Then Canon decided to drag a decent reasonably priced functional system through the mud and now finally abandon it. 😅 I get it but man did they handle it poorly, IMO.

Wow guys, you uncovered a big conspiracy involving Fuji. You should get a journalistic award 🥇! 😂

The GFX rant seemed so unhinged. It feels like a little footnote, “hey by the way here’s what we found”, not something to get angry about. I understand keeping companies honest, but let’s focus on actually taking photos not fixating in things like this.

Fuji with the Milli Vanilli move. Seriously, that lost them some respect with me. As someone who uses cameras as tools to make a living, I would be pretty upset if I spent that much on a camera because it has "new" features that turn out to be no better than the older model. Because let's face it, the GFX 100S isn't exactly a turd, so that read speed being faster is a pretty big selling feature for the new camera.

Wanted to do a speak pipe but doing it hear instead. *****As some new camera rumors come out with the rumored specs for the next Panasonic cameras it got me and a coworker talking shop, and the future of cameras. He made a remark about the new rode mics go pros and I jumped in with, how cool would it be to have 32 bit float in camera... and a spark went off. A conversation about what's next in cameras flowed I made the remark "this needs to be a podcast" SOOOO... What do you guys want to see put in to cameras that is not really for "image quality" but would be pulling cameras in to the next evolution of cameras.... (I still love PP professionals LMAO)

"32 bit float in camera" makes no sense whatsoever. Internally the camera measures the number of photons that make it into each photo-site by counting the resulting electrons. There are no fractional electrons. Besides, at the lowest level (±1 electron) you are talking about a detail that is almost completely noise.

No other feature can overcome the horrible focus problems that Fuji cameras have. Focus capability is a prerequisite to all other functionality.

very interesting - i have to admit i kind of assumed that Fuji was fibbing a bit with the GFX's read-out speed. the GFX 100 was already such a dramatic evolution that they don't have much more forward movement to make at the moment, besides continuing to figure out new ways to market the same fundamental technology.

Jared should admit that all Camera Manufacturers can be untruthful at times. Such as when Canon limited or throttled their EOS M and DSLR as shown by Magic Lantern, or Sony put a lot of noise reduction, or Nikon using Sony sensors...
