Hey, everyone! I'm Chante from the audience development team here at Seeker. We saw that there's some great discussion here on sickle cell anemia and wanted to share some recent news that came out about the sickle cell gene mutation being linked to a single ancestor in West Africa. @@suez3071 Hi, you posted this message almost a year ago. I hope you are feeling well and you are still able to read our message here. We understand how such a crisis feels, how painfull it can be and how life threatening a seizure can be. We managed to reduce my wifes sickle cell seizures to almost zero! A big reliefe because the seizures were getting worse and worse, leading to coma's and recovery periods untill 14 days (if recovered at all). Many times i could just check her pulse to see if she was still with me! Want to learn how we did it? Please, ask Natascha. We are from the netherlands but we have a solution for you very nearby. Also note, in many African countries, people tend to know their genotype. If you are AA, your dominant and recessive genes are normal. If you are AS, you carry a recessive sickle cell gene but your dominant expressive gene is normal. If you are SS you have sickle cell anaemia. In Nigeria, if two people who intend to get married find out they are both AS, most churches and families will discourage the union in order to avoid an SS child (even with a 25% chance of having an SS child). You grow up knowing your blood type and your genotype as much as you know your height and hair colour. I have found that this kind of knowledge is not encouraged in the western world where there isn't as much attention given to sickle cell and ways to avoid it.

I've got the sickle cell trait, not the disease itself, so I've heard many times, that my blood cells offer some sort protective measure against malaria, which I'm completely skeptical about, to be honest, I've never been to Africa, I'm black British and Congolese by descent, when my mother told me my trait, it thought I'd be dead, but in fact I feel perfectly fine like a normal person who doesn't have my sickle cell trait. I just feel sorry for those who have the full-blown disease.

There are many types of these blood diseases expressed in the phenotype of the blood. The two main ones are alpha Thalassemia and beta Thalassemia. Sickle cell is usually expressed in betas which is mainly from African decent. It’s also manifests in the Mediterranean area a lot, particularly in the island off of Sicily (can’t remember the name) where 90% of residents carry the gene. They are usually considered Cooley’s anemia and are Italian looking or white. The alpha version is the most common and is presented in South-Eastern Asian people. Chinese, like me, Vietnamese, Laos, etc.. The betas are usually missing one of two genes where the alphas have four genes that represent the severity of the disease by the number of deletional or non-deletional genes. I’m missing three, thus my severity is close to SS or Beta Thalassemia intermedia, requiring blood transfusions frequently.

I'm shocked you didn't mention the fact that sickle-cell may have evolved as an advantage : if a child gets 2 copies of the gene, they get sickle cell but 1 copy gives malaria resistance. (If you run the numbers, if both parents have 1 copy of the gene they have 25% chance of a sickle-cell kid, 25% of a "normal" kid, and a 50% chance of malaria resistance.) It's a fascinating situation and it might be something to consider before trying to remove the gene from the population completely
@grantjm05

So, “primarily” is a very dangerous generalization, and when this term is used w/o ANY context, it becomes problematic. The land-mass of the African continent is just, considerably, larger than all others, meaning there is a possibility that more malarious regions exist w/in the continent in comparison to the malarious regions across all other land-masses. However, it should be noted that, approx, 30% of all cases of sickle cell disease, globally, occur in individuals who aren’t of African descent.

I had a crisis was hospitalized and the doctor Did NOT want to give me any I.V pain meds. He was literally giving me the same shit that was prescribed to me. They gave me better drugs in the Emergency room then he was trying to give. After a day an a half I had someone bring me medication I take. When the doctor came in that day I said look. I am not a junkie and you are doing me nothing but wasting my money and causing me unnecessary pain. If these drugs worked for my pain I would be at home. And I showed him my nearly full bottles of MS Contin and Oxys. Boy when I tell you I got In that ass. There seems to be quite a bit of misconception in the comments about the relationship between sickle cell anemia & malaria. The sickle cell trait (which is just a heterozygous makeup of one copy for normal adult hemoglobin HbA & one copy for sickle hemoglobin HbS) arose in the population as a response to the evolutionary pressure exerted from malarial parasites. Presence of the sickle cell trait means an individual, genetically, has the potential for increased resistance to malarial infection, which is genetically beneficial throughout the population. The problem of sickle cell disease arises only when you have TWO individual carriers of the sickle cell trait (which, again, is beneficial by itself) coming together to procreate because now it becomes possible for their offspring to develop one copy for sickle hemoglobin, HbS, from one parent & another copy for sickle hemoglobin, HbS, from the other parent. When THIS happens, the offspring is born with sickle cell disease…

+Michael S his point went completely over your head; just stop, please!? you clearly have no idea how important, powerful, & impactful representation can be/is! and, you also seem unaware of the fact that it’s impossible for persons of color to be racist: prejudiced , maybe, but racist…absolutely not.
@michaels7562
6 жыл бұрын
lol enlighten me about how it is so impactful and more important please explain to me how black skin makes you unable to be racist???? :P :P :P I mean saying you can´t be something because of your skin color. That is fucking racist, it is the same as if you would say, that somone black can´t be intelligent (just switching from a negativ (racist) to a positiv (intelligent)). How do you know that I am not black, just for a little brain bender???
@grantjm05
6 жыл бұрын
+Michael S firstly, there’s plenty of scholarship & research available that documents/highlights the importance & impact of representation. Trace even addresses in this actual video how important it was at that time (during a very overtly racist period in American history) for a black scientist to have made such a breakthrough in research: simply because an overwhelming amount of black individuals weren’t allowed to achieve higher education, let alone flourish as professionals w/in this country. Furthermore, racism is founded upon the oppression & disenfranchisement of persons of color. Just by definition & in contradiction to the inherent structure of the institution of racism, persons of color do not stand to benefit from said institution; reverse racism is NOT a thing! Again, POC may very well be prejudiced in any number of ways but not racist. And, i made no such inference about the color of your skin. Please be blessed :)

It should also be noted that the sickle cell trait isn’t the only evolutionary example of development of innate resistance to malarial infection. There are individuals who lack expression of the Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC) & the Duffy blood group is necessary for infection with Plasmodium vivax. There are also individuals who have a deficiency with the Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme. There are also a few other examples of evolutionary development of malarial resistance.

People with sickle cell trait (AS) inherit one gene for normal hemoglobin (A) and one gene for sickle hemoglobin (S) from their parents. Because they have one (A) gene, individuals with trait do not have any medical problems, but they can pass the (S) gene to their children. People with sickle cell disease (SS) inherit two genes for sickle hemoglobin (S) from their parents. They have symptoms because their red blood cells do not make normal hemoglobin. I've got (AS) trait

Last year I dropped all my medication including hydroxyurea,it wasn't helping, I only manage my sickle cell through diet and positive thoughts and feelings and yoga practice and it has worked great no more crisis pains...how I made this work is by rising through a lot of crisis pains I strengthened my Will and have been able to manifest a life of balance, no stress/dealing with stress/self awareness= no crisis pains

Sickle Cell Anemia counters Malária Someone has stated this on another comment but i'd like to correct saying the plasmid dies during his life cycle on an infected person's blood cell and thus cant replicate This seriously impacted slavery and africans since most native and other slaves died from malaria except for part of the blacks so they were preferred by slavers No its not exclusive to black people you racists, it only so happens 25% North africans had traits and as such didn't instadie to malaria which was a HUGE problem and got to pass on genes

Conditions always getting the negative. Would be cool if conditions were to be more positive (idk like age resistance or something?).

Yeah sickle cell sucks I had it since I was born and the pain is insane, worse than surgery pain and migraines. Hopefully in the future there would be a cure for those who suffer with it.

It is strongly believed that people in Africa developed sickle cell to help with the malaria epidemic. I can't believe you didn't add that into this video.

Dont want to sound ingorant but the weather east coast in oxygen might be too cold where they are used to the warm weather like in a desert which is a safari or dessert which oxygen is hot rich or warm where the cold weather makes it so that it doesnt receive enough oxygen that causes it not to from properly (the blood cells)

MrJwyne it's definetly scary. I have the worst kind & it's not fun. I have many friends with it & I have to deal with them dying left & right from it, knowing it's most likely going to get me too.

R Smith me too. The older I get the more I realize how lucky I am. My doctor told my mother “Don’t get attached to her, she’s not going to live past her twenties” I’m 31 now. But I see death comes for all ages with Sickle Cell. And wayyy too many are dying in these hospitals due to improper care.
