i didnt really know what syn was until my violin teacher wondered if i had it (chromesthesia, if you feel like being specific) after having a loooong conversation about seeing/feeling sound through colors/shapes/sensations and 12 tone equal temperament. and im still kinda skeptical. so i think its pretty cool to hear what you see when you hear sound and your experiences too! :)

that's great that your teacher enlightened you! i definitely recommending checking out the resources i mentioned in the videos. they are all in the description. it's literally scientific. there are brain scans that proves it. it will definitely help with that skeptic voice in your head. also not a uncommon experience among synaesthete, for me i would describe it as imposter syndrome. i doubt my synaesthetic experiences sometimes. "maybe it's all in my head" but literally is LOL but if you could get access (and the money), a brain scan will eliminate these skeptics within you. :)

i'm kinda surprised that less people know about synaesthesia, because i've read a lot of books where there's been a main character with synaesthesia. reading them at the time, i didn't r e a l l y understand it, but then learning that it can be seeing colours and shapes in your minds' eye i thought - huh that happens to me, but with numbers... (not really with sounds). so i mightttt have synaesthesia, im not sure :) (also your content is very relaxing for me, it's just something really calm and sweet to watch when im sad or bored) OH WAIT i just read some of the other comments - i associate a lot of random sounds with words e.g. beanbag sounds like falling water but like REALLLLLYYY loudly (is that synaesthesia? i have NO idea :D)

I'm glad my content is soothing you! i'm not sure if that's synaesthesia, you can check out thesynesthesiatree.com to clarify! you can comment and ask, the website host will respond and tell you if your experience is synaesthetic or not!

Also we have more than 5 senses. So many types of synesthesia are still unidentified or rarely spoken about cuz ppl don’t realize those things are synesthesia. Because I have ordinal linguistic synesthesia and time-space synesthesia as well as other unnamed types. Examples: letters, numbers, days of the week, car etc all have genders for me. And also when I think about a calander I see a whole calendar belt around me

You are absolutely right! There are some of my synaesthetic experiences that are not listed too. Synaesthesia is so complex, but I figured, I should just be directing people to synaesthesia experts and neuropsychologist who can explain that better than I can. Especially the personification types of synaesthesia like OLP. I have personification of cities and towns and I completely did not realise it's a form of synaesthesia until I stumbled upon it on the synesthesia tree website. When I learned about synesthesia I only thought it was hearing a word and thinking of a color “airplane -> green” for example. I did not have that type so I didn’t really know I had it until I read that book that I mentioned. My chromesthesia is pretty different from yours because I go off of what key the song-sound is in rather than the timbre. Also the more jarring sounds have shapes. It helps me with music because it gives me perfect pitch (if I hear a note, it has a color and I can identify it). Your experience sounds pretty different from mine but I totally understand when you say you cannot really communicate it. When someone is singing and I want them to change it, I cannot really explain what that means besides “make it more blue” or something like that (this does not work and they just become confused). However, much later I learned that I subconsciously identify numbers with colors. I had already learned about synesthesia by then, but I did it so subconsciously that I didn’t notice. I only see these colors inside my mind though, not projected. This doesn’t really make a difference and it just helps me with times tables (6 times 8) is purple times deep blue, so I automatically know it is 48. The colors are mainly for numbers under 20 though so I guess it isn’t that strong.

I've always known about synesthesia and never thought I had it, BUT I recently tried talking to my friend and boyfriend about how numbers and letters have colours, personalities, and genders, they both don't have that and (jokingly) called me crazy. My friend asked me to tell the colours I saw, and I sent it, and they only continued to confirm that everyone else DEFINITELY doesn't see that. I'm curious to know if this is some type of synesthesia or something similar?

Super fascinating! I have no clue if ive got some form of this, with adhd and autism my brain is already such a mess that trying to figure out if ive got it would be like looking for a specific item in a full trashcan 😂 I do see certain sounds especially in music as "round" or "sharp" and maybe colours, but its more of a feeling, i dont see it in my minds eye. I can fully imagine this would be so tiring, or cause sensory overload! Edit after doing a tiny bit of research: OOOOOH THATS WHAT THE NUMBERS HAVING PERSONALITIES THING IS- yeah ive definitely got at least some types of it, so many objects or concepts make me feel emotions, or i have to make sure everything is "fair" to them (7×5=45 is not fair at all, for example, the 5 gets looked down on while the 7 makes me uncomfortable with his attitude)(dont get me started on 4 and her snobby personality in that equation)

Thank you so much for diving into this topic publically for us! I don't consider I have any type of synesthesia but I love music so much, singing, rapping and I produce a lot of music as well but I always associate sounds and genres to certain singularities that can be seen by everyone in a collectively range by the people, like when I make swing I can say "this feels like a elegant suit shop" or when I make hyperpop I can say "this song tastes like McDonald's sprite". Watching more about this topic through this video and your reels made me actually understand that there are people that will actually perceive any song they listen to like any of these things I'm describing and not for fun, like I do, but because they were born like that and it's just beautiful, I'm feeling extremely happy for discovering and learning more about this kind of topic, my goal is to reach as much people as I can, either synesthete or not, and see how they perceive the music I make and how would they compare it to other music they enjoy, I think my dream is growing more right now 😂🧡

But i think you made a very good distinction there where for synaesthetes, it's quite literal when we make comments like that. hahaha I think your have an amazing goal and dream! I really hope you can reach as many people as possible! As synaesthesia very subjective, different synaesthetes will tell you different things about your music as well. The possibilities are endless! Hi Zoe! So interesting to hear about synaesthesia, chroma in particular. I'm a communication designer and in my university we had a class in which we did music visualisation, which I really enjoyed. We methodically assigned parameters such as shape, colour, blur to each instrument in a song snippet. So depending on the concept we chose, music can be visualised in many ways. I don't see colors, its more a feeling that helps me decipher instruments. If you are interested about this design approach I recommend looking up the triadic ballet :)

I'm a writer, and in one of my stories (which had a lot to do with music) I wanted one of the characters to have synesthesia, but I was always worried that I wasn't describing her experience the right way because I don't have synesthesia. I've always loved music though, and I can kind of imagine what you mean when you talk about sound colors and shapes. I'm not sure if that's because I've been studying music for a long time or because I'm a very emotional person and music is not mathematical to me. It's fascinating to hear about the different ways that people understand music.

Sometimes when I say things that aren’t even related to synesthesia some of my classmates tell me to “turn it off” or try to diagnose me with something more “realistic” like hallucinations or schizophrenia, or worse, saying I’m pretending and I am being narcissistic. I tell myself that I am lucky to have discovered it at the age I did so I can plan to study it and use my synesthetic experiences for my benefit (the only reason I’m not failing math is because of my memory and the colored numbers and signs). Ok I know I am talking way too much but I have another question. Do people get kind of annoyed when you reference your condition? Because whenever I say something is a certain color or key (or both) my mom gets annoyed because she thinks I am being arrogant, snooty, and/or condescending because synesthesia is rare-ish. I know she thinks it is going to my head and is trying to prevent that, but it means I don’t really talk about that kind of stuff around her or other people. I don’t want to come off as snooty or condescending or the other things. (That is probably why I am talking so much now because you and people here have it too lolll). We gotta be smart about how to tell if someone is lying on the internet or not. Although I think synaesthesia looks like it's easy to fake, but totally not. Someone could get busted pretty easily due to how complex it is. haha

Yeap :) They stay pretty much consistent. They wont be 100% the same all the time with chromesthesia because they are moving around a lot, but for other forms like Grapheme-colour where alphabets and words have colours, they do stay pretty consistent.

I'm suspecting I might have developed synaesthesia to some degree. As I grow older I feel like my sense, specially sound related are more keen and precise, I hear more, but it also has a tactile and painful component that grows. It really started when I started to use earplugs to isolate myself from a problematic neighbour playing music 18 hours a day in his appartment (and not the un hours, you know, from 7 pm to lunch the next day every days). I put earplugs to get away. Side note I'm also on the autism spectrum, so my senses were always exceptionnal from the start. Now I get those tactiles feelings with sound, specially deep beat from music. Those are downright physical torture to me. Also sounds like rock breaking in a campfire hurt like large glass shards being plunged in my brain. Every time there is noise I have either pain or tactile impressions accompanying it and it seems to become more invasive and bleedthrough more as time goes on. Does it make sense in the context of synaesthesia?

Are you able to you self diagnose? I always thought you need to go to a doctor but I guess it’s hard to tell with this. I also see colors and shapes in music, lots of bubble shapes in people’s voices, and sometimes I smell emotion. I found out when my friend told me ‘sadness’ does not have a smell and it kind of went from there I guess.

yes, most synaesthetes are self diagnosed due to the inaccessibility to get a formal diagnosis. (the only sure fire way now is an expensive brain scan that isn't readily available) there are also medical professionals who has failed them countless time and self diagnosis is the only way. for example doctors not knowing what synaesthesia is, misconceptions, etc. actually had a whole podcast episode with Maike talking about this. you can check it out if you want! as long as you do it for you, to improve your mental health, and not spread misinformation, i think its completely valid to have a self diagnosis.

One question, do you get those reactions to sounds with your own voice? Like if you hear a song you see purple but if you sang that song, would it still be purple or would it be a different color?
@zoesthesia
5 ай бұрын
It will be different. So for me, my own speaking voice I don't see anything, but my singing voice is purple round and glittery. So if I listen to a song that's blue, but the singer's voice is pink, when I sing it, the song will still be blue (if i use the same backing track) but then my purple will be mixed into it, and not the pink anymore. Does that make sense? My sound to colour form works with the timbre of sounds. So if the timbre changes, e.g. different voice, it changes too. It changes too if I listen to a song on different types of speakers. Maybe the colour will stay the same, but the texture will change, or even the shape.

im not sure if this is synaesthia, but when i hear music, or just a sound [sometimes talking], or like reading something [sometimes. counting it cause my aphantaisia only takes effect after i move on from a description of where the characters are] i imagine a animation. if someone else made one for that audio then i might think of their animation but it is usually an animation. depending on the song, the animation style and fps changes. it can also change over time. like, for example if i heard nasty majesty [off the hook] like a year ago, i would think of the trailer for Octo Expansion. Now, if i listen to it, i think of that same trailer, but with Inanimate Insanity characters. Probably because i think about that way more idk

You can test yourself on consistency and it being involuntary. Synaesthesia ARE associations. Some stronger than others. For example is the letter A always red? Or is your sibling's voice always blue? Can you choose when where how and what you see when it does get triggered? And if you're able, you can join a research project and get a fMRI brain scan. That's the only sure fire way to confirm your synaesthesia atm. :)

It's called aura synaesthesia (projective personality-colour synaesthesia) where we associate people with colours (I THINK). I have that too and I see it kind of like filter over the person. But depending on the person, it can have shape and movement and has it's on placement around them. Sometimes in front of their chest, or coming out of their head or something like that. It changes when that person experiences something very traumatic, otherwise it's fairly stable. You can read more about it here: www.thesynesthesiatree.com/2021/02/aura-synesthesia-projective-personality.html hope this helps! :)

This is the first time I hear about synesthesia actually and I felt like something clicked if it makes sense.. I am not sure and of course I might be wrong, but the people around me all have auras not certain shapes but just a taste and colour maybe a certain feeling to them if it makes sense, I don't know I'm trying my best to find words to it honestly Multiple times, I happen to know them from far away or from their back due to that certain feeling.. Not only people but music, for example I happen to hate loud ones with multiple loud instruments because they make everything chaotic when I listen to them, they feel painful for me Meanwhile, calm ones, soft ones make it easier for me to breath, I feel like they speak in a certain sequence of taste and feelings and I enjoy them Even colours have a certain feeling to them if it makes sense There's no certain shapes though or one certain colour It sounds a lot different from your experience but it seems there are many types so I wanted to ask Is that something related to synesthesia?

Actually, I've known about synesthesia for a while ( because I like deep diving into the rabbit hole of weird human conditions like weird allergies, interesting phobias etc. haha ) but I when I learn about it I was like, "Nah, couldn't be me, I'm a boring normie lol." Because I'm not sure if I needed to be medically diagnosed for this, but I do remember in my teen years I struggled to read teen magazines like seventeen because it felt so loud and messy. I kinda avoid those colourful magazines/comics and I read a lot of newspapers and any black and white reading materials (read: mostly manga, lmao). Up until in my twenties that I noticed there's something just popped up when I hear certain sounds (mostly voices) that I started to pay attention. I catalouge whatever I hear a sound/voice and what I associated it with, a constant thing. So that I know it wasn't just a one time feeling. I think that's how I come to terms that I might have a form of synesthesia. And here I am! I do enjoy the content here and reading others experience. I learn a lot from you and other people here. Off to a colourful adventure!! 🎉

I understand how you're feeling at the moment, because that was me for awhile even after finding out I have synaesthesia. I thought it's normal people have colours, and music has colours and shapes. However, I definitely do not think of numbers as soft or hard, and numbers have no colours for me as well. I'm not sure what are the feelings you have attached to people or words, but that's another job we have as synaesthetes. Which is to find the line between what is synaesthesia and what is normal. it is tough, i am still trying to figure it out as well. Somethings I'm sure of, but others I'm not. How we experience synaesthesia is also on a spectrum, it ranges from a "knowing" to it being projected outside of our mind's eye physically. So you may not see SEE it, but that doesn't mean you don't have synaesthesia. I can't really confirm your synaesthesia for you unfortunately, that's something you have dig around for yourself because you are the expert of your own experience. But I have resources in the description and podcasts where my friend Maike interviews synaesthesia experts and researchers about it. Learning what synaesthesia is, can help you define what isn't. Speaking to other syanesthetes and swapping experiences can help define your synaesthesia better as well. Hope those can help you clarify your own experiences :)
