Two spray guns here. Binks 7 and Devilbiss Mgb, since 1982. Either would do for everything but I have two in case I drop one in the middle of a paint job. It can happen. I think the key to success is recognizing changing conditions and making constant adjustments while spraying. I used one booth that had such a weird air flow speed deviation around the room that the gun had to be adjusted for each side of the car.

This is the first video I have seen from Pete. He is absolutely right on with gun choices and funny as shit! I bought my first Binks #7 in 1978 and have literally shot thousands of gallons of lacquers stains and every paint known to man with it. I still use it and it works as good as it did brand new. I have had to change the needle and nozzle several times just because of the volume of paint I spray with it but as long as you clean it when you're finished with it you can pick it up and it will work perfect every time.

Personally I do like to play around with different spray guns. I only owned 1 gun for almost 4 years and got great results with it. Collecting and borrowing guns is more of just a hobby than anything, a hobby that’s a lot less vain and expensive than driving fancy cars or going on lavish vacations. It is pretty useless but I really enjoy the challenge of using a gun or paint system that I’m not used to, it keeps me on my toes and keeps painting fun. I know im a total nerd, oh well.

My first "Cadillac" was a Bink 7. I don't know of needles or cap, then I went to a Vocacional School. I have to set everything with that only gun, and a campbell 25 gallon compressor, with a toilet paper air filter.If you paint something with a spray can, you can Not adjust the pressure , or the fluid, you have to control, to achieve the results.You are right. I used a Snap-On spray gun that was made by Sharpe that I bought when I started going to tech school for auto-body back in 89 and it was still working like new when it was stolen 4 years ago. It just had a perfect feel to it for me and even one of my old bosses preferred how it felt and sprayed over his Binks guns. I only had that one gun for all those years and cleaned it inside and out every time I finished with it. Was it a better quality gun than all others? NO… it just felt it had better fit and balance to me. It’s an individuals personal preference what gun they use. Pete hit it right on the head. A cheap gun can work as well as an expensive one if adjusted right. Go with what feels right to you, and don’t fall into the false belief that each product needs to have a certain gun that is used only for that product.

Thanks: Pete for setting me straight. I had a retired aircraft re finisher friend give me a Devilbiss spray gun 40 years ago, he used to spray every finish in the aviation industry. I decided to put a new set of fenders on my 2004 dodge and paint them myself. I started to fall into the HVLP trap with the nozzles and cups, that I knew nothing about. I took a chance, and used the old gun I was taught with, and I could not believe the quality of the finish that gun laid down, in fact I think it was very forgiving in some cases. New is not always better. Only wish I could go back and buy a new truck of that era with the price tag to match. Cheer's Canada

The 30 year old #1 complained the Iwata was too heavy, 30 year old #2 said the other gave him a blister, manager said it saved them 20% in paint as they throw away the $38 tip, then finished by saying “After a couple of weeks, just throw away the gun and get another”. Now that is saving big money in paint buy throwing the gun away. That is smart! How come I never thought of that! Now, that is brain washed. Pete - Thanks for great video! I'm new to this and just starting to paint with a gun. Could you please do a video on what size tips are preferable and why for different types of paint, epoxy primer, bases, clears? Or do you have to thin your materials to make them work with a particular tip?
@karsbkool
2 жыл бұрын
I'm not Pete, but I'm sure he would say that the tip size is not as important as the knowledge of how to adjust the gun for the conditions you will be spraying under, and your willingness to adapt to those situations. I personally will tell you that these experts that show you how to open the fluid needle all the way to get the "correct" adjustment are "quacks". Wide open throttle is not the only way to operate a spray gun. Once in the nineties when my primary spray gun was down, I used my Nesco 868 lvlp primer gun with a 1.8 tip for everything. Did I have the fluid wide open? No. Did I run that lvlp gun at 40psi for clearcoat? Absolutely! You're the painter; you make the gun work for you.

Seems like all my old guns crapped out all at once....I think they all need new needles....I bought the Black Widow HTE from Harbor Freight with a coupon about a week ago...Could not be more happy...Serious a great gun for $189...Even feels good in your hand

This dudes a trip I love it, I run 3 spray booths at work and am sometimes painting 6 or more jobs at the same time so I require multiple guns but for the home gamer you just need a primer gun and a topcoat gun

My grandad bought a Binks model 7 in 1946 after WWII, I still have it and have sprayed a lot of surfaces with it. I switched to SATA in 1994 and have not looked back I spray every day and buy a new gun every 4 or 5 years just to get the newest or latest I do like the gravity guns better than the siphon feed cause whatever you put in the cup will spray.

I have 35 spray guns & I love them, I don't have time to actually use them as i am too busy looking up the data sheets as to what adjustments & pressures & mixes to spray & paints to spray. But boy when i get through all this data I am going to be a good painter...

You are correct, if you know how to paint a car, you can make pretty much any gun work. Issue is that it depends on what type of shop you work at. Working for a high production shop, I absolutely need a shit load of guns. Not because I'm a greedy piece of shit, it's because I can be spraying up to 4-5 different colors at once. Always have separate clear guns, as well. Don't have time to break down my guns during the day. So basically I have 2 primer guys, one is a back up. 2 sealer guns, one is a back up, 4 base guns and 2 clear guns and yeah one is a back up. Not showing off, time is money. Guns need to work everytime I pick them up.
