Ya I was stationed at MCBH and not only is it the best Marine base, it's probably one of the nicest us bases in the world. Has one of the best beaches on Oahu to itself Pyramid rock, you can rent a boat on base and go party on the K Bay sandbar, top notch golf course overlooking the ocean, Very nice E club, free shuttles to and from Waikiki on the weekends. My favorite duty was a med cruise out of Lejeune. We hit a new port about every 6-10 days. Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca, Cannes, Nice, Monaco plus Sicily, Sardinia and Rome. Gibraltar, Port Said in Egypt, Cyprus and Malta. Of course we had to pull duty in Beirut for 30 days with another 20 days in Naples. As an NCO when in port I volunteered for shore patrol. That way I got to go ashore even on my duty day.

How could you forget 29 Palms? 29 Palms is universally despised by anybody that’s participated in ITX, CAX or Mojave Viper, however, I’ve never met anybody stationed there that didn’t love it. Camaraderie is super tight, facility’s, activities and amenities are excellent. SoCal and Vegas are close, and the guns, dirt bike and off roading scenes are unparalleled. I’ve never been stationed there, but have been to 29 many times (I’m a retired Comm guy), and know tons of folks who loved it. In fact, a friend that just got orders to 29 from Pendleton and him and his wife are psyched! It’s a cool spot where you will genuinely feel like a Marine if you’re stationed there.

Not much to do on base and town was 5 or 6 miles from our barracks(very few marines had cars). On Fridays you could catch an express bus to the USO in Hollywood for $5 returning Sunday. USO had free beds and showers. Made for a fun weekend. Base pay for a PFC then was $277 a month. I got about $100 each payday.
