Yet another solid video, Adam! You've mentioned this point a few times in other videos but I think it didn't get stress in this one: Time/Commitment. As you know well, when well cared for a lot of animals have long lifespans. I've seen so many people taken on pets without considering how long they live. It's odd to think that my mammals (cats and dogs, 13 to 15 y/o) are some my shortest lived pets.

I think another thing to consider I are emergencies in general. One reason I don’t want animals that are difficult to handle is that I live somewhere I may need to evacuate due to fires. when I was 14 in 1998 I got my first iguana, he got huge. i'v had monitors, tegus and water dragons . In 2008 my daughter was born and I gave all my lizards away. after 15 years my ex left and I had the house to myself. I knew from my past that if i was going to get back into lizards I only wanted agamids. I found a water dragon on craigslist it looked like it was dying .the people who had her said they had her for 3 years . she's the size of a baby. I can't exlpain how happy it made me to take care of her. I got another water dragon and a sailfin dragon. they have a huge space in my garage with a t5 and a window with sunligh.t I put a rubber screen in front of the window so they won't rub there frace I have basking lights everywere. I have a lemon tree , avacado tree ,kiwi vine and a blueberry bush for them to climb on. it feels's like the tropics in threre. They have 8 feet of water. They are the perfect reptiles for me. They brought so much happiness to my life when I needed it most. I swear they mean more to me than silver and gold..

Our Dumerils hasn't been pooping much this year. So I took him to the vet. X-rays, blood work, 3 enemas, soaking in a tub, etc - $720 (US). And a check up in two weeks for even more $. Some vets don't want to deal with a 7 1/2 foot snake. Years ago we lost heat in January - power was knocked out which put our gas furnace off line. So I put our Dumerils in a pillowcase, put him on my lap, and then wrapped myself in a sleeping bag for the night.

UVB / UV A-B bulbs are relatively inexpensive and range from $25. - $40. each (depending on the brand/wattage) here in NYC. Online - and outside Manhattan they’re less expensive. One doesn’t need an expensive UV meter if you change the bulbs regularly every 6 - 8 months and keep accurate track. The bulbs and fixtures are usually cheaper at “big box” pet stores like PetCo & Pet Smart, etc. and are virtually always in stock.

I checked to make sure there was at least one accessible vet with experience treating reptiles before I even considered going any further with deciding which one I'd want. There are a few. If it weren't for some fairly restrictive state laws regarding keeping any native species, I'd have looked for one of the several colubrid species from the area since the climate in the enclosure would have been almost a no-brainer. The reptile enclosure will be in my room. That means I don't want the necessary enclosure climate seriously fighting with what I maintain for myself. I have room for a reasonably decent sized enclosure 4 feet long 3-4 feet deep and as tall as needed. If I wanted to fight the room climate, I could house an arboreal snake without much issue. As it is, we get back to the oft mentioned Dumeril's boa. While not the only reptile I'd like or hope to keep at some point, given my current situation, that's the best snake for me taking into account the other criteria. Besides, they are really neat snakes.

I love that you took the time to really dig deep and talk about all the little things that pop up when it comes to reptiles. I was a little the same when I first got into reptiles. I knew I wanted a lizard, and flip-flopped between leopard gecko or bearded dragon for a month. And because I lived with roommates and only had the space on top of my dresser to house whatever reptile I decided on, I went with leopard gecko. Then, once I got my own place 1 gecko turned into 3 and I got a shelving unit to put their tanks on. Then I decided I wanted a snake. So I asked around on different snake and reptile groups on a good starter snake and of course got ball pythons and cornsnakes as answers. I didn't want to "settle" for a "basic" snake that everyone and their brother had. So, just like you mentioned, I came up with a list. Top spot was a bullsnake. Unfortunately, they aren't very popular in my state, and there weren't any at our local reptile expo. So went to my #2 pick, which was a Mexican Black Kingsnake. Again, not a lot of local breeders. So now I was down to my #3 which was a ball python. Which, no surprise, half (if not more) of the expo was full of ball pythons of every color and pattern morph you could think of. Found one that I absolutely fell in love with and brought him home. Now I have 2 balls, 2 bulls, a Cali King, AND... a cornsnake. Yup. I found a cornsnake I fell in love with and got him. lol.

I want something that's: Handleable, smallish 3-5 feet, something that looks really cool (in my opinion), and doesn't need a lot of large prey, and doesn't need high humidity or heat, or extreme cold. I'm not really looking into aquatics right now though. What I have my eyes set on right now: Mexican black king snake, western hognose (sable), tricolor hognose, and I'm thinking about terrestrial geckos (mainly looking at fat tails, but haven't made up my mind) My thing is that I need to look into where I can get all the stuff for the snake, and where I can get the actual reptile, since I really don't want to go to petsmart or Petco for this kind of thing. Right now, I'm definitely going to need to save up, but I'm not going to get any of this right now, I'm saving up for something else.

If people want something they never touch or interact with, surely a Tokay gecko is the best choice. Don’t need a huge enclosure, relatively simple care requirements. You just have to be aware that they’ll have your hands at the first given opportunity.

So have you ever looked into Gargoyle geckos, or do you lump them in with cresties most of the time on your vids? (I say lump them in, on account of them having nearly identical needs, aside from being unable to cohabitate with each other for the beginning keeper.)

Great video!! Can I get some more advice from you? My hubbs and I are looking into getting a salifin within the next year or so, and we were going to make it a paludarium (?) with archer fish. Do you think the archer fish and the dragon would be able to be in the same enclosure?

I actually found a vet that I walked in and walked out with a visit , fecal, and worm medication for my Beared dragon for 100 bucks. But before that I was paying 200 just to get seen.

I guess I'm weird for a reptile guy. I don't care about colors or morphs. What I want is a pet that will be my buddy and actually interact with me instead of just using me as a warm place to sit for a few hours. Basically medium sized dog with scales is what I want. Tegu might be a good fit but the fact that they can drop their tails _freaks me out._

Rainbow boas should require a permit to own, honestly. You mess up their humidity just once, for just a few days, and it can kill them. Where I live in the desert, even the super experienced herp guys and breeders don't bother trying with them. Yeah you can technically do it, but it's so much work, it just stops being fun. Rosy boas, on the other hand, are awesome. And easy to keep healthy. And the melanistic ones look cool af. I get way more compliments on my rosy than I ever did with my retic (when he was small enough that I could take him out) or my ball python. They're small, but they just have this _presence._ People notice them. And they're rarer, while literally everyone knows what a rainbow boa or red tailed boa or boa constrictor is. So it's cool having a snake that not everyone knows about.

Hey is there a company that can take care of your reptiles when you are away like on vacation or for an extended period. I couldn't think of any but it seemed like a cool idea.
