I've had a Z8. BMW asked me if they could loan my car for the unveiling of the new Z4. They had a line up in the showroom of a Z3, Z4, the new Z4 and the Z8. It was a plan that back fired massively. People came in, saw the Z8 and made a beeline for it, ignoring the new Z4 totally!😄 Beautiful car, like no other BMW. The interior was 99% unique, with only the heated seat buttons coming from the 7 series.

Gorgeous car. I'm not generally a fan of BMWs but I've always loved these. So much so that I have several diecast models of it! I've seen one in person once when I was on holiday in Germany - it's certainly a rare beast. I do wonder if Fisker - assuming he did the interior as well as the exterior - took some inspiration from 1990s Fiat group cars. The dashboard shares cues with the coupé Fiat (body colour panel and push button starter) which of course Bangle did the exterior of, and the Lancia Y (central instrument pod). Regardless, I agree that as a whole the Z8 has aged well. It could star in a new Bond film tomorrow and the man on the street would still think it some new offering from Munich (modest kidney grills aside!). I also think this car must have served as inspiration for the Weismann Roadster. Excellent film Jonny. And thanks again to Tony for facilitating it.

Pointless fact Ronan Keeting had one of these when they were new used to see him out and about in it. Always thought they looked awful at the time but now it’s clear to see what they were doing with this lovely retro style convertible. Also when new they looked over sized and ungainly but in today’s world of bloated SUV’s styled on Hippopotamus it looks quite dinky. Good to see this review ...

This came out when I was 12 years old. At that age I regularly visited various automotive websites to see what was up and play with the configurators; I remember visiting bmwusa and seeing this dropped. MOM MOM LOOK AT THIS MOM IT LOOKS SO COOL WOW $128,000 THAT'S A LOT WOW. I wasn't a BMW fan per se, Porsches were my main focus at the time, but this thing absolutely put stars in my eyes when I was little. Even though I've grown to realize this is probably too overt of a car for me to want to own (an academic point as I can't afford one anytime soon), this car will always have that childlike wonder of _just wow. Look at that, it's stunning, and I'm happy it exists_

Not sure when I could drive that car - probably around 2005 a z8 was on sale here south of Munich by a BMW car dealership. My buddy and me in dark suits were on the rare way to a casino so the sales man gave it to us for a testride in the mountains. The pricetag were 104K Euros and we got the offer on a 2% discount when pay cash. For myself the car was to heavy for a sportscar....more a cruiser. Well back then I was 20 years younger so another car at the dealership got more „should buy“ points. A dark green BMW M3 e36 with a carbon roof light weight edition. Probably a car what would have doubled or trippled its value today also. Still today my small BMW collection is more low profile and ordinary but valuable cars make me nervous.

I remember that, nearer the time, the Z8 was judged to be in an identity crisis; it's V8 and manual, but it's heavy (for the time) at around 1600kg for a compact two-seater. Is it a true sports car or just a boulevard peacock? The number of film stars and celebs swanning around in them make it seem like a statement car rather than a helmswright's missile, and I think Alpina's choices came down to them embracing that side of it wholeheartedly and making it a straight cruiser. I've always liked the way they look (and always cringed as a child at its final scene in TWiNE!!), but I've never really seen myself in one.

I have to disagree with Johnny that there weren't really retro cars before this came out, more like this came out in the middle of the 90s/00s retro crazy; yeah the Fiat 500 and BMW Mini came after but the Plymouth Prowler, PT Cruiser, VW New Beetle, the Jag S-type aping a Mk.II, arguably the Dodge Viper, and others I'm sure were already on the market. Retro Thunderbird, Mustang, Camaro, etc. all came after but overall would have to say the Z8 came in the thick of the retro design craze. And one of the best executed no doubt!

The interior is truly brilliant though in terms of it's total uniqueness. I find it unresolved as a design a bit but with the roof down it is striking.
