Hey everyone my name is Masud and in today’s video I’m going to briefly attempt at answering what the difference is between a physical therapist and a physiotherapist.
Both terms are used interchangeably a lot but from my understanding a physical therapist is more of a term used in the US and perhaps other parts of the world.
I know that in the US the physio qualification isn’t a typical 3 year bachelors degree to start practicing. You usually have to complete a 3 year doctorate degree after having done a bachelors already which is another 2-3 years, hopefully I’ve got that correct
In the U.K. a physio is usually called a ‘physiotherapist’ and just to add the term ‘physiotherapist’ is protected in the U.K. and Northern Ireland by the hcpc. Therefore you have to pass the physio degree to be able to call yourself one.
In other places like the Republic of Ireland I believe you can call yourself a physical therapist legally without having done any certified qualification.
So I guess this leaves people who are after a qualified physios at a disadvantage.
I think there should be more guidance around this but hopefully this video has helped you to understand the key difference.
Thanks for watching!
