Melda develops a treasure trove of plugins! They’re a little overwhelming at times, but if you don’t want to go too in-depth, they’re easy enough to use. However, if you want to deep-dive, they’re almost unparalleled in the customization capabilities. These plugins should be as ubiquitous as fabfilter, Arturia, or iZotope, because Melda really has an impressive collection of plugins! One of my favorite developers for sure! Your series of videos showing the differences between the different types of processors is awesome! Not a lot of Melda content on KZitem (that aren’t like 10 years old), so thank you for these videos!

I've had the Melda Total FX Bundle for years now and every time I try to use it I get overwhelmed and have too many questions. The preset names are really unhelpful. The biggest conundrum is what detection level are the compressor presets set at and why? They seem to over compress from the get go and I'm not sure how to get the best response from them. Do I ease back on the compression or do I reduce the input level, which isn't that hot on my gain gain staging. Thank you for doing all these videos because Vojtech needed help with this as the early efforts weren't as easy to follow. Saying that, he must never sleep and always answered my inane questions when I emailed, great developer.

Thank you for watching. Depending on the plugin you can do either. I'd personally try to decrease the input first, but try both and see which sounds better.

I have MturboComp LE version and it is my most used compressor for now. Sometimes I think - why not to upgrade to a full version? But then I see all those controls and become scared 😅 Unfortunately I can’t use Le version in mXXX (also LE😄), so maybe one day I’ll get an upgrade. But an awesome comp, really.

@@Chandlerguitar thank you. There are not a lot of videos with melda plugins, and they are so versatile and functional, that I’m afraid I’m using like 3% of what they can do. Being not even aware of most of functionality 😅 So your videos are very valuable.

I have Turbocomp LE, so I can really see what the knobs are doing under the hood. Could you explain the Compression Knob a little more? Or perhaps point me to a more detailed discussion. The help in the plug-in isn't quite enough. It seems to have both positive and negative number going up to 100. What does the negative side do vs. the positive side? Also, are the high and low pass filters always active whether you're using an internal or external sidechain? Similarly, what does the percentage slider do on the detector frequency section? You've got the knob that goes from -24 to +24, the frequency slider and then a percentage.

I'm not at my computer right now, so I can't say for sure, but I beleive the compression knob is a bit different in each model. Generally it acts like a temporary gain knob though and turn up the input gain without effecting the output. Some of the models are slightly different, but I think most work like that. I wouldn't worry about the positive or negative as it isn't important. Just set it according to the amount of gain you want reduced. I'm pretty sure the HP and LP filters are off at the end of their ranges. The percentage slider is a gain of a peak filter in the sidechain. I hope that helps.
@jakelondon

@@Chandlerguitar I figured out that the percentage on the peak filter is the q value of the filter. But I'm still confused about the compression knob. I'll mess with it more in light of your comments, but if you happen to be in front of the computer and get a chance to dig in a little and add any additional thoughts, that would be awesome. It seems important, and the explanation in the help section kind of assumes a lot of knowledge that not everybody necessarily has. With these LE plug-ins, it would be so cool if the edit screen was available in read-only mode. I have the full version of the Limiter X plugin and it's helpful to mess with the simply interface and then go into the edit screen and see how turning on knob on the simple interface affected the parameters on the edit screen. I'm fine not having the ability to drill down and edit the parameters (I didn't pay for that). But it would be useful to be able to see how moving buttons on the simple interfaces affects the parameters in edit view. But maybe that only seems helpful to me, because I have full versions of other Melda plug-ins, so understand that interface a bit more already. If Melda was using the same UI metaphors as everybody else, these simple interfaces would be quite cool. But when a compressor has no ratio control or the attack and release is expressed as a percentage and not in milliseconds, it feels like some extra explanation would be helpful to orient people who are accustomed to something else. Anyway, thanks for fighting the good fight to make these plug-ins more legible to the average user!

So MModern's Auto-compression feature shines when I have a specific number in mind for how much dynamic range reduction I want? Hmm. I bought it years ago because the idea of a compressor that could set its own parameters was intriguing. Sadly I have never found a practical use for that feature, which unfortunately eats up a full third of the UI. I spent some time and effort on it too, and then discovered that even after I got the gist of slider and the knob and the histogram and all that, the automatic settings it came up with were consistently useless. I'd much rather have that space devoted to the precision meter that MCompressor has. All is not futility, however. The one place where MModernCompressor dusts the rest of the Meldaproduction line is that "Mode" control just below the Attack and Release knobs. It's a front-facing selector for 5 different settings for the detector, including the interesting and useful "Psycho-acoustic" filter. MDynamics has that, it but it's buried two panels deep which makes it kind of a pain in the ass to access and easy to miss unless you're desperately trying to get your money's worth from a plug-in that you paid for. MModernCompressor also has a Dry/Wet knob, which MCompressor lacks, so MModernCompressor can do parallel compression without having to put it on a bus. MModern has a full 5-band MEQualizer-style EQ for filtering its sidechain, too, so you can really zero in on what you want the compressor to be triggered by. What can I say? Unlike most people who own a license for it, I didn't get it as part of a bundle along with its big brother MDynamics, so it was the best compressor I had for a couple of years. It's the Rodney Dangerfield of the Meldaproduction line, it gets no respect. I've only ever heard of a single person other than me using it except just to try it out, and he does so because I talked up the fancy detector switch on the official forum. It's a secret weapon.🙂

I'm loving the MTurboComp. Very analogy. Question though. When i load the plugin up it's compressing about -10 of gain reduction by default, even before i press any buttons. Even when i turn the Compression knob down to 0% i'm still getting gain reduction. Is there some sorta setting that's making it drive hard by default? Like a 'Maximize To 0db' or something? I can't find that setting anywhere. Or does the input just run hot by nature on this plugin? Edit: Btw, before you ask, the level of the source material isn't that high, it's not like it's a very loud source that's making the compressor work hard. It's a reasonable volume for drum buss

I believe it just runs hot. I usually end up turning down the input a little whenever I start and then adjust from there.

MTurbocomp is a more traditional compressor and isn't going to have as many bands. Even at the lowest settings I don't think MSD would have as few bands as MTCMB. This will make them sound different and MTCMB will have better saturation. On top of that MTCMB will have things like Mid-side processing and other types of band splits that MSD doesn't have. I hope that helps.
