+Kama Jiu Jitsu, I met a one stripe purple belt from another academy last month while I was out and about town. I had a BJJ shirt on and he asked how long I've been training. I said, "6 years." We talked for a bit, and next he asked my rank, so I told him, "4 stripe blue belt". This guy was in disbelief, and I could see he instantly lost respect for me. His tone changed from one of respect to a condescending one as he said, "I've been training 2 years and I'm a 1 stripe purple". It was amazing to see someone who regarded belt rank so highly that they would go from treating someone as a superior, to treating someone as an inferior person. I just laughed and told him a BJJ belt doesn't even do a good job at it's intended purpose of keeping a kimono closed, how does he expect it to be a truthful measure of skill. The blank stare in his eyes was worth 1,000 words.

Right! The most skilled grappler that I have ever rolled against was a white belt who trained 15 years in Catchwrestling but couldn’t be considered a black belt because he didn’t train with a gi. I think tank matters in some sense, but it doesn’t really matter that much. I respect anyone that has earned rank, but it’s like an advanced degree: having it doesn’t make your reasoning or conclusions correct. Hopefully, the advanced degree means that you know how to think critically, reason well, and exhibit subject matter expertise in a field. Yet, a PhD that employs bad logic is as wrong as a layman who does the same. I see rank the same way.

I hear a lot things about black belts starting "a new journey", and you say that you learned more between 2012-2018 than the 25 years prior combined. Here's my question: what exactly do you learn after becoming a black belt?
@KamaJiuJitsu
4 жыл бұрын
it's difficult to explain other than that imagine you learn about the existence of a bunch of puzzle pieces (jiu-jitsu concepts/techniques/philosophies) as a white belt. you begin to put them together, one by one. you learn of more pieces to add to the puzzle as a blue belt, while continuing to put together more pieces gained during white belt. purple belt, just like blue belt. brown belt, you put all the pieces together and by earning black belt, the puzzle is "completed." once black belt, you realize that the puzzle you completed is but one puzzle of many that are constantly being revealed to you. those revelations can be anything from insights your instructor didn't reveal to you until then, insights on how and why you were teaching your students (when you were teaching as a junior belt) missing a lot of stuff you wish you knew then, you realize that the belt really means nothing (but you cannot really enlighten your students to that because it's a concept that you need to experience to understand (you need to actually earn the black belt)), etc etc etc.

Allow me to answer your question as to why some people or myself anyway got a Black Belt / Black Belts and quit. I earned my 1st Dan in TAEKWONDO in 1978, I continued on collecting Dan's and continued in TKD up till achieving 5th Dan ( Sr. Master ) in 1993 untill I decided I wanted a new challange and experience so I dedicated my attention to learning chinese KENPO Karate. I earned my Shodan in KENPO in 2010, and went on to become interested in Gracie Jiujitsu. I am now a student of GJJ and find this art so challenging, and diametrically opposed to any of the stand up arts I've studied that I forsee GJJ taking up the rest of my life learning since I'm almost 58 years of right now. In closing, allow me to give you this analogy, Stand up & Ground Arts are like Tomato's and Grapes both are Fun & Necasary but very different. My stand up arts supplied my desire for Tomato's, My Gracie Jiujitsu is satisfing my hunger for Grapes! .. This probably isn't the same for everyone, but it's worked for me thru the decades. can you dig it?

My question would be this: have you forgotten everything that you've already learned, or do you add what you learn to your new art? Could you teach TKD now, if you wanted to? No disrespect to what you have accomplished, but I am always fascinated by people who practice multiple martial arts.

I remember everything my ( Sawbumnim / Teacher / Instructer ) ever taught me including learning to speak some ( Han Gul Mahl / Korean Language ) I also went to Korea to Study, Compete, and perform Demo's as a 3rd Dan BB in 1989. ...TAEKWONDO / TANGSOODO is my Foundation I Respect it and it will allway's be a part of me and my stand up arsenal, Chinese / American KENPO under Ed Parker lineage for which I also hold a BB, and MUAY THAI under Chaiwatt Palaviwantana who was a Buddhist Monk and very talented THAI BORAN practicioner who taught me are also close to my heart. BUT, as people get older it is harder to do those Jumping, Spinning, and really High Kicks. I'm not saying I can't I just look for easier ways these days. HOWEVER, On Nov 12 th 1993 in Colorado Springs, CO. @ UFC #1 Grand Master Helio Gracie's Representitives Rorion, Rickson, and Royce Gracie taught me and the rest of the World who is in touch with Reality that everyone who is Serious about Martial Arts and Self Defense has to Study GRACIE JIUJITSU... PERIOD. ... and that has my Focus at this point. I've owned and opperated 2 Dojangs previously, and I plan to Retire from the workforce in 4 years. I plan to teach Martial Arts at that point. I'm currently building my 3rd Dojang espeacily for that date in 2022. I bought a Commercial / Residential house and am remodling it to look like a Buddhist Temple. I think that will provide Mental Stimulation over the common warehouse / glass storefront commonly seen / used to teach out of these day's. I hope to be a Blue Belt in GJJ by then. And GRACIE JIUJITSU is going to be part of my curiculum. .. I hope I've answered your question's Sir? 3:)

I suppose you are referring to Ryan's "belt collector" comment. I won't speak for Professor Ryan, but I "think" what he means is that people shouldn't just collect black belts to display them on a wall in order to drive traffic to their schools. I started training in martial arts about 20 years ago and eventually earned my 2nd degree black belt in karate. But I recognized that grappling is also an essential skill, and something I was lacking in, so I started judo while continuing in striking arts. After doing judo for approximately 13 years, I realized that my ground game isn't as well developed as I would like it to be, so I've started training with Prof Ryan, while cross-training in bjj and judo (I realized most people don't have time to train 4-5 days a week, but I'm an addict and I admit it). I might get a black belt in bjj one day, but that's not why I'm on the mat. I just like to learn. I guess the difference is in mentality. Is the person wanting to earn the next black belt to feed their ego and show off to people, or are they training in another art as a way to progress in their martial arts journey?

I do not have a black belt in Brazilian jujitsu but I do have a black belt in wing chug and I’ve held a certification in many Thai I’m under master chi but I spent a lifetime of teaching and learning. I’ve told students many times you’re black is only the start of your journey there’s much more to learn it’s hard for people to understand that. I mean you spent all these years learning earning a black what more is there i’ll be honest I do have a hard time explaining what else there is to learn I look at it as you do earn that black belt then you’ll understand how much more there is I really appreciated this video and a help to me To understand my process is really on the right track a mindset I believe the key to being a black belt is not because you’ve already learned your techniques has a brown belt and I’ve always explained the brown belt is with more due to being a black my problem is there’s no high level Muay Thai schools around here and there’s no wing chug I have two kids I’m barely making it I can’t afford to go to Oregon to retest but I know that doesn’t take away what I have earned and I train and teach on a daily basis but thank you for the video and it let me know that I’m on the right track and I still have the mindset of what it takes to be a blackbelt I have Study jujitsu I’ve earned 4 degrees of white and unfortunately I had to move away I really want to pursue jujitsu I’m gonna make that my next blackbelt

As a lowly white belt (almost blue), I say movements and the recognition of movements is important and vital to your success much more so than knowing everything under the Sun in terms of BJJ. I believe that in any given position, depending on their grip, hips and feet they have limited options. Because of the volatile nature of BJJ, the shaper you are at recognizing these positions, the better off you'll be and the quicker you'll progress in BJJ overall.

My first sensei recently gave me hope to continue in another school. I trained with him for 10 years, but was never able to achieve my black. He held it back because I was too young. I realize that now. I didn't realize my skill was on par, but my person was not. Now, 15 years later, I'm starting new. You never forget what you learned, but I feel I need to earn it, "again." My journey is very different. But I'm glad to have been on the paslth the whole time.
