Just today I had an abnormal spike in my blood sugar, reaching as far as 427. This was after I ate a meal. I wasn't sure why at all that would happen and why my insulin took so long to work. I'm still not entirely sure and will ask my endocrinologist about it next month, but this video has seriously helped me understand why certain foods affect my sugars more than others and has helped me understand this episode of high blood sugar a little more. Thank you so much!

Once upon a time, there was a man named John who loved to eat sugary foods. He enjoyed candy, cakes, and ice cream regularly, but he started to notice that he was feeling more tired and sluggish than usual. He went to see a doctor, who told him that his blood sugar levels were high and that he needed to make some changes to his diet. The doctor introduced John to the concept of the glycemic index, which is a measure of how quickly carbohydrates in food are digested and absorbed and how they affect blood sugar levels. John was surprised to learn that the foods he loved to eat were high on the glycemic index and were causing his blood sugar levels to spike, leading to fatigue and other health issues. The doctor advised John to start incorporating more low glycemic index foods into his diet, such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. John took the advice to heart and started making changes to his eating habits. He swapped out sugary snacks for healthier options and started cooking meals with more low GI foods. Over time, John noticed that he had more energy and felt better overall. His blood sugar levels were also more stable, and he was able to maintain a healthy weight. John was grateful to have learned about the glycemic index and how it had helped him take control of his health.

Very good video! Just one thing, GI doesn't mean it's "faster", all carbs have more or less the same speed. What it measures is rather "how much %" of the total carbohydrates is digested. You can see it even comparing the 2 graphs at 0:42.

If you think this is accurate, please provide evidence to back up your claim. As far as I am led to believe, being a type 1 diabetic is that the carbohydrate in a portion of food is used almost exclusively for the purpose of calculating the insulin dose to be administered. It doesn't make any logical sense to stipulate that in a low-GI food only x% of the carbohydrate will be digested (or absorbed into the bloodstream). Where will the remainder of the carbohydrate therefore go? Insulin has to work on the quantity of glucose extracted from the carbohydrate; therefore if not all of the carbohydrate is digested, then logically the insulin dose administered as a consequence would send the person into a hypoglycaemic state. The GI refers to the speed at which the glucose in carbohydrates enters the bloodstream, not a % of the total carbohydrates digested.

Thank you for this video! Question: If I was to eat baked sweet potato (gi of approx 82), with a full meal including protein and fat, about how much would the glycemic index or load drop? Assuming I ate a balanced amount of each food in that meal.

I just read that there is 12 grams of carbs in cup(152 grams) of watermelon. To get to 50 grams of carbs for watermelon you have to consume at least four cups or 600 grams of watermelon to calculate glycemic index. Is this realistic?
@jameskantor0459
4 жыл бұрын
Stuart Perry , it is do in a laboratory setting with ten people. Remember the GI is based glucose, you don’t need to much too get 100, so other food a based on that. One cup of watermelon is a normal serving. I often have just 1/2 cup. Look up on you tube or google glycemic index/ glycemic load. Dr Ekberg does a good job of explaining. Remember you ideal what to keep your total carbs for a day to under 70-100 grams to be low carbs. A keto diet says you want to be under 50 grams . As a diabetic is I eat more than 150 gems in one day it throws of my blood sugar levels.

50 grams of carbs is like drinking a 20 ounce soda. But how much food do you consume 50grams of sugar in one serving.
@jameskantor0459
4 жыл бұрын
you @ Stuart Perry , you can look up glycemic index and load of many foods. Otherwise the amount of grams of carbs are on the package. I have found if I say under 20 gram of carbs will not raise my blood sugar. A meal of over 30 grams of carbs will begin to raise sugar. I can not eat 50 grams of carbs without raising my blood sugar a lot. I am a type 2 diabetic on metformin. Did this answer your question?
