Idk about mature theme. It's absurdity in motion, with a randomly picked theme as its scapegoat for it to do anything and everything imaginable. Honestly, that's just his style and I respect that, but I can't say it's enjoyable for me. I like something realistic and bittersweet. How about you? Do you like Yuasa's style?

Yuasa was the dude that got me into looking what studios/people were involved in making the anime I was watching. I was a "casual" anime watcher, meaning I "just" read/watch videos about whats been good and emblematic since it's inception, and see the ones people praise + the ones that seem interesting to me each season. I remember one day looking at some "anime funny moments xD" in youtube, and seeing some dude getting his first kiss, then transforming into a monster and accidentally eating his partner. While hilarious, I was surprised about how it didn't look "anime-ish" at all. So in curiosity I looked into it, found it was called Kemonozume and got really into it the instant I pressed play. I mean, the Auvers Blue intro is to this day one of my favorites (probably because I always skip it, don't spoil me about the show man), but the artstyle... both realistic and abstract, detailed and harsh, things went out of size, expresions were overblown, filled with like an explosive energy, it was, like you said, similar to 70's WB cartoon, but totally unique in it's own way. In time I coincidentally found Mind-Game, Tatami Galaxy, Kick-Heart, Ping-Pong and Genius Party. Each time I always said "man, this artstyle. This way of animating is my SHIT" and forgot about it. Recently with Devilman, out of sheer curiosity about the whole project I searched in MAL who did this unholy beauty that catered to my animated tastes. Then everything clicked. It was fucking Masaaki Yuasa all along. I found that he participated in creating "Onkyo Seimeitai Noiseman", one of the first japanese things I've ever saw. The one thing that got me into watching "Locomotion" (a latin american channel about japanese stuff) each day until the day it was shut down. Which got me into watching anime online and finding a comunity that got me into watching his works again. The man literally got me into the medium thanks to the fluidity of his stuff, and thanks to his artstyle I always crave to see "non-conventionally" animated animu. So, in conclusion, I plan to see each thing the man has been involved into and recommend everyone to dip his toes into his work to see if he clicks with you the same way it did to me.

@selma_el

Yes Tekkonkinkreet is an absolute masterpiece ! It was actually directed by an American, Michael Aras, and it's adapted from a manga by Taiyō Matsumoto. The studio though is japanese, it's 4°C, which animated Mind Game by Yuasa. Genius Party is from the same studio and if you haven't already seen it you should definitely check it out ! It's an anthology of shorts, with many different animation styles, it's honey for the eyes As for me I discovered Yuasa's work with Tatami Galaxy and it was dope; as a huge fan of Asian Kung-fu Generation and their album covers, I felt like I was watching Yusuke Nakamura's art come to life through animation. Then I saw Mind Game and got absolutely mind-blown ! Now I'm really into his work and can't get enough of it, he's just such an amazing, unique, creative animator and director. As you said @JonsonerETA , that's my shit !

I cannot understand how people can praise something that gives them a sense of false hope. There’s one scene in this film that hits me very hard, where we observe senpai’s thoughts and feelings visualized in a courtroom. I’ve been struggling with depression ever since this pandemic hit and I’ve undergone a number of breakups; few as they were affected me severely. Whereas senpai manages to win her heart in one night, I attempted to cut my arm purposefully a few nights ago because that’s how hopeless I feel the situation to be. Sometimes I still feel that way. All I want in the end is someone I can cherish, hold close, and share this life of mine with, explore the great outdoors and settle down in a small log cabin in the Rocky Mountains to raise a family. But sometimes I feel like I’m asking too much. The film said, “Waiting hurts, and being waited upon hurts. But those who are alone must act.” I’ve tried many times only to have my heartbroken. I’ve lost how many girls I’ve given my number to in College. Senpai has no fucking clue how lucky he is. All the shenanigans, the magic moments, the confessions, they’re bullshit, unreal. They’ll never happen to me. Sometimes I feel like my heart is so broken, it’ll implode. I hate myself because I fail to accomplish what senpai did in one night. I’ve turned to alcohol to drown my sorrow because Otome seems happy when she drinks a lot. I need help.

The normal way of doing it animation, is where the core of every action is build from what is stable and recognizable in the respective art style and then combine it with expression to tell the story. The way he does it, is by making the core of every action build from expression, and then combine it with what we perceive as recognizable and stable in the respective art style. It is purely expression with an art style coating.

It is true that Yuasa gives a lot of freedom to the artists under him to improvise, but I wouldn't call that the defining quality of what makes him different. Many different anime will allow animators to come in and draw relatively uncorrected because they're a specialist. Or allow a storyboarder to add their own flair to a show (see Masahi Ishihama's Ep 6 of Occultic;Nine for an extreme example) . Shows like Mob Psycho 100 and One Punch Man allow the animators to run wild and express their own creativity through their line. If this improvisation is what makes Yuasa stand out, then how does that make him different from Yuzuru Tachikawa, Shingo Natsume, Ryo-Timo, or Hiroyuki Imaishi?

To me I've always been able to detect it through the flat colors. There isn't as much detail put into the realism of the movements of his characters or the visual beauty (even though he can produce some very visually pleasing stuff) it's more about producing movements that will very clearly convey a concept. He's also not afraid of making his characters look different from each other which benefits the distinction of his work. Overall it's sacrificing realistic elements, or immediate visual beauty to focus on the animation part of his works, which makes his version of anime more visually appealing in a way.
@dacmister

I've only seen clips or stills of his work in passing, so I'm not sure if these are films or shows. What really struck me, especially with the anime that seems to pertain to drinking, is the use of color, and the general quirkiness of the director, seems to really be reminiscent of Wes Anderson. Though Wes uses more symmetrical and centered shots and blocking, I feel Yuasa's style fits somewhere in the same league as Wes of odd, experimental, yet captivating. Definitely going to have to check it out! Thanks for the great video.

I'm so happy you decided to talk about Yuasa. His works are truly amazing in many ways. His works have always been oustanding and different... His animation style is not the typical one, and I think that's important, tough many people find this weird and uncomfortable. I think colors in Yuasa's works are also extremely important. In Tatami Galaxy or Kaiba, color palettes are constantly changing depending on the scene, the mood and the episode. Most of times, there are big contrast between characters and backgrounds... And he chooses very weird combinations. He may suddenly start using red and blue when the scenario was green and yellow, for example... It's hard to explain, but I think that's a feature you can easily see in any of the animes he has been working in. And i think that's other point of his personal style. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I found this video really interesting, I'm sure some os us learned one or two important facts thanks to your research. Nice job!

Where the team is allowed creative freedom under Yuasa, Miyazaki will personally sit there and edit entire scenes himself to make sure that everything is uniform. I'm just a bullshitter with a very narrow mind in some cases but I feel like a lot of Yuasa's works (probably inadvertantly?) exhibit the feeling of zen Buddhism. They're very chaotic yet within all of that, strangely incredibly peaceful. Even depictions of death in his works are often are given such a feeling of blatant simplicity that.. it just doesn't feel like a particularly bad or good thing, just another normal part of life. I feel like most things in his works have that - even if they're very sad or scary instances, there's still a feeling of casually moving on to something more productive or positive that's really wonderful. Of course, that doesn't go for everything he makes, just a majority of it imo. I still think it's really unusual and refreshing, I like it.

The point of anime or cartoons is to make your wildest ideas come to life. To make the impossible possible. There are certain expressions, angles, and stylistic things you can do that real actors can't pull off. Ironically the generic stuff being pushed out typically conforms to one monotone idea. The creativity is suppressed for conformity of experience. Typically slice of life anime tends to try to get movement as real as they can. So you don't get anything too eye popping usually. Directing usually isn't too flashy or innovative. So whats the point? At this point why not use real actors? Ha I can't help but bash on slice of life when I can. Its a small bit of why the seasonal animes are stagnating.
@yz2203
6 жыл бұрын
There are a few exceptions like Nichijou was a slice of life but they legit took the reins off the animators and you can see their heart and soul pouring into it. Then you look at some trash like Umaru or Eromanga Sensei and its like. Yeah. This is the complete opposite of creative freedom. Some of them make up for it with enjoyable writing at least like maybe MItsuboshi Colors or Yuru Camp.
@TheMsLollidella

I can see that because lots of "regualr" anime is usually focused on detail or story, which is fine too since to me the most important is the story and how well its told. But when i see a show having fun with animation like lets say ed edd and eddy, its fun to watch and enjoyable because you can see the animators really are being creative as in having free range. It might also have to do with the animation style but American cartoons are way funnier to me than japanese ones, idk y maybe the type of humor but im sure the animation style is part of the reason why.
