-- Tom, get a drain valve for the sump on the JCB. Preferably one with a hose fitting so you can neatly drain the oil into your fancy whatsit down in the pit. Also, Form-A-Funnel exists. Get some of them too. -- Get an air powered bulk grease gun. Quick coupler on the end of the grease line so you can change fittings (e.g. right angle for tight spaces). Default should be a lock on coupler of some description. FWIW I mainly use a LockNLube lock on grease coupler, but I do have others for certain fittings. -- Related tip: once you have a bulk grease gun, remove the bleeder screws on your normal grease guns and replace them with grease nipples. When you find the little grease gun is getting low (we still use them for greasing out in the field), just take it into the workshop, connect up to the bulk greaser and pull the trigger. A couple of minutes later, your grease gun is full again without making a mess! -- While you're getting a bulk grease gun, get some air powered drum pumps for your oils. With flow meters so you know how much oil you've added. Again: easier, cleaner and cheaper. Just wheel out whichever oil drum you need for a given machine, connect the air line, pull the trigger, stop when the appropriate quantity has been added, check on dipstick, wheel the drum away. -- Wet and dry shop vac for cleaning the pit. Get one with a long hose (5m+) and a long piece of pipe on the end (whatever length suits you) so you can vacuum out the pit while standing on the shop floor next to it. If I think of anything else, I'll come back and add it!

Pit is awesome. Light colour for the floor. White, cream or grey. I am also starting to suspect some heavy industry maintenance experience lurking in the backgroud... P.S. careful blowing stuff INTO air filter media... dirty filters actually have a higher particle arrest efficiency, albeit at expense of some power loss. Depth or surface loading filters designed for pulse cleaning have special construction and the air is blown from inside out.

Nice work again Tom,why don’t you get the air type grease gun that fits on the top of a 20 litre tub of grease you have already got the compressed air to drive it and it’s probably a lot cheaper than a battery grease gun

Def painted floor ! Battleship grey 👌 would recommend a company called “clover chemicals” they do two products which are really good. One is “diamond extra” which is a mop on polish has a wet look but very “grippy” and the other is “viro-sol” it’s a degreaser and it works wonders ! Even cleans alloy wheels, absolutely melts off !

Many maintenance shops invest in a 40 litre pneumatic air operated pump / grease bucket, they usually come with a long hose with a gun on the end. You already have shop air, so it may be an ideal investment for you. The tubes of grease that you are probably using (400 grams) cost a fortune compared when buying grease in 40 litre buckets. As a bonus the grease bucket saves a lot of time when greasing as many grease-zerks as you have on your agricultural machines.

Floor colour, light grey, reflect some of that light back up under whatever you're working on. Also, a decent, 50 mm hose, wet and dry shop vac for keeping the pit and surrounding areas clean. I used to run engine test cells and learned to wet mop to keep the test cell clean. The process was to use a lot of water (with a decent commercial cleaner in it), mop it around, vac up the majority and then go back over the floor with a rung out mop (this works best with a flat mop and a squeezing bucket), rinsing and squeezing as the mop picked up the residual water. A light coloured floor make it easy to see the dirt and keep on top of it. I used to clean the test cell every time I swapped an engine out (sometimes three times a day) and could clean an area the size of your pit in around 15-20 minutes, normally while the engine was warming up.

@@johnwarwick4105 that's as maybe but a workshop works better if you can keep the shit to a minimum. It's more pleasant and productive to work in and easier to find that bit you drop it the place isn't grotty. Keeping on top of dirt by having the right tools (shop vac and a mop) is not that time consuming. In the case of the engine testbeds I was responsible for it was more productive to make a mess and then clean up after then to fanny about trying to catch minor spillages while you were doing the job. I was testing a pre-production engine family for one of the major motor manufacturers and, as such, engine on test was what we got paid for. I could change an engine over, including fitting and connecting the instrumentation, in one hour fifty five minutes from pressing the stop button to starting the next engine. Mess gets made but discipline keeps the place in order. The other thing to bare in mind is what sort of image do you want to present to the world; we had the client on site and likely to visit the testbed at any time, Tom sticks his videos on KZitem for the world to see: it's all about presentation and how you want to be perceived.

If You had one of the old jcb's with the Perkins 6 cyl in, easy job re oil 😂 electric grease guns are bad news as you have no feedback. Also good to put a bit of oil in filter before you put it on as it allows the elements to moisten up as otherwise when you first start you may have low pressure briefly

If it helps I have no idea on the floor coating. Literally none, because it packs in with dirt and oil until it makes no difference. If I was going mad I would line it with steel trays levelled up with that fibre glass waffle board. Tug them once a year, shovel out the worst, jet wash the trays in the yard and throw it all back in. That seems excessive though :D
