For anyone who reads this comment, The issue here and on all impalas of this generation - the whining noise is often due to your vehicle needing power steering or a poor power steering pump. Symptoms of this issue is whining while turning wheel or accelerating and a tight steering wheel. This is a common issue and isn't difficult to fix. Check under your car to make sure your power steering isn't leaking, if that's good then you can just top off the fluid and everything will be back to normal. If it continues you may need a pump which I doubt would occur since they aren't likely to fail. If whining occured while you are stopped , and you have no difference in steering, then you will most likely need a transmission fluid change. But that's basically it for what I known with these cars

Took my IMPALA too GOODYEAR WHERE I always go to they check my car thoroughly. The water pump is fine, power steering pump is fine. They finally told me it is inside the transmission which is normal sound when these cars have high mileage. My 2006 has 156,000 original miles on it. They said just keep with the fluid exchange or flush and it will be fine. Mine is still running fine.

I had a small leak on the back side of the power steering pump. There is a small rubber hose that connects the low pressure return line to the back of the pump. When the fluid got low I would get this same whining noise. Check for leaks and make sure the power steering fluid is good and at the right level.

Power steering. Use a turkey baster to change out the power steering fluid gradually.

Don’t know if it’s still relevant but that’s the power steering pump pumping air. Had the same issue on mine and it finally gave up the ghost.

Did you get a response on this? I know it's not the power steering pump for mine either. Got new pump and lines for discharge and return also.

@xx_sm1l3ym3rk_xx7 did you check for air in the pump? Try overfilling it too force out air. Otherwise could be small hole in line or rack
