Sorry for the late reply , fear is the natural phenomenon, everyone on this planet has some kind of fears . If you want to overcome your fears than you need to develop your navel center. It does not happen normally, you may be holding the mudra for long time, when ever you feel discomfort, release the mudra relax your hand nd also do wrist warm up exercises to strengthen the wrist

Yes you can try but it is best if you practice it while sitting because while lying down you can fall asleep and may loose the contact of the fingers in this mudra

You mean that there is no need for the thumbs of this mudra to touch the upper abdomen(solar plexus) "directly". Just placing the mudra in front of the upper abdomen will be okay?

There is no hard and fast rule for this , u can try both ways, nd chk which works best for u, aim is to place the mudra around the abdominal region.
