2600 bass is gritty and raw. Probably scared a few kids, I love it. Triangle is calming and fitting with Nintendos titles NES KA bass is a pretty standard PWM square, not that interesting but it’s clean and does the job well. Sun soft bass is airy and deep, definitely a memorable sound for those who experienced it. Genesis bass looks like FM synthesis, sounds clean but probably wasn’t the focus of whatever pieces it was in.
Genesis was definitely FM. The sound chip only had 1 pcm sample channel and the pitch/frequency couldn't be changed, so it was pretty much only used for things like drums or speech samples etc. The rest of the sound channels were pure FM, with a fixed lowpass on the output that varied depending on the board revision

As someone who grew up with the Commodore C64 I got to say...the SID Chip is missing :D But I think the Atari 2600 is closest (and the NES Kirby adventure bass), liking that one the most. I never liked the Ninendo sounds, usually they are very light and "beepy", compared to the very dirty sounds of the C64. I like the NES Triangle the least. The NES Sunsoft Bass also sounds kinda cool, but not sure I would like it over long periods. Reminds me of some Mod Music on the Commodore Amiga.

But usually C64 songs go for the common route and put the filter on the bass and always produce the same twangy twang with it, even though a 50-25% PWM as the bass has a much dirtier sound. I guess that my SID design philosophy is just different and I prefer the filter being used for other things.

@@vuurniacsquarewave5091 Just had to write to say how much I agree. I suppose when we learn how to use the filter, it's too tempting to do that downwards low pass sweep (with max resonance of course!) to make a 'real' synth bass. Around that same time SNES had some _fantastic_ soundtracks like FF4, Link to the Past, Axelay, FF6, Super Star Wars. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate the better Genesis tracks (stuff from Sonic, Thunder Force 4, etc), it just means that often when I appreciate those very well-composed soundtracks it's with a slight disappointment they were limited by the instruments of the Genesis (Thunder Force with better guitar samples would've been one of the best soundtracks of its era I think, but with the guitar it had it's a bit "tinny" sounding).

I like how, reading the top comments, the favorite bassline between people varies so much. Instruments (and musical ideas in general) are so amazing because of how they communicate in a unique way to different people. Different combinations of certain sounds and rhythms affect people in different ways. It’s kinda beautiful.

I love the NES triangle bass. I find it so relaxing.

The sega genesis bass may not have as much punch, but it was a lot grittier and cooler sounding than anything the SNES was doing. It reminds me a lot of Lemmy from Motorheads bass, it doesn't have as much low end but the distortion just rips through the mix

I love the high pitch, overtone-like sounds of the NES basic triangle bass! It always tickles my ears!

Fun fact, Journey to Silius by SUNSOFT on the NES had a special audio chip in the cartridge. Listen to the Journey to Silius soundtrack... it sounds amazing.
