"People had other resources there whole life I didn't have", as a Mexican-American from a low income family that hit hard.

I hate when more well-off families think we have it good, l'll be completing my AA degree next fall but you dont know how hard I worked, I would stay at the library till closing, go to tutoring centers till closing, only eating a small bag of chips till I arrive at home at 5 because I need to save money for the 30 minute commute I have to make 4 days a week back and fourth(I take my siblings to school in morning so I arrive at college at 8, and spend my time studying till my classes start). The pressure is crazy to, my parents dont push me too hard, but seeing my family suffering economically, and not knowing if one day my dad won't be able to provide to the family anymore because of his age is enough motivation and puts tremendous amount of pressure on my academics.

@@user-xb9hb9rt8tI would totally reccomend finding or searching for an in-college organization like TRIOS that helps first-gen low-income students(I didnt do that until my second year in college, and I wish I could've done it sooner). They could potentially help you set up schedule(make sure your not taking impossible classes that you dont need), hook you up with scholarships etc. Depending on your college, you might have a resource center, and if you live far enough, you can get travel assistance( plus you can figure out if you can get help paying for books in the same area). DONT EVER BE AFRAID TO ASK YOUR PROFESSOR QUESTIONS about assignments, they actually appreciate it.

@@user-xb9hb9rt8t I HIGHLY RECCOMEND, finding out where your Tutoring center and counseling center in your first month in college. Being a first year college student is not easy, especially a first gen college student and courses are gonna get hard but if you know those two locations it can make a difference. In tutor centers, your sure to make highly motivated friends and even friends with student tutors who can give you deets on who is good or bad professors. I also reccomend signing up for work-study if you haven't and applying for jobs on campus or near campus.

@@user-xb9hb9rt8t Latino families(as you know yourself) are pretty loud sometimes Haha, so if you can search for any public libraries near your house where you can work on homework when you need to concentrate on essay(also knowing where the tutor center is you might ask if your college offers writing services to help you proofread your essays + assignments)

@@user-xb9hb9rt8t it you have any disabilities(mental or physical ex. Depression/anxiety and if you've been diagnosed by a therapist and even if you havent been diagnosed you can see if you can be diagnosed in order to get accommodations) you can see if you school offers you any type of accommodations, you usually can meet with counselors there too if you mentally struggling in class as well.

Well consider me a first generation college student. The only person in my family who graduated college was my father and he died when I was a little boy. Nobody could help me with school and I wasn't left with any academic resources to follow his footsteps. I am the pioneer of education in my family now.

WOW! Thanks for creating this video, Madison. I'm a first-gen college graduate and words can't express how alienated I felt that first week of undergrad.

I remember when I enter college the first time and getting courses, I got a psychology course. The school counselor wasn’t that good and didn’t advice me in the courses and now, I feel hurt. I want to transfer to university but my gpa isn’t that okay. It’s a B gpa for my impacted major like nursing. I can see now, is true. It makes sense how first generation students make the path and footprints for others in the family. We work hard but we suffer since is hard even without support like we have to do it ourselves :(
