Very good analysis about never being satisfied with your game (from Bob Dylan)! You described so many feelings that I have personally felt. When other people say “good shot!” And you know “not really, I intended better shape than that”. There are those rare moments when the maneuver you’ve been working on in practice shows up in a tournament and you execute it to perfection with the stroke of a pro. For those few seconds you feel like you have arrived. Then you go back to being down on yourself.

Thanks 44. It's because we strive for perfection and it's unobtainable. There's always better and the closer we get to it the more fragile it gets. I think the key is to shoot for "good enough" and forget perfection. Every pool player wants 9 easy straight in shots every game but it's not going to happen and trying to make it happen is killing us. Instead of shooting for pinpoint position let's try shooting for an area or a safe-zone. It'll reduce the pressure and allow us to breathe and enjoy the game and life more. **Sorry this reply is so late. I somehow missed it the first time around. Have a great Christmas or whatever holiday you celebrate.

My pool table in in my business, which is also my home of 25 years. I get out to shop for food or gas and shoot at tournaments, little else. As is my plan for the next many years. Love your stuff Mr. Disque, tell it like it is. I have a select group of pool friends I am going to invite over from time to time, I will try and capture your wisdom and pass it on.

Sounds like a great life to me. One day I will crash and bring the nachos and beer. It's all about reaching back and trying to make it a little easier for the next pool junkie. I mean - we can't take it with us. It's not about luck so I won't say good luck but I will say stop when you get bad position and go back and fix it... That's the key to progress. Peace!

I have a pipe dream, and it’s to be a pro one day. I’m sure that’s thousands of pool players’ dreams. Knowing, I’m not anywhere close to the best guy there, but I do relate to what you said about “Being okay with never being good enough” because as pool players, we are all hard on ourselves, to the extreme for some. No matter if you shot lights out one night, that’s what separates the good from the great players IMO, never being satisfied. I guess it’s the competitive side of us, wanting to be perfect, even though there’s no such thing as perfection in pool.
@JohnDisque

Don't call it a pipe-dream Tyler... It's perfectly 100% possible. It's just going to take a lot of work - more than most are willing to do and smarter than most people want to be. When you're practicing don't skip by mistake... set it back up and figure out what you did wrong. Then do it right 10x in a row. If you skip by it and assume you'll be better next time you're telling your subconscious you're fine with how you did it.... it's what you wanted to do and then you'll keep doing it. You have to tell your subconscious you're not happy with it and you have to fix it. Don't beat yourself up - just fix it. ((((THIS is the #1 mistake pool players make and you can excel quickly if you get it through your head now)))). The learning process is a lifelong thing. Even when you're the best - it's never going to end so just make it a way of life and accept it. Peace

Thank you for taking the time to reply brother, means a lot. I’ll 100% start doing that in my practice sessions. Really what I have learned is that, you get out what you put into it. I see Shane do this all the time, he’ll make a great shot and be just a hair out of line and he’s shaking his head with a smile. I catch myself doing that a lot, the guys on my team will be like “Man you’re shooting great don’t be so hard on yourself” it’s not that I don’t appreciate them, but in my head I’m like “I got funny on the 6 trying to get back over for the 7”. I feel like I’m on a different level mentally than they are. Again, which is completely okay. That’s what I catch myself doing, constantly trying to be better, to have the table vision, have a straighter stroke, a calm demeanor, etc. I often wonder why I picked one of the hardest games to want to master but here I am haha

Hi Rustie. Thanks. Hey - Remind me about the Efren-thing when it gets close and I'll come see it and spread the word. I'm not sure I would know what to ask Efren. We'd probably wind up talking about women or food or something that has nothing to do with pool. They say that if Efren plays badly he'll never wear the shirt he was wearing again. Filipinos are somewhat superstitious like that. Have you ever seen him dog a shot and reach back and pluck the back of his shirt? That's him getting the monkey off his back. Many years ago I got to sit down with him, Fransisco and 7 or 8 other folks from the Philippines but they were playing some kind of card game that I didn't know anything about so me and Bustamante did shots of some weird alcohol while they all laughed at me each time I did a shot because it made me cringe. They're all a bunch of great guys and I found myself want to go back to the Philippines with them.

Mare was a no-show...., but it's pool - not a dental appointment so.... it would be typical. She knows where to find me and there's a chance she'll be around tonight. Her female perspective is going to be different than the typical female perspective because she's a bar-hustler and not someone with a big dream to play on the woman's pro-tour. It's just completely old-school here. Nonetheless it will be fascinating and then she'll be a position to think different and fly straight while having some income to make the transition. I'll keep you posted. I was going to mention it in this video but it's kind of a downer at this point. Peace.

Pretty good observation John. You can learn quite a bit about somebody by just watching them play pool. Pool players seem to wear they’re heart on they’re sleeve. Speaking of heart, you just gotta have it if you want to progress. Some have it, some don’t.
