I'm now 73 years old and graduated from Coast Guard boot camp in June 1969. It was the experience of a lifetime and brought back mostly great and a couple of painful memories. It was well worth it. And believe it or not, boot camp back then was much worse than a lot of what was shown in this video. After boot camp, I was stationed aboard the USCGC Ingram in Norfolk, VA. After a unique set of assignments, I was promoted to Yeoman First Class during my first 4-year enlistment and finished undergraduate and graduate school while on active duty in 1976. I also spent several years in the Coast Guard Reserves. I owe my life and a diverse and successful number of careers in the public and private sectors to the USCG. I am proud of the men and women who serve this vital military organization, the nation's oldest and continuous sea-going service. SEMPER PARATUS!

My childhood friend worked his ass off to become a Canadian coast guard. He made everyone so proud, but he had a wakeboard accident that absolutely destroyed his leg and ability to walk, subsequently loosing said employment. Saddest story I know, and even sadder seeing what he had to go through to get where he was. He has since been able to become an EMS first responder, so that will do. Can't keep down a legend.

Some information that they missed is: They can send you back as many weeks as they want as discipline. But it also depends on what you’ve done. When you get set back you change to the company before you. Also, you do get breaks near the end of boot camp. The first time is in week 7 or 8 when you can go to the exchange and restaurant on base and also use your cellphone. The second time, you may go off base. However they do not allow you to go to the beach, because they can’t risk anyone getting injured. Once there was a girl who got badly hurt. I think she broke some bones? Anyways, I believe she was in boot camp for about 20ish weeks. But she finally graduated with my brothers company last year. Another thing is; someone got sent back to week 2 i believe for flicking the company company commander on the bus right after he graduated. Also, credits to my brother for this info!

Seems he didn't learn much after all. Very discouraged of him now because he had so much benefits ahead of him only to now throw them away. As one person said, "it's a problem with today's generation. They can't seem to realize great things ahead because they are blinded by the "screen" few inches in front of their face." Oh well....his loss ! ! ! ======== Proud to say my stepson just graduated from this academy (July 2023). Yes, he wanted to get out. Yes, he said it was difficult. But most importantly, yes, he is an accomplished and proud part of the USCG. Thank you, Cape May and thank you video crew for publishing this so we can all receive a small glimpse of what it means to become and be a United States Coast Guard. Congratulations to all who have and will continue to make it through. May God bless you each of you the strength and wisdom.

The Coast Guard is so underrespected. Not only do they have to be a military organization, but they are also every form of first responders out there. Having spent time teaching sailing in New London and having the opportunity to talk to many of these fine men and women, I definitely got an education on the coast guard as admittedly I didn’t know a ton about it but having now gotten to meet and hear the stories of those serving, I’m beyond impressed by the quality, professionalism, and dedication to learning that these men and women possess. Truly an honor to even be in their presence (also shout out to the Naval Submariners, especially those who recommended the book Thunder Below by Admiral Eugene B Fluckey)

Sierra 112 here (6/1982) - I think one of these companies was Sierra as well. This brought back a lot of memories. Same barracks, though the bunks were newer. It looks like it was the hooks not in on the bed that got you in trouble, with ss it was not having the combo on your lock set to zero. God forbid a locker was not locked - White Tornado (CC trashed the whole place). I'm not going to tell a "log cabin" story but here's a few things that have changed. First, nice sneakers. They use New Balances. Ours were canvas - think PF Flyers. One of my feet got so bloody they eventually allowed me to purchase a decent pair of running shoes at the Exchange. I also noticed them using M-16s for marching/attitude adjustments. We used M-1s which were heavier and longer. Overall, though, brought back many memories.

That's how it generally works with women lol. You can relate if you've ever had an argument with your partner/spouse and before long, neither of you knows why you're yelling anymore. The struggle is real lol. Now picture that, instead of your wife, that woman is one of your DIs that just happens to hate the shape of your face lol. Much, much worse. I speak from experience. Nobody has more to prove than the female Officer/DI. Same applies to law-enforcement as well. I've never been fucked harder by the law than that one time I had to deal with a female Probie with her instructor standing behind her. She certainly had something to prove, and she took it out on my bank account. Sound familiar to any of you ex-married dudes? lol I'm not gonna be sexist and say that *all* females act like that. Just the ones who feel like they have to be harder and meaner than all of their male compatriots to fit in, like every Wookie I ever met lol.

12:49 Holy crap, that death stare... I know Coast Guard gets a lot of flak for not being "actual" military, but it's still impressive to see them go through this. Like those aerial top-down shots of formations. Those were pretty cool.

They are military and they server under both the Dept of Homeland Security and the Dept of Defense, just depends on the mission at the time. Not only are they the real military - they are the oldest version of the military, they existed long before any other branch of the military. They get a lot of shit because people don't know much about them but they are more hardcore than most of the branches. I still say the Marines is above them but they are right up there in 2nd place with the Army/Navy, easily.

The coast guard is military they have the same rank structure E-1,E-8, O-1 etc , Geneva convention military ID , the only difference is that they’re part of the department of homeland security instead of department of defense , it is legally by design that they’re not part of DOD it’s because they’re the only military branch allowed to perform law enforcement but during wartime they’re part of the navy .

It really aggravates me to see people talking shit about the coast guard. Calling them puddle pirates. As a boat owner, I’ve seen the coast guard save countless lives. Risking their own lives in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to save fellow mariners. Believe me, seeing that C-130 fly over or that coastguard cutter pulling up in a time of distress is like seeing the hand of God reaching down and giving you a second chance at life. I’ve been there. So I thank our USCG for EVERYTHING they do 🇺🇸

It’s harmless banter, it’s a military thing. I’d never let a civilian clown on any branch though

@@habitualgl0ckdumper149 oh yeah I have a buddy of mine who is a marine, and he jokingly calls them puddle pirates, but he has the most utmost respect for Coasties, they do shit he would never even think of doing.

My dad well step dad but I call him dad sense he raised me my whole life . Anyway he did the coast guard when i was in kindergarten. Army before he met my mom and the reserves. He still has his coast guard uniform including the hat. We have a wall with a display to honor it. He's retired from military now tho. But I'm proud of him.
