I was a GCI (ground controlled intercept) controller in the 80-85 period. We were taught that Soviet tactics had the fighter pilots under close control by their ground controllers throughout the engagement; whereas, American tactics had the fighter pilots taking over control of the intercept from the ground controller as soon as they had radar contact and flying the whole fight themselves, with the ground controller monitoring on radar and only helping if needed (which makes a whole lot more sense). This of course gave American pilots more freedom to maneuver as they saw fit. So when this pilot says that, after the pass he is switching to flying the way he knows how as an American fighter pilot (because who knows what the Soviets do at that point?) he is implying that he's probably fighting back harder than a Soviet or North Korean fighter pilot and getting as much out of that aircraft as it can give him.
