Several years ago I think it was the same plane at an airshow Lockheed/Burbank airport. I found out they were giving rides for $300 and raced home to ask my 86-year-old mom if she might want to take a ride. She said sure. She was kind of a daredevil. They had to help her up through the Bombay doors because it appears as though you’re on your way to enter and exit the plane. She said she sat on a bench along the wall with just a rope between her and the Bombay doors. They flew over Getty museum and I think over the Pacific ocean a little bit and then return home. She absolutely loved it. But when they took off I thought to myself “ what the heck did I get my poor old mom into”. But like I say she absolutely loved it. She is gone now but this video brought back so many memories. Thanks very much for the video.

Unless you've been through pilot training a person doesn't fully realize the complexity of these "old" aircraft. Just the basic mechanical/operational aspects on a B-24 is intimidating then toss in formation flight, enemy a/c, flak, bombing procedures, and the all present weather threat, and you've suddenly got a lot more respect for the WW2 guys who climbed into these machines. I thought the Cessna 310J was my comfort level for PIC. ::) One of my dad's neighbors was on the first run into Ploesti. Up in the nose he had a ringside seat to everything going on. Just about every B24 he saw go down, he knew at least one person in it and that was before getting to the target. Everything went according to plan except for everything that didn't. Thanks for cockpit view, very nice.

The only problem with the B24 is it lived in the shadow of the B17. The B24 flew faster and carried more payload but just couldn't absorb the battle damage the B17 could and survivability was everything to the crews.

Really nice Bomber is B-24 . I have seen B-24 at palam Air Force museum Delhi. Indians are thankful to Americans that after refurbishing the B-24s they given us broad information about it's functions and how to operate it. Americans helped us at that time . That's why we operated 45 B-24 . Thanks dear American friends.

My father flew 44 missions in a B-24, out of Kunming, China. His last mission was on 26 May 1945. 440 combat hours as a Navigator in the 14th Air Force, 373rd Bomb Squadron (LAB). He went on to a career in R&D, flying many aircraft, including B-52's. I was fortunate enough through the good graces of Fred Lewis, who flew for the Collings Foundation to get a ride in Witchcraft. Keep the history and memories alive!

RW: My Uncle was the pilot of a LAB Snooper in the Pacific. Sadly he went down on take off at 20:45 July 31, 1945. All crew were lost and a war correspondent. Hard to imagine after surviving all that time to go down 6 days before the first Atomic bomb was dropped and the war ended soon after. Grateful to all those that served! God bless those that gave the "Last Full Measure".

Those old Pratt and Whitneys sound wonderful! Like Gen. James Stewart said in “Strategic Air Command”, this great old warrior is “a lot of airplane”. Remember Ploesti and those five Medals of Honor. Gen. George Brown, who flew that mission almost 75 years ago, was my last Chief of Staff in 1973.

To then end of his life he always wondered why they never came in after them This was a plane that definitely did not fly itself.

My late father-in-law piloted B-24 Liberator bombers for the 458th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force, out of Horsham St. Faith in Norfolk, England. He flew about two dozen bombing missions over France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia in 1944-45. He was extremely proud of his service...to the extent that he had an image of a Liberator bomber engraved on his tombstone. Later post-war he occasionally served as official pilot for the then Governor of South Dakota, Joe Foss, who was himself a famous Marine Corp fighter pilot in the darkest days of the Guadalcanal Campaign in the South Pacific. One of my uncles, now deceased, was the flight engineer/top turret gunner on Liberators flying with the 15th Air Force out of Italy. On a bombing mission near Vienna, Austria (in late 1944 I believe) his aircraft was hit by antiaircraft fire over Yugoslavia. (The primary target in Austria was too overcast, so their flight was diverted to a secondary target over Yugoslavia.) He and most of the crew successfully parachuted to safety and were kept as POWs in southern German until liberated by General George Patton's Third Army in the spring of 1945. Bomber crew POWs were treated very harshly by local residents, so he was grateful that his German military guard captors protected him from most abuse. He also had quite a scare when the rail yards that his POW train was staging on for the trip to a Stalag in Germany was thoroughly bombed by U.S. Liberators a few days after his capture. Fortunately, the bombs missed his train car.

my father was a B-24 pilot and flew 52 missions with the P-51 long range fighter escorts. by the grace of God he came home. he was pretty much 100% ptsd but nobody understood this mental issue. he spent most of his time as a tool and repairman and the rest of his time drunk as a skunk. he has since passed. God bless him and of that greatest generation that were there for all of us.

Jimmy Stewart went from flying B-17s to B-24s in WWII over Germany. I recall somewhere that pilots greatly preferred the handling of the 17, but the 24 could carry far more. Also have seen a documentary that said a gear-up landing in a 24 was a suicide mission. As soon as the bottom of the fuselage was weakened the front half would fold under the rear half, crushing everything inside. On a low-wing 17 (and most aircraft) the wing took most of the damage.

Wow... that was beautiful I'd take a ride in a B-24 over any other warbird. Alas, AFAIK none flying in Europe anymore. The Liberator has a special place in my heart after reading "De Dag Van De Liberator" (The Day Of The Liberator), an awesome (dutch language) narrative about 42-7650's crash landing in the Netherlands, and the story of her crew. Sure, B-17's are purdy, but none moves melike this short video clip just did. Thanks for uploading this.

Dear Casey Walker, You have no idea what this means to me. I just saw this on youtube and it gave me chills. My father flew in a B-24 Liberator in WW II in the south Pacific on 41 missions. There is his journal on amazon for sale that I had done in memory of him. He kept a well documented diary of his day to day life in the service. The book is called "My Life In The Service: The WW II Diary of Staff Sergeant Jack E. Bates". I still have the original diary he wrote in and all his WW II memorabilia with the original scrap books all intact. I have a huge interest in seeing a B-24 Liberator in person as I've only seen one at my son's basic training graduation in San Antonio Texas which couldn't have made me any prouder in my life. He was in the Air Force and now a radar tech. in Johnstown Pa. (my son ). I'm in my late 50's and would love to see the plane in your video. I am hoping you see this and can respond to me as I feel like I have so much to talk to you about. Please e-mail me at kcbbiker2@hotmail.com. Ken Bates

I rode in this plane yesterday due to the event going on. It was expensive. But damn it was worth it. You get to see parts of Orange County and L.A that not many get to see. I'm definitely going to do it again if it's in my area next year. I have a higher respect to the troops of WW2. They have bigger balls than I will ever have. Also have a higher respect to our military. If you guys have the money to do it. I highly recommend doing it this year or next if they are in your area.

Great vid and a thousand times better without that crap music . I have just been reading about the aircrash in which Polish WW2 leader Wladyslaw Sikorsky was killed. Departing Gibraltar in a B24 Lib transport the aircraft crashed shortly after take-off killing all on board except the pilot , a Czech. The accident report wasn't excepted by all , and controversy has always surrounded the accident. But it does mention that the Libtransport was diffucult to fly and numerous training accidents , in fact there had been two previous crashes with the model at Gibraltar . American pilot Ernest K Gann who flew Libs for the USAAF said it was a pig of an aeroplane and the worst he ever flew, adding that the Bomber resembled none of the bad flying chracteristics of the Transport version.

MUCH better than the version with the dopey background music. (BTW, why don’t you delete that one?) And if you can ever re-do the flight with a photographer standing behind the pilots, instead of wearing a GoPro helmet-cam, it would spare the viewer the sensation of whiplash from watching the scene snap back & forth so much, with every turn & twitch of the copilot’s head. Still - great aircraft; interesting flight.
