I think it's wrong for people to call Francis "needy". She was one of my people; an adult survivor of child abuse. We search for someone who will help us to heal and to give us the love, safety, and support we never had as a child. We are not "needy".

Why do they point out about her upbringing and childhood so much? And addictive behavior? The fuck? It was clearly because of MGM and the studio's doctor prescriptions that started her addiction. Prescribing 'miracle pills' without the knowledge of its negative effects. Her work environment was very stressful and everyone around her in the studio must have pushed her to work harder non-stop! Even if she wanted to stop, when MGM pushes her that much, it's not her fault - she' s more of a victim here.

They point out her childhood because her mother already exploited her and gave her (and her sisters) pills in order to perform. She was already her mother's victim and object before becoming Hollywood's object. How sad...

I blame the MGM studio more than anybody. Feeding her all those pills and using her as their cashcow. Some modern actress said:"Hollywood can chew you and spit you out within a few years." Of course since Judy was a young actress she had no say in Hollywood, especially not at the time.

I wonder if in 1941 (when Judy was 19) indeed medical science (and pharmacists and doctors dispensing) did not know that speed and barbiturates were habit forming. Certainly (for eons) every parent and caretaker knew, from "common sense," that missing just one night of sleep (much less Judy's MGM three nights) would make anyone lose their health and sanity ... much less a growing teenager. And Louis B. Mayer was very smart. But any one knows people (esp. children) need tender loving care.

The studio wanted to keep Judy very thin and she must have been malnourished on chicken broth and cottage cheese. I think it is possible that poor nutrition contributed to the situation. Plus, eating is naturally pleasurable, she was denied this but provided pills that probably made her feel good. Just my opinion.

The Wizard of Oz was *not* a commercial success as Gone With The Wind was released in the same year and, as Mickey Rooney said, people didn't take the movie or Judy's role in it seriously. Having troubles posting my comment here. Sorry for double postints. Anyhoo, FYI this documentary is part of a series looking at the medical biographies of celebrities, therefore it is looking at the psychopharmacological aspects of Judy's life, not a full, comprehensive story. Ironically, all of us and the future generations that will be entertained by her, helped victimize her. Her talent would never have been enjoyed if not for this and in many ways the current Hellywood "entertainment" industry. So what then? No child abuse, no abuse by the studio, no drug addiction, no Dorothy, no Star is born, no any of the 30 plus "pictures" she made in the Hellywood industry it's an interesting and very sad dichotomy, I hope she really is at peace now. RIP Frances. This is still going on in the entertainment industry today too, just not in the same way. The used up stars are dying young, but they never would have been there to entertain us if not for the Hellywood and the Music "entertainment" industry as well. Just being honest. And judging by one of her last and probably most honest recordings for the auto biography she never got to write, "Judy" who was really Frances, would have agreed with this post.

I am a former Catholic too. No church. Do my own thing. anyway, Many used the priesthood as a way to avoid marriage without the judgment of others. Also, men who felt different, or acted differently had difficulty growing up with other kids in grade school, becoming solitary "loner" types. The clergy must have been a way to finally have some sense of belonging for some, and a chance to gain respect and a sense of confidence. But who knows for sure?

What would Judy think of that comment? You think Judy would be insensitive to another addict?.Judy couldn't stop because of the addictive genetic factor, just as Lindsey is out of control. Thinking Judy not responsible is as wrong as Lindsey being completely at fault. There is no "fault" in addiction. This misguided thinking let Judy blame the Studio for every pill she took, and hastening death. Blaming Lindsey for her addiction, assigning fault, refusing help, just as deadly.

As TCM exposed, Robert Stack recalled dating her when, as a teen, she was already breaking down. A doctor urged at least a year off, at which point - based on Stack's remembering his time in the Garland home - Judy's mother said, "What she needs is to be locked in a closet for a few days," and Louis Mayer made it clear that she, Judy, was studio property and would go on working.

Whether he was or not, it might be that only he knew for certain. There are plenty of people who learn late in life that they're gay (from having denied it, or having tried too hard to 'live straight'.). Gay people can go on to have children before realizing, "You know what? I can't do this anymore." Back then, they didn't really have that luxury, and had to be much more discreet.
